    General information about Franklin County
Early in it's history, Franklin County appears to have been part of the Cherokee Tract. Some people who later said they were born in "Indian Territory" might have actually been born in the Cherokee Tract. In 1828 by treaty the Indian lands in Arkansas were given up for seven million acres west of the current Arkansas boundary. This act of 1828 is the method, on the Federal Bureau of Land Management's patent search site, by which you can find people who 'said' they were living in Lovely County during the time when they were forced to leave.
Franklin County was created Dec 1837 out of Crawford County. The marriage book starts at the end of 1849, the probate court minutes start Jan 1840. The first census of Franklin was in 1840 before that see the 1830 Crawford out of which Franklin was formed.

The French established an outpost in Arkansas as early as 1686, at Arkansas Post in the eastern part of the state. In 1762 they ceded the area to Spain, who returned it in 1800. In 1803, the United States acquired it through the Louisiana Purchase. In 1812 Missouri Territory, which included Arkansas, was carved out of the Purchase and white settlers began moving in to claim their bounty land after the War of 1812. By 1819 Arkansas had become a separate territory and gained statehood in 1836. It seceded from the Union in 1861 and was part of the Confederacy during the Civil War. It was readmitted to the Union in 1868.
