Web Site: www.nationalgeographic.com then click on education The National Geographic Society's mission is to improve geographic literacy which ultimately depends upon the efforts of individual teachers. In each state Geographic Alliances offer a range of services to help teachers learn more about geography, improve their teaching skills, and strengthen their leadership abilities. The Alliances conduct one or more summer institutes for teachers within their state. Participants receive instruction in geography, learn about new teaching methods and materials, and return to their school districts as Teacher-Consultants (TCs), well versed in geography and able to pass along their knowledge to colleagues through effective in-service presentations. Teachers who have graduated from Alliance institutes and who have demonstrated leadership are eligible for the Summer Geography Workshop held each year in Washington DC. This 2-week workshop offers lessons in advanced geography and training in working with the media. During the workshops, teachers develop activities for implementation throughout their states during Geography Awareness Week.
