Armenia - Culture Armenian Culture has earned its place in the history of the world by virtue of the fact that it is one of the oldest, continuous civilizations today. Throughout the centuries, Armenians have created a unique and remarkable culture at the intersection of east and west. Even though countless invaders attempted to destroy it, archaeological research testifies to its existence alongside that of the Babylonians and the Assyrians from at least the III Millennium BC, proven by excavations at Erebuni, Teyshebaini and Medzamor.
In 301AD, Armenians were the first nation to officially adopt Christianity as their national state religion, and this influenced many developments in Armenian culture, and specifically architecture. Replacing pagan temples with the first churches, Christian influences created architectural masterpieces such as the churches of Hripsime, Gayane and the gem of 7th Century Armenian architecture, Zvartnots. Armenian Language Armenian is a complex and beautiful language. Except for a transition into middle Armenian during the 10th-12th centuries and into a modern form in the 19th century, it has been continuously used for more than 1500 years as it was first created, borrowing traces of words and expressions from Hindu, Persian, Arabic, Greek and Latin along the way. In its current form in the Republic, it uses a lively and vibrant incorporation of words from Russian, French, English and other countries. It is a language alive.

culture language literature arts ... art gallery Armenia's culture is unique in many ways. First, it is so much bigger than the nation itself that it overwhelms and dominates all other features of the Armenian ethnic identity.
Second, it is very diversified. During its more than 2,000 year-old history, Armenia has gone through so many radical changes in its size and political status, that our culture has been influenced by and has influenced many other cultures.
The many wars and other disasters in ancient and recent time tore the country apart and left a deep imprint in its culture. That tragic division had some positive consequences too, for instance, post-mediaeval Armenian literature has two different traditions, Western Armenian and Eastern Armenian, which being a part of a original literary heritage, have their own distinct linguistic and stylistic properties.
Other important characteristics of Armenian culture are its permanence and longevity. Throughout its history, Armenia resisted invasion and absorption, relaying through its art one of the most beautiful manifestations of its identity.

Posted by sapnah@us.aiesec.org , 3/1/01 at 11:41:09 AM. CULTURE: You can gain further insights into Armenian cultural achievements at museums, theaters and concert halls. Theater in Armenia has a tradition dating back more than 2,000 years. You can attend a wide choice of performances ranging from concerts to puppet theater and jazz music. At Yerevan you will find the Matenadaran - the Institute of Ancient Manuscripts (see picture). Matenadaran boasts the world's largest collection of ancient manuscripts (over 16,000). ATTRACTIONS CUISINE Since the fall of communism, Armenia has seen a huge number of restaurants spring up, many of them reasonably priced, and good. Pizza, Arabic food, shish kebab (also called khorovadz) and a sprinkling of other ethnic foods are easy to find in Yerevan. There are no western fast food franchises with the exception of two Yum Yum Donuts. Service is often slow and the check must be requested, it will never be brought automatically, no matter how long you sit. Outside of Yerevan, it may be hard to get real meals on the road. You may spot some kebab joints on major highways, but unless someone knows otherwise, assume there is nothing and pack some food. Vegetarianism is virtually unheard of in Armenia and not well understood, but many suitable dishes are available. Drinking vodka may seem to be the national pastime if you spend some time with the locals. Many of them have built up a remarkable tolerance, and others may actually be drinking much less than it would outwardly appear if you watch closely. A large part of drinking is toasting, which at dinners is led by the tamada (toastmaster). Aside from vodka, the local beer and cognac are excellent and cheap. There are many homemade alcohols and liqueurs as well, most of which are delicious. Mixed drinks and other alcohols tend to be hard to find and expensive.

Raffi Kojian has been living in Armenia for over a year and a half. He says, "It is a really
great place for any expat who is not scared off by winters similar to Boston, although
areas of a lower elevation do not get so cold. The cost of living is incredibly low, and the
world class philharmonic, dance groups, and other cultural events are virtually free. The
people are super nice; the real estate laws are quite accommodating and prices quite
remarkable. It is very crime free and a very interesting region for short and cheap trips to
other parts of the region. You get the picture. I think it is an especially good option for
people interested in urban retirement, for super cheap." Additional Resources

    Introduction Classification Preface ... ThankYou
Classification The Armenian Enlightenment Chronicle was born in the face and need of a serious and extensive work on Armenia's Great History and Glorious past, which prior to the issuance of the Chronicle Mega Site was not being properly and completely covered on the Internet, particularly by the Armenian sites in Armenia and as well as the Diaspora. Some of these pages contained outdated passages and did not contain the latest data and research on topics such as for instance "The Indo-European Homeland" a chapter which focuses its attention on the new evidence that has recently emerged and old outmoded theories have been changed and revised to a great extent. Some pages do not exactly coincide, or have flaws and mistakes in time periods and historical characters that were greatly in need of modifications and updates. The Armenian Enlightenment Chronicle represents the rich and glorious history and culture of the ancient Armenian Civilization in all of its aspects, from our roots of Ararat-Indo-European homeland to our modern, present day third Republic of Armenia. In this respect the "Armenian Enlightenment Chronicle" expects to thoroughly and successfully feel the "gap" in informing the reader of the 6,000 years of greatness and glory, triumph and vigor, vivacious tenacity and a resolute struggle of endurance to keep our Sacred Faith, our Sacred Homeland, our Civilization and our National identity in a face of every imaginable and unimaginable sacrifice.

    http://www.roadtoarmenia.com/aghpyur/aghpyur.html
Aghpyur Children’s Journal , published in Yerevan, Armenia, has long played a key part in the lives of Armenia’s children. The colorful publication has been a close friend of students, offering advice, encouraging creative use of their minds, and helping inspire a love for their homeland. Its pages feature stories, poetry, drawings, and commentary contributed by children of all ages, as well as writing by professional writers who write for children. The editor-in-chief is Tadevos Tonoyan, a poet and lecturer with a doctorate in Armenian literature.
“My purpose is to get the journal printed, and to educate and advance the children of Armenia,” Tonoyan says. “We want to have Armenian culture and the culture of the world presented to children here. For this reason, much work is translated for Aghpyur . Times are difficult, but there are still many talented children who deserve to have their work presented to others, so they don’t lose hope. They need to know they are not alone, and that others are with them in these difficult times.
Aghpyur is currently funded by the Armenian government. Due to ongoing constraints, the journal is often short of money to print. Tonoyan has long stressed the importance of setting up a separate fund dedicated to ensuring timely publication of the monthly magazine. Citing
