The Arkansas Language Arts Framework and the Arkansas Mathematics Framework are the first two documents to be completed as part of a planned and continuous revision cycle. The revised frameworks were written by Arkansas teachers, as were the original framework documents. Some changes through revision are noteworthy. For example, the Arkansas Language Arts Framework replaces the two older English Language Arts and Reading Frameworks. Also, the revised Language Arts Frameworks now has three strands, or essential categories, instead of four. Curriculum Framework Math Social Studies Physical Education

$7.8 Million in Special Education General Supervision Enhancement Grants Awarded to 24 States, Territories and Outlying Areas
More than $7.8 million in grants have been awarded by the U.S. Department of Education to 24 states, territories and outlying areas for special education improvement efforts as part of a competitive process to help reform and improve services for children with disabilities. A total of 42 states, Puerto Rico and outlying territories competed for the awards, known as General Supervision Enhancement Grants. The grants are intended to complement and support the accountability system developed by the department’s Office of Special Education Programs by assisting states and lead agencies to develop and improve their infrastructure for holding states, districts and schools accountable for improving student achievement. "Accountability for improved performance rests at the heart of our efforts to improve American education," said U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige. "These awards will help move us toward assuring that our special education programs are offering quality educational services to all students with disabilities so that no child is left behind." Activities supported by the grants include:
  • developing data-driven, evidence-based state monitoring systems that focus on areas that have the greatest impact on better outcomes for children with disabilities;

Adult Education
Arkansas Adult Learning Resource Center GED ESL ... Arkansas Literacy Councils (Partner) Adult education programs provide basic skills classes to adults with less than a high school education. Adult education in Arkansas is based on the following philosophy:
  • All adults can learn.
    All adults have the right to education that enhances their ability to effect positive changes in their lives.
    All adults have right to obtain the life skills that they need to become self- sufficient, actively participating members of society.
    All adults have the right to complete their education through the high school level.
Adult education serves adult learners through adult basic education classes, which are designed for adults functioning up to the 8.9 grade level. General adult education classes prepare adults who score at the 9 to 12 grade level. In fiscal year 2000, a total of 67,306 adults were served. Approximately 7,031 of those served were enrolled in workplace education programs.

    http://www.ag.state.ar.us/outreach/smartchoices/smartchoices.html
    About our office... The "Smart Choices, Better Chances" law education program is designed to help young people understand the criminal laws in Arkansas and the consequences for violating them. The program is founded on the premise that young people must have a better understanding of the criminal justice system in order for laws to have their intended deterrent effect on criminal juvenile behavior. In an effort to educate the young people in Arkansas about these issues, the Arkansas Attorney General's office researched the criminal justice system and worked with educators, attorneys, state legislators, and law enforcement agencies to prepare a law education curriculum. The resulting program is one that not only teaches the law, but also captures a student's attention in order to explain difficult concepts. Because this is a prevention program, the format of the curriculum and the highest level of concentration and time is geared toward the elementary students, but components and outlines are available to meet the needs of the junior & senior high students, educators, parents, and citizens as well. Through the help of volunteers and with the continued support from citizens and agencies throughout the state, it is anticipated that the "Smart Choices" law education program can soon be offered to every student in Arkansas. By providing so many young people with valuable information about laws, crime and consequences, it is hoped that the state of Arkansas will be able to make new strides in reducing the rate of juvenile crime.
