    CALIFORNIA:
[Name given by the first Spanish Explorers]
The third largest and most populous state has great natural diversity ranging from deserts in the southeast to rainforest in the northwest. In between are the towering Sierra Nevada mountains which rise to over 4500 m. Not only is its annual farm output greater than that of any other state, so is its volume of construction and manufacturing.
    NEVADA:
    [Spanish for snow covered
The state's name is taken from the Sierra Nevada, the mountain range shared with California. Mainly desert, Nevada is a region of rugged mountains, desert valleys and sparsely populated plains. The state is largely known for its glittering casinos which draw visitors from around the world. The first European settlers of the state came for its mineral wealth while large ranches were started in the north where rainfall was sufficient for grazing.
    UTAH:
[Name is derived from a Native American word meaning those who dwell high up

Geography 320 US and Canada Site and Situation city assignment This paper is to be about 2 pages + bibliography. Double-spaced, 1" margins, typed. Please have each city on its own page! No more than a page per city should be necessary. We are looking for the reason thei city was founded where it was; what its relationship is/was with the surrounding area (situation); if this has changed since its founding, how and why. I do not need to know the Chamber of Commerce hype.
You are to choose 2 cities from the list at the right and analyze the city's site and situation. You will need to look at a variety of maps(see below) and both zoom in and zoom out to look at the city's physical features (site morphology) and its relative location and hinterlands (situation). I have emphasized location, site and situation in class. You should know what they are by now, but just in case:
Site: This extends the location description to include the ground a town occupies. The physical features of the landscape favor the placement of towns. It also allows for classifying towns according to physical features: rivertowns, gateways, natural resources. Site can also include the street layout, the demographic patterns and city functions or zones.

    Topography and Drainage
Sumner County is in the Wellington Lowland and the Arkansas River Lowlands of the Central Lowland physiographic province (Schoewe, 1949). The upland areas of the county, because of the thick shale beds underlying the surface, are chiefly gently rolling plains. The valleys are wide and flat except locally where sand dunes have formed. The highest points in the county are in the area west of Conway Springs. The lowest points are near Drury and Geuda Springs along Chikaskia and Arkansas Rivers. The total relief in the county is about 400 feet. Sumner County is drained by southeastward-flowing streams. Arkansas River crosses the northeast corner of the county and is joined by Ninnescah River near Oxford. Cowskin Creek enters the county a short distance west of Mulvane and joins Arkansas River between Mulvane and Oxford. Slate Creek has its headwaters northwest of Conway Springs and joins Arkansas River near Geuda Springs. Salt Creek is a small tributary to Arkansas River flowing through Geuda Springs. Chikaskia River enters the county west of Argonia and leaves it south of Drury. Prairie Creek, whose headwaters are north of Mayfield, joins Chikaskia River west of Corbin. Bluff Creek and Fall Creek drain the southwestern part of the county, joining a short distance east of Caldwell.
    Population
According to the 1950 census, the population of Sumner County was 23,646. The average density of population was 20.0 per square mile as compared to 23.2 for the entire state. The population of Sumner County in 1940 was 26,163. Hence, by 1950, it had decreased 9.6 percent. The incorporated cities of Sumner County and their 1950 populations are as follows: Argonia, 562; Belle Plaine, 971; Caldwell, 2,000; Conway Springs, 816; Geuda Springs, 245; Hunnewell, 103; Mayfield, 134; Milan, 165; Mulvane, 1,387; Oxford, 798; South Haven, 358; and Wellington, 7,747. In 1950 the population of the county was 32.8 percent urban, as compared to 27.7 percent in 1940.

Kentucky's Physical Geography Program Adds A Third Scholar
Sean Campbell is a geomorphologist and Earth System Scientist. His research interests are in water/rock/atmosphere interactions and in the geomorphology of the Earth's Arctic and Alpine regions. His key concerns are water chemistry, the water and mineral chemical reactions responsible for this chemistry and the effects that changes in atmospheric chemistry will have upon these fundamental reactions. His current research is aimed at understanding the spatial and temporal variation in these reactions in order to create better models of these systems.
Dr. Campbell received his Bachelors of Science degree in 1998 from Arizona State University with a major in Geography. From there he went to the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville where he received a Master of Arts degree in Geography in 1999 and his Ph.D. in Environmental Dynamics in 2002. He will be returning to the Swedish Arctic in the summer of 2003, and hopes to expand his research into the Arctic regions of Spitsbergen, Finland, Iceland, and Greenland in the near future through his collaboration with Drs. John Dixon of the University of Arkansas, and Colin Thorn and Bob Darmody of the University of Illinois.
