The NYTS report provides first-ever national data on the prevalence of current tobacco use among middle school students and documents the emergence of bidis and kreteks among middle and high school students. Approximately 15,000 students in grades 6 through 12 from about 131 public and private schools participated in the NYTS. A previous report focusing on tobacco use prevalence was published in the January 28, 2000 issue of the MMWR.

Dillard Curator Butler Center for Arkansas Studies Central Arkansas Library System Little Rock, Arkansas The purpose of this bibliography is to compile in handy form a listing of publications and other materials which teachers of Arkansas History might find useful. This is not a comprehensive bibliography of everything that ought to be found in a school media center or public library. Rather, it is intended to help the individual teacher pull together the information needed to prepare lesson plans and effectively teach about our state. The teacher can use this list to get started, then build on it as time goes by. Almost every month something new and useful is published in the field. Becoming an informed teacher of Arkansas History is a life-time process, one which involves much readingbut it is a satisfying experience. The bulk of the titles in this list are still in-print and available. However, a number of out-of-print titles are included. These materials can usually be found in college and university libraries as well as the larger public libraries in the state. I would urge you to familiarize yourself with the Arkansas collection in your local libraries. Home West Point Bicentennial Engineering Design Contest Winners Announced On April 27, 2002, seven teams from the more than 19,000 that entered the WPBEDC competed at the United States Military Academy for top honors. Beginning in November 2001, K-12 students from across the nation spent three months creating virtual bridges using a computer-aided design software package called the West Point Bridge Designer. The one-or-two-person team designs were judged on structural adequacy with minimum cost. After several rounds of online semi-finals, the seven finalist teams traveled to West Point for a grueling, three-hour design challenge. The results: First place, each team member receiving a $15,000 cash scholarship: Arkansas School for Math and Science, Hot springs, Arkansas. SEDLETTER May 2000 articles: Study Circles Stave Off Crises for Two Arkansas School Districts By John Pennington Both districts participated in the Calling the Roll: Study Circles for Better Schools project, hoping to open the lines of communication between their schools and the public. In Arkansas, the project was sponsored by the Arkansas Friends for Better Schools, the Southwest Educational Development Laboratory, and the Study Circles Resource Center (SCRC). Calling the Roll brought multiple, diverse groups of 8-12 people together to thoughtfully discuss how well public education is working in their communities. Participants agreed to attend four two-hour meetings held in schools, churches and community centers. North Little Rock Faces Teacher Strike "We didn’t have much to lose by becoming involved in Calling the Roll," admits Little Rock school board member Teresa Burl. "We wanted anything that could improve our communication, anything that could make people aware of what’s going on in schools and give us some input. Action Plan Fall 2001 – Summer 2004 In order for the Conway School District to realize its vision and accomplish its mission, the following events will occur. The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards for students will be the student technology standards for the Conway School District. The ISTE Technology Standards for All Teachers and the Technology Standards for School Administrators will be adopted as the standards for the Conway School District. All new staff will bring to the district preservice technology training and will possess skills necessary to provide appropriate learning experiences for their students. All staff will be afforded ample in-service opportunities to acquire knowledge and skills outlined in the ISTE standards for teachers and administrators.
