Reciprocal Certification
All of the programs in teacher education at UMCP are fully accredited and lead to teacher certification in the State of Maryland , which is reciprocal in most other states. A listing of the states with which we have reciprocity is provided below: NOTE: The listing in the table below is taken from the NASDTEC website, http://www.nasdtec.org/report.tpl Alabama Alaska Arizona Arkansas California Colorado Connecticut Delaware Florida Georgia Hawaii Idaho Illinois Indiana Kansas Kentucky Louisiana Maine Massachusetts Michigan Mississippi Montana Nebraska Nevada New Hampshire New Jersey New Mexico New York North Carolina North Dakota Ohio Oklahoma Oregon Pennsylvania Rhode Island South Carolina Tennessee Texas Utah Vermont Virginia Washington West Virginia Wyoming Dictrict of Columbia NOTE: Several of these states require prospective teachers to meet additional ancillary requirements (e.g., additional teacher candidate assessments and/or courses, higher GPA requirement, etc.) in order to be fully certified. In many cases, the incoming teachers are issued an initial certificate, which enables them to begin teaching, and they are given a specific time line for fulfilling any remaining teacher certification requirements. For further information about a particular state, contact that state's Office of Teacher Certification. (This state listing is subject to change without notice.)

Alternative Certification Many states have developed or are initiating programs that provide alternative routes to teacher certification, particularly for mid-career professionals. The goal of such programs is to draw a diversity of individuals with in-depth subject matter backgrounds into teaching careers. Requirements for an alternative teaching license vary by state. For an overseas position, it does not matter what state your license is from. Generally, applicants must hold a bachelors degree in the subject to be taught, achieve a passing score on state-required examinations, complete an intensive teacher preparation program, and possibly fulfill a supervised teaching internship. Specific information on which school systems are offering internships can be requested from the schools. After satisfactory completion of these requirements, the applicant will be issued a teaching credential.

Back to Home ... Living Thursday, Apr 03, 2003 Education Posted on Mon, Oct. 07, 2002 Teacher certification pushed National board has approved thousands of applicants, but few in Pa. or N.J. take part. By Melanie Burney Inquirer Staff Writer WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP French teacher Catherine Russo is a novelty in her Gloucester County district. She is the only Washington Township educator to achieve national board certification and one of just 46 in New Jersey. In Pennsylvania, 47 teachers hold the honor. Russo, who teaches seventh and eighth graders at Chestnut Ridge Middle School, was certified in 1997 by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. "It's probably the most productive form of professional development I've ever done," said Russo, a teacher for 12 years. While national certification has been embraced by educators across the country, it has been slow to catch on in New Jersey. Nationwide, more than 16,000 teachers have received the certification. A new group will be named next month from among 20,000 candidates.

    DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
The Department of Education prepares students for careers in elementary and secondary education through programs approved by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the Arkansas Department of Education. Students can major in elementary education and receive certification as an elementary school teacher, or receive certification at the secondary level by combining a major in an academic field with a series of courses in education. At Hendrix, the development of a knowledgeable, caring, and effective teacher is enhanced by the personal attention each student receives as well as the closeness that occurs among the students who participate in the program. Students attend state meetings of the Arkansas Education Association and other professional associations such as the National Science Teachers Association and International Reading Association. Students participate in the Program for Effective Teaching, multicultural workshops, special education workshops, computer technology workshops, discipline conferences, and the classroom management program. The teacher-certification programs provide a strong liberal arts education and give students in-depth experience and full certification. NOTE: In compliance with the Title II public disclosure requirements in sections 207(f)(1) and 207(f)(2) of the Higher Education Act of 1998, the Institutional Report Card for academic year 1999-2000 is available, upon request, from the Hendrix College Education Department. The Hendrix College teacher education program completers for academic year 1999-2000 successfully completed all appropriate components of the Praxis II examinations.
