Abstract
The A rizona C ross-Categorical T eacher Project, Project ACT, is designed to meet teacher shortage in LD and EBD and to prepare teachers for this new cross-categorical certification. Project ACT will prepare special education teachers who are highly qualified to teach in resource and inclusive settings as well as to educate students with severe LD or EBD in more restrictive settings. To assure the quality of the teachers prepared and to address the changing demands of special education teachers in public schools, the graduates will develop specialized competencies in three areas identified at the national, state, and local levels as important for teacher success:
  • working collaboratively with general educators to meet the needs of students with disabilities in inclusive settings;
  • educating culturally and linguistically diverse students including strategies for teaching students whose first language is other than English; and
  • integrating educational media and technology into curriculum and management.

Teacher shortage ruled out
State has plenty, ASU study shows Pat Kossan
The Arizona Republic
Jan. 26, 2003 12:00 AM Arizona's supply of teachers is slightly above demand, with 1.2 available for every job opening through 2010, according to an Arizona State University study to be released today. "Conventional wisdom has been that there's a dire teacher shortage," said Rob Melnick, director of Morrison Institute for Public Policy. Instead, the study showed demand for the 6,880 new teachers needed each year would fall by almost 1,000 after 2006. The study is about teacher quantity, Melnick said, not quality. A thin job market makes it impossible to select the best teachers.

What's New[s] with National Board Certification
Dateline 12/4/00 Record Numbers of Teachers Earn National Board Certification : The NBPTS announced recently that 4,694 primary and secondary school teachers from 49 states and the District of Columbia have earned the highest professional credential in the field of teaching National Board Certification for the 1999-2000 school year. This record number of NBCTs in a single year nearly doubles last year's group of teachers receiving national certification and brings the overall total of NBCTs to 9,498. Betty Castor, NBPTS President, termed this impressive level of achievement a milestone for her organization and a significant event in the process of educational reform in this country. Castor concluded that this year's certification total reinforced her conviction that the goal of 100,000 NBCTs by the year 2006 is very attainable. "Our vision is that our standards of accomplished teaching become THE standards for excellence in teaching across America," Castor indicated. This vision will soon become a reality, in Castor's judgment. Secretary of Education Richard Riley expressed similar enthusiasm about this year's results. "This accomplishment by a record number of teachers is great news," Riley noted. He concluded that this total offers evidence of "steady progress to insure top quality teaching for our students in every school in the United States."
