Social Studies - Grade 4 Social Studies In Social Studies, the goal is for all students to develop a deep, rich network of understandings related to the world around them. The objectives and competencies included in this curriculum deal with history, geography, economics, and civics from a diverse, global perspective. Students engage in projects that require them to apply Social Studies skills in real-world contexts.
Grade 4 Fourth graders are encouraged to study the rich history and unique attributes of their state. Students should learn about significant events in American history and the role their state played in the development of the United States. Historical documents and democratic principles should be studied to explore American identity. Civic and economic concepts continue to be presented within the context of state history by focusing on state government and economic activity associated with the student's individual state. Geography studies should encompass Earth attributes, processes, and the tools used to understand the world in which we live. Students should develop a cultural perspective through exposure to folklore and diversity.
Geography
Earth Attributes: Hemispheres
The learner will be able to identify earth's hemispheres.

Regional Economic Area Partnership (REAP) Encampment Building, Kansas State Fair Grounds, Hutchinson September 13, 1999
    I. Welcome by Mayor Roberts
Mayor Jeffrey Roberts of Hutchinson opened the meeting at 8:00 a.m., welcomed those in attendance, and recognized Commissioner Robert Courtney, representing Sumner County as a new member of REAP. Roberts took a moment to present a plaque to Mayor Bob Knight of Wichita recognizing him for his important role in the formation of REAP and as the first chairman of REAP. Roberts then proceeded to introduce Mr. Bill Ogg, General Manager, Kansas State Fair.
II. Mr. Bill Ogg, General Manager, Kansas State Fair
Mr. Ogg discussed the future of the Kansas State Fair noting that the Fair is 87 years old and is trying to grow and change with the times. The major plans revolve around a $36 million “face-lift” that will include construction of a multi-purpose building for year-round use, an “ethnic village” focusing on the heritage of Kansas, and new entries and gates to signal a focal point for finding the State Fair entrance and exit. Officials from the State Fair are requesting state funding for the renovations.

    Toltec Mounds State Park
In the modern farmlands of the Arkansas River Valley are the remains of a large group of ancient earthworks known as Toltec Mounds. This impressive archeological site has attracted national interest for over 100 years and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1978. Toltec Mounds State Park is managed cooperatively by the Department of Parks and Tourism and the Arkansas Archeological Survey to preserve and interpret this important and complex archeological site. History Identification of the site with the Toltecs is a mistake. Mrs. Gilbert Knapp, owner from 1857 to 1900, thought the mounds had been built by the Toltecs of Mexico. Investigations by archeologists in 1883 proved that these mounds, like others in North America, had been built by ancestors of the North American Indians. Toltec Mounds is one of the largest and most complex sites in the Lower Mississippi Valley. Located on the bank of Mound Pond, it once had an 8 to 10 foot-high earthen embankment on three sides. A century ago, 16 mounds were known inside the embankment and two of them were 38 and 50 feet high. Today, several mounds and a remnant of the embankment are visible and locations of other mounds are known.
