Basic Facts Political History Religious History Early Settlements. "People first settled what is now Armenia in about 6000 B.C. The first major state in the region was the kingdom of Urartu (uh-RAHR-too), which appeared around Lake Van in the thirteenth century B.C. and reached its peak in the ninth century B.C. Shortly after the fall of Urartu to the Assyrians, the Indo-European-speaking proto-Armenians migrated, probably from the west, onto the Armenian Plateau and mingled with the local people of the Hurrian civilization, which at that time extended into Anatolia (ah-nah-TOH-lee-ah) from its center in Mesopotamia. Greek historians first mentioned the Armenians in the mid-sixth century B.C. Ruled for many centuries by the Persians, Armenia became a buffer state between the Greeks and Romans to the west and the Persians and Arabs of the Middle East. It reached its greatest size and influence under King Tigran II , also known as Tigranes (ti-GRAY-neez) or Tigran the Great (r. 95-55 B.C.). During his reign, Armenia stretched from the Mediterranean Sea northeast to the Mtkvari River (called the Kura [kuh-RAH] in Azerbaijan) in present-day Georgia. Tigran and his son

Armenian tradition has preserved several legends concerning the origin of the Armenian nation. The most important of these tells of Hayk (Hayg or Haig), the eponymous hero of the Armenians who called them-selves Hay (Hye) and their country Hayk' or Hayastan. The historian of the 5th century, Movses Khorenatsi, also relates at some length the valiant deeds of Aram whose fame extended far beyond the limits of his country. Consequently, the neighboring nations called the people Armens or Armenians. Archeology has extended the prehistory of Armenia to the Acheulian age (500,000 years ago), when hunting and gathering peoples crossed the lands in pursuit of migrating herds. The first period of prosperity was enjoyed by inhabitants of the Armenian upland in the third millennium B.C. These people were among the first to forge bronze, invent the wheel, and cultivate grapes. The first written records to mention the inhabitants of Armenia come from hieroglyphs of the Hittite Kingdom, inscribed from 1388 to 1347 B.C., in Asia Minor. The earliest inscription to be found directly upon Armenian lands, carved in 1114 B.C. by the Assyrians, describes a coalition of kings of the central Armenian region referring to them as "the people of Nairi."

      BACKGROUND
Established in April, 1996 UNESCO Chair of Armenian Art History (UNESCO CAAH) at Yerevan State University (YSU) in Yerevan, Republic of Armenia is responsible for newly organised Art History Department, and intends to advance high education in the field of art history in Armenia and through distance education worldwide.
UNESCO CAAH is a research and educational center. It's academic projects correspond to main projects of UNESCO such as Silk Road Project and Culture and Art of the Mediterranean area . The academic staff of UNESCO CAAH will focus its attention on exploration of the interrelations of Armenian Art with the arts of neighboring countries and peoples.
CAAH is supported by UNESCO and YSU and also by the Armenian Community in USA. Recently UNESCO CAAH received from V. Der Manuelian (from Boston) the donation for establishment of Arshag Fetvajian Art Library. UNESCO CAAH had been supported also by GETTY ART HISTORY INFORMATION PROGRAM which donated art software and literature.
The fragmented educational system of YSU is in the process of fundamental change, and although this process has received rare governmental support, the major initiatives and solutions must be advanced through private endeavors and resources if substantial progress is to take place.

History: A tragic sense of lost territory and national persecution, pride in a long, unbroken history of religion and learning, and a tradition of emigration and deportation combine - in a similar manner to the Jewish people with whom they are often compared - to give the Armenian people a strong sense of national identity. Before it was incorporated into the Roman Empire in AD 114, the Armenian Empire stretched from the Caspian Sea in the east to the Mediterranean in the west. In AD 301, Armenia became the first country to adopt Christianity as its state religion, and by the fifth century the church had developed an alphabet which is still used today.
The incorporation of Armenia into the Turkish Seljuk Empire in the 11th century resulted in the first of many waves of emigration and the beginning of the Armenian diaspora. Turkish rule was not fully consolidated, however, and over the next three centuries, Armenia sought to re-establish its identity. Local potentates forged a variety of alliances according to the strategic imperative of the time: with fellow Christians, namely the crusaders; or with the Mongols to ward off the threat of the Egyptian Mamluks in the 13th century.
The Mamluk advance into the region brought an end to this period of comparative independence: subsequent Armenian history is almost exclusively that of foreign domination. The Mamluks were supplanted by the Ottoman Turks, after which Armenia became the subject of a constant struggle between them and the Iranian Safavid dynasty until the 18th century. At the beginning of the 19th century the Russians moved in, and took control of the area that is now the modern state of Armenia. Russian rule was at best heavy handed, particularly under Tsar Nicholas II who closed Armenian schools and libraries and confiscated the assets of the Armenian church.

