Armenians are an ancient people who trace their roots back to the early part of the first millennium BC. For long periods, Armenia was an independent nation, located primarily in the eastern regions of present-day Turkey. The greatest Armenian king, Tigran II, who ruled from 95 to 55 BC, governed a realm that extended from the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. But Tigran was overwhelmed by the Romans and, in the ensuing centuries, Armenia became a coveted territory for the Persians, the Byzantines, the Seljuk Turks, the Mongols and, more recently, the Ottomans.
Present-day Armenia comprises only 10 percent of the nation's historic territory. In 1915, a large segment of the Armenian population was destroyed during World War I in what has become known as the first genocide of the 20th century. Armenia enjoyed brief self-rule from 1918 to 1920. But in 1920, an agreement hammered out by the Turks under Kemal Ataturk and V.I. Lenin in Moscow resulted in the cession of the fledgling republic to the Bolsheviks. The current Republic of Armenia declared independence from the Soviet Union on September 21, 1991.
About 3 million Armenians live in Armenia and some 1.5 million more reside in other parts of the former Soviet Union. Another 4 million are scattered around the world, with the largest communities in the United States, Canada, France, Iran, Argentina, Lebanon, Turkey, Syria and Australia. Armenians are successful in business and professional life. They are renowned as scientists, doctors and educators, and excel in the arts and literature.

History
Poor little Armenia has been the mouflon in the sandwich between warring nations and factions for millennia, and its people have been used as spear fodder time and time again. They've been shipped or fled back and forth across burning deserts with the vicissitudes of shifting borders or the whims of empire builders in far flung capitals. National borders - historic and present - tend to waver depending on who you're talking to, but what is certain is that the isthmus between the Black and the Caspian seas has long been a who-what-where pressure cooker of ethnic migrations, competing religions, jostling international egos, envy, ethnic hatred, warring armies, grand victories and devastating losses. The first empires and kingdoms that encompassed parts or all of present day Armenia were the Urartu (originally under King Argistis, who built a fort at present day Yerevan), the Persian Achaemenian, Alexander the Great's Macedonian Empire, the Seleucid, the Roman and the Byzantine. The Persians threw a punch around 428 AD, and when they tried to impose the Zoroastrian religion in 451 they sparked a revolt that eventually won Armenians a degree of political and religious freedom. Muslim Arabs ventured north in the 7th Century AD, and local big shot Ashot Bagratuni the Carnivorous (no prizes for his favourite food) came to power and launched a period of prestige for his line. But in the 11th century the Byzantines expanded into the region again, and scarcely had the dust settled than the Turks marched in. Before the end of the 12th century came Egyptian Mamluks and European crusaders (who didn't rule but managed to bring in a few western style reforms and leave some French words). The Persians and the Ottoman Turks were the next to come to blows in the region, and the Ottomans managed to cling on to most of Armenia for the better part of 400 years.

Armenia in general is a harsh, cold and mountainous land. Russia, the Ukraine and Georgia are to the North, Azerbajian on the East, Iran, Syria and Iraq on the South and Turkey on the West. Armenia has been occupied and divided by Russia, Greece, Turkey and Persia and thus has a cuisine which is complicated by name and ingredients. The fact that Armenia was the first Christian nation on earth and completely surrounded by Moslems and nomadic tribes affected the diet of it's people not only as related to farming methods but also as to religious belief. An agrarian civilization spanning 2600 years, Armenia was the crossroads of the world between East and West, "The silk road". It's food reflects that fact by similarities in recipes from Europe to India. The meat staple of the country was lamb and to a lesser extent chicken and beef. No pork was used in the Armenian diet due to biblical belief that only animals that chewed their cud were to be eaten. Seafood was mainly lake or river fish and sturgeon and it's caviar. No salt water ports border modern Armenia. Vegetables such as squash, onions, tomatoes, garlic, cabbage, okra, green beans, peppers, cucumbers and eggplant were used quite extensively during the summer growing season. Armenians love vegetables and were very adept at roasting them. Eggplant, peppers, squash, garlic and onions were among their favorites. During the cold winter months the staples were dried fruits, dry preserved olives, nuts, beans, rice and wheat. Meat was preserved like a confit. Lamb was cooked in it's own fat and preserved without refrigeration beneath a thick layer of solidified fat. Called kavourma, the homemaker would reach into a crock of preserved lamb and remove a portion enough for a meal. The meat was so well cooked that it fell off the bone. The fat surface layer was replaced until another portion was needed.

