culture language literature arts ... art gallery Statue of David of Sassoun in Yerevan Armenian literature began to develop with the creation of the Armenian alphabet in 405-406 AD and the subsequent translation of the Bible into Armenian. Amongst the first texts to be translated and studied were those of the great Greek philosophers, politicians and theologians. The study of these ancient thinkers allowed for the deprovincialization of the Armenian culture. It also helps to explain why the first texts written by Armenians are neither naive nor primitive. One such early piece was the epic poem "David of Sassoun," celebrating the efforts of the Armenian bravemen who fought against Arab domination and for the freedom of the Armenian people. The oldest form of poetry, the hymn of religious inspiration, has played a major role in Armenian literature for centuries. This lyrical poetry, a combination of poetry and chant designed for use in religious services, has been written by the Armenians since the 5th century. Religious lyricism reached its pinnacle in the 10th century with the works of Grigor of Narek. His masterpiece, the Narek, is one of the most widely read works in Armenia.

Faculties (5) Faculty of Armenian Philology This was one of the first faculties at the University. It has two divisions: Armenian language and literature and journalism. Students are trained in Armenian language, Armenian literature, literary criticism, translation, print journalism, and radio and television journalism. The departments of Armenian literature and Armenian language have been and are important centers for Armenology. They have continued to play that role even after the creation of the National Academy's Institute of Literature and Language. The generation of Manuk Abeghian, Hrachya Acharian, Grigor Ghaptsian, and Arsen Terterian, who in the Twenties assumed the difficult task of teaching Armenian literature and language and creating instruction materials, has its worthy successors today. Academicians, well-known professors, and a large group of associate lecturers, all graduates of the University, successfully couple pedagogical and scholarly work at the Faculty. The Departments of Literary Theory and Foreign Literature, General Linguistics, Pedagogy and Journalism have all enjoyed notable academic success. The Armenian school of general linguistics has contributed to world linguistic thought. One area of study developed at the Faculty is the history of Armenian critical thought. Other important areas are lexicography, which has given rise to a distinguished library. Within the Journalism Department there is a course on the history of ancient and medieval Armenian journalism.

It will highlight the formation of the Armenian self-image; its principle features (political, religious, cultural); and its historical evolution in a multi-religious and multi-national region that has undergone territorial and cultural transformations and has experienced many conflicts, at times deadly, resulting from the clash of national-ethnic identities and aspirations, governed and driven by oppression, distrust, religious and cultural intolerance and aggressive political designs to name but a few. There will be class discussions. Students will be required to write one short term paper (5-7 pages long) and a final paper (8-10 pages long) reflecting research on a selected topic.

The Faculty of Oriental Studies: Information about Armenian
    Introduction
Armenia lies at the cross-roads of the Near East. To the west were the great empires of the eastern Mediterranean (Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman), to the east those of Iran (Achaemenian, Sasanian, Savafid). Dominated by Mount Ararat, the Armenian plateau separates the Caucasian range to the north from the plains of Mesopotamia to the south. A distinct Armenian people is attested from the sixth century BC; and with their conversion to Christianity at the beginning of the fourth century of our era the Armenians developed their own native literature. During the past thousand years a widely scattered diaspora has extended Armenian life and traditions outwards from the homeland over most of the globe. Armenians are thus heirs to many different cultures, and in their turn have made an individual contribution to numerous societies. Armenian studies have been pursued at Oxford since the mid nineteenth century. More recently, the establishment in 1965 of the Calouste Gulbenkian Professorship has guaranteed a permanent place for Armenian in the broader field of the Near East. Within the long span of Armenian history study of Armenia at 0xford concentrates on the period when Armenian sources give valuable information not only about Armenian culture itself, but also about neighbouring peoples of the Near East. Emphasis is therefore given to the study of the classical and medieval forms of the language and to Armenian literature from the fifth to the fifteenth centuries. Oxford is the only university in the UK where Armenian may be studied. The Armenian resources of the Bodleian library are excellent; the Oriental Institute also houses a working library for students. The present holder of the Calouste Gulbenkian Professorship of Armenian Studies is

    59. Mesrop Mashtots: The Golden Age Of Armenian Literature
Mesrop embarked on his second Holy task of translating the Holy Biblefrom the Greek and Syrian into the new Armenian alphabet.
http://home.tiscali.nl/~armen/Mesrop Mashtots The Golden Age of Armenian Literat
PREVIOUS BACK TO MAIN PAGE oon after the establishing of educational institutions to further spread the use of the new alphabet, St. Mesrop embarked on his second Holy task of translating the Holy Bible from the Greek and Syrian into the new Armenian alphabet. With the help of his students and Catholicos Sahak Partev himself, St. Mesrop accomplished one of the best works and accomplishments of his life. St. Mesrop and the Catholicos knew that the translation must be perfect, for the translation was of the Holy Book and The Word of God itself and any incomplete or imperfect translations would be a sin before God. Many of the modern linguists consider the translation of the Bible into Armenian an almost perfect match and have coined it the "Queen of Translations". After many years of devotion to his people and after creating the alphabet, which became the uniting force for all of the Armenians and forever became an eternal shield against foreign assimilation, St. Mesrop Mashtots made several journeys to the Caucasian Albania and created an alphabet for the peoples and tribes of Caucasian Albania. Unfortunately the alphabet died out along with the ancient and proud people of Albania, who after the Turkic-Mongol invasions were mostly massacred or forcibly converted to Islam and assimilated. He also created an alphabet for the people of Iberia (Georgia) which is in use to this day. St. Mesrop, after having lived and gone through a truly Christian path of human dedication, compassion and devotion to all of the peoples of God, as he himself called and regarded the people of this common Earth, on February 17, 440 AD gave his life to Lord. Koryun wrote, "St. Mesrop found his right place in the Kingdom of God in the heaven, with Our Almighty Savior". All of the people from all over Armenia, of every class, rank and social standing mourned his passing. St. Mesrop was ceremonially and honorably laid to rest in the town of Oshakan. His tomb, to this day remains a place of pilgrimage by the Armenian people from all over the world. The Armenian people come to pay their respect and to show homage to the great Armenian scholar, who saved and brought back the Armenian alphabet, thus forever ending the treat of assimilation and securing eternity for his people. A devout Christian preacher and servant of God, who devoted most of his life to the spreading of Christianity throughout all of the peoples and tribes of the Caucasus. St. Mesrop Mashtots, along with brilliant personalities such as King of Kings, Tigran the Great, founder and establisher of the Armenian Empire, the great foe of Rome and Gregory the Illuminator, the establisher and founder of the First Christian Nation of Armenia is one of the most ingenious and eminent personalities and faces in not only Armenian, but has his rightful place in the global world history and human heritage.
