BASIC INFO. GEOGRAPHY GOVERNMENT ... PEOPLE Color ARMENIA About half of Armenia's area of approximately 29,800 square kilometers has an elevation of at least 2,000 meters, and only 3 percent of the country lies below 650 meters. The lowest points are in the valleys of the Aras River and the Debet River in the far north, which have elevations of 380 and 430 meters, respectively. Elevations in the Lesser Caucasus vary between 2,640 and 3,280 meters. To the southwest of the range is the Armenian Plateau, which slopes southwestward toward the Aras River on the Turkish border. The plateau is masked by intermediate mountain ranges and extinct volcanoes. The largest of these, Mount Aragats, 4,430 meters high, is also the highest point in Armenia. Most of the population lives in the western and northwestern parts of the country, where the two major cities, Erevan and Gyumri (which was called Aleksandropol' during the tsarist period), are located.
The valleys of the Debet and Akstafa rivers form the chief routes into Armenia from the north as they pass through the mountains. Lake Sevan, 72.5 kilometers across at its widest point and 376 kilometers long, is by far the largest lake. It lies 2,070 meters above sea level on the plateau. Terrain is most rugged in the extreme southeast, which is drained by the Bargushat River, and most moderate in the Aras River valley to the extreme southwest. Most of Armenia is drained by the Aras or its tributary, the Razdan, which flows from Lake Sevan. The Aras forms most of Armenia's border with Turkey and Iran as well as the border between Azerbaijan's adjacent Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic and Iran.

Introduction [Top of Page] Current issues: Armenia's leaders remain preoccupied by Armenia's 10-year conflict with Azerbaijan over the Nagorno-Karabakh enclave. Although a cease-fire has been in effect since May 1994, the sides have not made substantial progress toward a peaceful resolution. In January 1998, differences between President TER-PETROSSIAN and members of his cabinet over the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process came to a head. With the prime minister and defense and security ministers arrayed against him, an isolated TER-PETROSSIAN resigned the presidency on 3 February 1998. Robert KOCHARIAN, TER-PETROSSIAN's prime minister, was elected president in March 1998. Concerns about Armenia's economic performance rose in 1997 with a slowdown in growth and an increase in inflation. geography administrative division maps capital The Republic of Armenia lies in a triangular section of the Transcaucasus, bordered by Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkey and the Republic of Georgia. With an area of 29,800 square kilometers (11,490 square miles), the landlocked country is just about the size of Vancouver Island. The capital city, Yerevan, lies on the Hrazdan River, and is home to some 1.2 million people. The next three largest cities are Gyumri (pop. 121,000), Vanadzor (pop. 74,000) and Abovian (pop. 54,000). Another important city is Echmiadzin, located some 20 miles west of Yerevan, which is the seat of the patriarchate of the Armenian Apostolic Church. The greatest part of Armenia is mountainous (about 300 feet above sea level), while one-third is pastureland. Forest and woodland cover 12 percent of the contry, arid land some 18 percent, and permanent crops cover 3 percent. The highest elevation is 4,095 meters (Mt. Aragats) and the lowest point is 400 meters above the sea level (Debed river). There are more than 200 streams and rivers in Armenia, none navigable, however, because of their steep descents and rapid currents. The Armenian countryside also boasts some 100 small, but picturesque lakes. One of the largest mountain lakes in the world, Lake Sevan, covers an area of 1,400 square kilometers and is about 650 feet above sea level.

Republic of Armenia By Hye Etch Introduction rmenia, a cradle of civilization. A land of unspoiled natural beauty, with its snow-peaked mountains, lush green valleys, life giving rivers and lakes. A land which has been constantly invaded by ancient civilizations, a battlefield for rivaling great empires, but also a land of prosperity and commerce. The home land of all Armenians. A nation whose ancestral history dates back 2000 years B.C. A nation whose culture and arts influenced and intrigued other civilizations. Whose fine sculpture and world famous church architecture adorn the hills and plains of this great land. In short, Armenia is literally an “ Open Air Museum ” set in one of the most beautiful and unspoiled regions of this big planet of ours, Earth. This chapter is dedicated to the current day Republic of Armenia. It’s an introduction to her history, political structure, economy and industry. The reader will learn about the significance and meaning of the Tricoloured flag and the coat-of-arms of Armenia. You will get acquainted with some of the famous tourist sites, her museum, churches and art galleries. A special section about Nagorno Karabagh has been included, as an introduction to this mountainous Armenian Republic situated East of Armenia within the boarders of neighboring Azerbaijan.