Taekwondo was introduced in Armenia by Rashid Al Araby (see on the left in pic1), Varujan Arshakyan (see on the right in pic1) and Mishael Shahnazaryan (see on the middle in pic1). In 1989 Rashid Al Araby who was a student of Yerevan’s Polytechnic Institute from Morocco established his first groups of taekwondo. In 1989 Varujan Arshakyan who was a wushu instructor has gone to learn taekwondo in Russia where taekwondo was doing his first steps. The teacher of V. Arshakyan became Kum Hong Lee (9th dan, now the Secretary General of WTF). Passing the examination at the head of master Lee Varujan took black belt 1st dan. Returning in Armenia in 1990 V. Arshakyan and M. Shahnazaryan opened their first taekwondo groups. In 1991 they founded the first Taekwondo Federation of Armenia. In 1992 took place the first Championships of Armenia. In the same year (1992) the new - born Armenian Federation already have got his first prizewinners in the international competitions: Arman Ananyan and Armen Arakelyan have became bronze prizewinners of the first Championship of USSR. In 1993 the president of the federation became Gagik Nersisyan (deputy of the Armenian Parliament).

Armenia Time and Date Armenia History Back to Top The modern republic of Armenia covers only the northeastern portion of an area historically inhabited by Armenians, whose ancestors settled in the area of Mount Ararat, in present-day Turkey, in the late 3000s bc. In the early 1st century bc Armenian king Tigranes the Great formed an empire—the most extensive Armenian realm in history—that stretched from the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean Sea and included parts of Georgia and Syria. Tigranes’ empire came under the control of the Roman Empire before the end of the 1st century, however, and Armenia became a buffer zone—and often a battleground—in Rome’s campaigns against the Parthians, who ruled over Persia.

The traditional folk arts, especially singing, dancing, and artistic crafts, are popular. The 20th-century Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian achieved worldwide renown. The public libraries include the A.F. Myasnikyan State Public Library and the Matenadaran archives in Yerevan, which contain 10,000 Armenian manuscripts, the largest collection in the world. There are also a number of museums, including the State Historical Museum of Armenia. Armenian science, like its culture, has its roots in antiquity, but research institutions are a 20th-century development. The Armenian Academy of Sciences is composed of a number of institutes engaged in research problems in natural and social sciences. The radio broadcasting system has been operating since 1926, and the Yerevan television centre since 1956. Broadcasts and telecasts are conducted in Armenian, Russian, Azerbaijani, and Kurdish. Many newspapers and periodicals are published in Armenia, most of them in the Armenian language.

    History and Government
    History:
The incorporation of Armenia into the Turkish Seljuk Empire in the 11th century resulted in the first of many waves of emigration and the beginning of the Armenian diaspora. Turkish rule was not fully consolidated, however, and over the next three centuries, Armenia sought to re-establish its identity. Local potentates forged a variety of alliances according to the strategic imperative of the time: with fellow Christians, namely the crusaders; or with the Mongols to ward off the threat of the Egyptian Mamluks in the 13th century.
The Mamluk advance into the region brought an end to this period of comparative independence: subsequent Armenian history is almost exclusively that of foreign domination. The Mamluks were supplanted by the Ottoman Turks, after which Armenia became the subject of a constant struggle between them and the Iranian Safavid dynasty until the 18th century. At the beginning of the 19th century the Russians moved in, and took control of the area that is now the modern state of Armenia. Russian rule was at best heavy handed, particularly under Tsar Nicholas II who closed Armenian schools and libraries and confiscated the assets of the Armenian church.

    http://www.ahmp.org/wpcglast.html
THE WASHINGTON POST Sunday, March 11, 2001; Page B01 Armenia's History, Turkey's Dilemma By Paul Glastris It is dimly lit and dank as a cavern inside the old National Bank building two blocks from the White House. The electricity is off, and we make our way around with the aid of a flashlight. Its narrow beam reveals an impressive three-story atrium with a carved wood ceiling, dated-looking ATM machines and an old bank vault, its yard-thick steel door yawning open. I'm exploring this vintage space with Ross Vartian of the Armenian National Institute (ANI), a branch of the increasingly powerful Armenian Assembly of America, an ethnic lobbying group. The ANI bought the building last year for $7.25 million, with the aim of transforming it from a place that safeguarded money to one that will preserve a memory. Four years from now, Vartian tells me, this space will be a $50 million museum and memorial filled with mural-size photos, personal artifacts and interactive exhibits chronicling the history of an atrocity that time and politics have long obscured: the Armenian genocide of 1915 to 1923. Visitors will learn how, in those eight years, 1.5 million Armenians living in the eastern Anatolia region of present-day Turkey were massacred or perished in forced death marches ordered by the nationalist Turkish regime of the declining Ottoman Empire. Vartian says he wants the museum to be as emotionally powerful and historically accurate as Washington's hugely popular U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. That means being honest about not only the Turks who slaughtered Armenians, but also those who tried to save them. "Just about every Armenian who survived, including a member of my own family, was saved by a righteous Turk," says Vartian. But whether it honors righteous Turks or not, the museum will not be seen as historically accurate by the Republic of Turkey.