Summary of Events Leading up to the Genocide
Somewhat surprisingly to many, Armenians and Turks lived in relative harmony in the Ottoman empire for centuries. Armenians were known as the "loyal millet". During these times, although Armenians were not equal and had to put up with certain special hardships, they were pretty well accepted and there was relatively little violent conflict. Things began to change for a number of reasons. Nationalism, a new force in the world reared its head and made ethnic groupings self-conscious, and the Ottoman Empire began to crumble. It became known as "the sick man of Europe" and the only thing holding it together really was the European powers lack of agreement on how to split it up. As other Christian minorities gained their independence one by one, the Armenians became more isolated as the only major Christian minority. Armenians and Turks began to have conflicting dreams of the future. Some Armenians began to call for independence like the Greeks and others had already received, while some Turks began to envision a new Pan-Turkic empire spreading all the way to Turkic speaking parts of Central Asia. Armenians were the only ethnic group in between these two major pockets of Turkish speakers and the nationalist Turks wanted to get rid of them altogether.

History FACT SHEET: ARMENIA KNIGHTS OF VARTAN ARMENIAN RESEARCH CENTER The University of Michigan-Dearborn, Dearborn, MI 48128 http://www.umd.umich.edu/dept/armenian /facts/armenia.html * The Republic of Armenia is one of three internationally recognized states (Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia) in Transcaucasia, the southernmost area of the former USSR. It is 11,620 square miles in area, slightly larger than the state of Maryland. It has a population of about 3.3 million (with an additional 400,000 Armenian refugees from Azerbaijan and Karabagh), of whom over 93% are Armenian. Armenia, accordingly, is the most ethnically homogenous state of all the former republics of the Soviet Union. There are some seven million Armenians throughout the world, including one million in the United States. There are also some 30,000 to 50,000 in the Detroit metropolitan area. * On Sept 21, 1991, Armenia held a referendum on independence and 94.05% of all eligible voters voted for it. Two days later, the Armenian Parliament declared the independence of Armenia from the USSR.

    Identification of Armenia in Literature
In the past Armenia has been connected with the biblical Ashkenaz. The Armenians are termed "the Ashkenazi nation" in their literature. According to this tradition, the genealogy in Genesis 10:3 extended to the populations west of the Volga. In Jewish usage Ashkenaz is sometimes equated with Armenia; in addition, it sometimes covers neighboring Adiabene (Targ. Jer. 51:27), and also Khazaria (David b. Abraham Alfasi, Ali ibn Suleiman; cf. If you were to classify the Caucasus by language, it could be broken up into three main groups - Caucasians, Indo-Europeans and Turks. Armenian is an Indo-European language, and are the largest group of Indo-European speakers in Caucasia. The family of languages is reckoned to have originated in western Turkey and spread west into Europe and east as far as India by 1000 BC. The speakers claim it is rich and beautiful. Armenians converted early to Christianity (the oldest churches were founded in the 4th century), and the head of the Armenian Orthodox Church, the Supreme Catholicos, lives in Echmiadzin. The Armenian rite, the Church's ritual of worship, includes ancient, rhythmical chants. It is the only ancient church that doesn't celebrate Christmas. Lamb is the staple meat, and kashlama , or boiled lamb, a specialty. The trout from Lake Sevan is excellent. Fruit and vegetables are generally not hard to find, despite the Azeri economic blockade. Beans, chickpeas, eggplant, yoghurt, tabouleh and other dishes common in the Middle East are the norm in Armenia. The local konyak , or brandy, is first rate, and it's claimed that Winston Churchill preferred the Armenian to the French variety.
