Results The largest study of McRAT's achievement effects was conducted in Arkansas using program-developed writing assessments, which were scored by independent raters. Essays of McRAT and control students who were instructed using the same curriculum were evaluated for development in the cognitive areas taught through the program. McRAT students showed significant gains in pre- and post-tests and significantly outperformed control students in the areas of analysis, inference, comparison, and evaluation. There have been similar findings from follow-up studies, as well as studies at individual program replication sites, including one in Baltimore, Maryland see "Case Studies"

Arkansas Charter School Information
State Profile Info Last Updated: 03-12-2003
Brief Overview:
Arkansas passed charter legislation in 1995, with revisions in 1999 and 2001. There are currently 4 charter schools in operation with 4 more approved. Arkansas statute allows for the creation of 3 types of charter schools:
1) Conversion charter schools are operated by existing public school districts and are open to any student eligible to attend school in the district;
2) Open-enrollment charter schools may be operated by 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations, governmental entities, and colleges/universities; and
3) Limited charter schools may be created by a public school district for the purpose of implementing alternative comprehensive staffing and compensation programs.

Assessing the Impact of Technology on Teaching and Learning: Student Perspectives In spring 1998, a study was conducted with Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) faculty on their perceptions about technology in the classroom, their usage of various types of technology, the effects of various technologies on good teaching practices, and their projected use of instructional technology in the near future. In the second phase of our research, a study was conducted with MTSU students. The study addressed student perceptions about technology in the classroom, the value of various types of technology in their learning and research experiences, and the effects of the different types of technologies on their relationship with the instructor and other students, the outcome of the course, and their understanding of the course material. Results of both studies will be shared with participants, with the emphasis on the student study.