    Geography
Armenia covers 11,500 square miles in the southern Caucasus, which is an area slightly larger than the state of Maryland. This landlocked republic is bordered by Georgia to the North, Turkey to the West, and Iran to the South. A narrow strip of Armenian land to the East and the Southwest separates the Nakhichevan territory of Azerbaijan from Azerbaijan proper. Much of Armenia is a rugged plateau of ridges, narrow valleys, extinct volcanoes, and small rivers and streams. The climate is varies: mild and cool in the highlands and hot in the semi-arid lowlands. Lake Sevan, the largest lake in Armenia, is surrounded by extinct volcanoes. Known as Armenia's Pearl, this lake serves as the main reservoir of Armenia's irrigation system. Armenia's main rives include the Araks River, which flows into the Caspian Sea, and the Hrazdan, which flows from Lake Sevan into the Araks River in a series of majestic waterfalls. The Araks and Hrazdan Rivers provide almost all of Armenia's electric power. The Ararat plain is now the most densely populated area in Armenia, and, with irrigation, supports crops such as cotton, fruit trees, and the vineyards from which Armenia's famous cognacs are made. Armenia was once covered by many forests. During the industrialization drive of the Soviet er, most of these forests were cut down. Although reforestation has alleviated this ecological problem to some extent, the last few years have been disastrous. Due to the continuing blockade of energy supplies to Armenia from neighboring Azerbaijan, almost all the trees have been cut down to provide desperately needed fuel for heating and cooking.

    Facts about Armenia
    Rebublic of Armenia
Republic of Armenia is a mountainous region, occupying the Armenian upland and adjoining parts of the Lesser Caucasus; 90% of the area is at elevation of 1.000m(3,300ft) or more. The climate is dry and continental, with warm summers and cold winters. The only major lowland suitable for agriculture is the Ararat plain at the foot of Mount Ararat, which is across the border in Turkey. The most prominent physical feature of Armenia is Lake Sevan, one of the world's largest mountain lakes, which covers 5% of the area of the republic. The Hrazdan River flowing out of the lake is used for both power generation and irrigation. The lake level has been dropping because of excessive outflow of water, and a 48-km(30mi) diversion tunnel has been built(completed 1979) from the nearby Arpa River to supply additional water inflow. Armeni is a producer of copper and molybdenum, which are mined in the Kadzharan area, and of gold, which is mined in the Zod area, near the east end of Lake Sevan. The chemical industry is concentrated in Yerevan mostly. A nuclear power station, opened in 1976, contributes much of the electricity. The agriculture specializes in vineyards, fruits, tobacco, and essential oils.
    Geography
Armenia is a vast area lying between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea and circumscribing the lakes of Sevan in the north, Van in the west and Urmia in the south: the area now politically divided up among Russia, Iran, Turkey and, in part, Syria.

The country is bordered by Georgia and Azerbaijan to the north and east, Iran and Nakhichevan to the south, and Turkey to the west. The highest point in Armenia is Mt. Aragats (13,418 feet), the largest body of water is Lake Sevan and the largest river is Araks. At its greatest extent 2,000 years ago, the area occupied by the Armenian people was over 100,000 square miles. Today, Armenian territory covers only about 11,506 square miles, just slightly larger than the state of Maryland. Although the country's total land area once equaled that of England and Wales put together, Armenia has never supported a population of more than 5-6 million. Mt. Ararat is situated in Turkey. However, Armenians once inhabited and ruled Mt. Ararat, where the Biblical Noah's Ark first landed escaping the Great Flood. It is 16,945 feet high. The permanent snow line begins at the level of 14,000 feet. Mt. Ararat consists of volcanic rocks. Armenia's largest body of water is one of the highest lakes in the world. Lake Sevan unveils itself with constantly changing colors - contrasting itself to the sky. Sevan is a lake of mysteries, located at an altitude of 6,340 feet above sea level. Its waters are sweet. Twenty eight short mountain streams merge into Sevan, But only one - Hrazdan River - flows out.
