References Due to the nomadic lifestyle of the Kazakhs and lack of a written language until the mid-nineteenth century, written literature in Kazakhstan has a relatively recent history. Until the 19th century, the oral epics of the traveling aqyns and jyraus (lyric poets and story tellers) formed the Kazakhs' main literary tradition.. Most of the legends tell about batyrs, or hero-warriors. Among the tales that have survived and make valuable treasuries of the national literature, are Koblandy-batir (fifteenth or sixteenth century), Er Sain (sixteenth century), and Er Targyn (sixteenth century), cover the war events against the Kalmyks; Kozy Korpesh and Bain sulu, both epics; and the love lyric Kiz-Jibek. Abay Ibrahim Kunanbayev, a poet of the late 19th century, is widely regarded as the father of Kazakh literature. During the reformist period of the early 20th century, before the Soviet imposition of socialist realism, several Kazakh authors developed a modernist body of Kazakh writing. Akhmet Baytursunov, an author and newspaper editor, is credited with leading this literary advancement. For their activism in cultural politics, these authors were imprisoned in the 1930s during Soviet leader Joseph Stalin's brutal purges, which targeted leading intellectuals among others. The best-known Kazakh literary figure of the Soviet period was Mukhtar Auezov, a playwright and novelist. The largest library collections in Kazakhstan are held by the Scientific and Technical Library of Kazakhstan, the Central Library of the Kazakh Academy of Sciences, and the National Library of Kazakhstan, all in Almaty. Other large libraries are affiliated with the state universities in Almaty and Karagandy.

Multilingual Glossary for Art Librarians
English with Indexes in Dutch, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Swedish
2nd revised and enlarged edition 1996
Introduction to the Revised Edition
In 1984 IFLA Section of Art Libraries published An Art Librarian's Glossary compiled by Ian Sheridan. A revised edition to take account of user's comments and suggestions was foreseen at that stage and in 1991 Sheridan's proposal for such a revised edition was accepted by IFLA on condition that indicators of gender for non-English words be included. The Art Libraries Section Standing Committee recognised this as an opportunity to do a thorough revision of the Glossary and four United States colleagues took responsibility for such a revision. They were Jean Shaw Adelman, Clive Phillpot, Beryl Smith and Susan Garretson Swartzburg. They revised the scope of the Glossary on the basis that there are numerous specialised glossaries which cover fields such as Art History. They also supervised a first revision of the existing translations and provided translations for the large number of new terms, and made a start on providing indicators of gender. It was further decided that definitions for all terms should be supplied. In October 1994 the responsibility for finalising the draft for publication reverted to the Chairman of the Section who co-ordinated a final check of all terms and definitions.

ART AND LITERATURE COLLECTION IN SEATTLE'S NEW CENTRAL LIBRARY TO BE NAMED AFTER PETER DONNELLY
Seattle City Librarian Deborah L. Jacobs has announced that the art and literature collection in Seattle's new Central Library will be named The Peter F. Donnelly Art and Literature Collection. Donnelly is president of Corporate Council for the Arts/Arts Fund, a Northwest-based funding agency that benefits arts organizations in western Washington. A formal announcement about the Donnelly collection will be made at the annual luncheon of Corporate Council for the Arts/Arts Fund at noon Wednesday, May 16, at the Seattle Sheraton Hotel. "It was a handful of leadership donors who pooled their resources to make this tribute to Donnelly," Jacobs said. "More than any other individual in our region, Donnelly has furthered a universal appreciation, understanding, love and support for the subjects reflected in the art and literature collection," Jacobs said. Six Seattle-area families contributed to this honoring opportunity: Nancy and Buster Alvord, Jane and David R. Davis, Katharyn Gerlich, The Neukom Family Foundation, Kayla Skinner and Virginia and Bagley Wright.
