Culture
Albania’s distinctive culture also borrows from the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Turks, Slavs, and Italians, who conquered the Balkans. Despite the foreign influences, Albanian culture retains a remarkable degree of homogeneity (sameness in composition).
Literature
Art and Architecture
Painting in Albania was strongly influenced by Byzantine art in the Middle Ages (5th century to 15th century), although by the end of the early Renaissance (15th century to 17th century) Italian influence was strong. The painting of icons (religious symbols) grew as a form of both public, or displayed, art and folk art. The style of icon painting, created in the mid-18th century, remained virtually unchanged through the early 20th century. Notable Albanian artists of the 20th century include Vangjush Mijo and Androniqi Zenge, both of whom are credited with introducing Western-style impressionism to Albania in the mid-1930s. Odhise Paskal, another 20th-century artist, sculpted Albanian heroes. Folk arts today include clothing decorated with delicate silver ornaments, wood-crafted items for the home, and woolen rugs.
The oldest architectural monuments in Albania date from the 1st millennium BC and were constructed by the Illyrians. From the middle of the 1st millennium BC through the middle of the 1st millennium AD, the Greeks and Romans who occupied Albania built structures still visible in urban and rural landscapes. In the Middle Ages, Christian religious architecture emerged in Albania’s Christian north while Islamic and Turkish-style architecture emerged in the south. Until the mid-20th century, most Albanian cities were dominated by two-story stone residences with tiled roofs. In wooded regions, houses were made of boards rather than stone; in coastal regions, they were clay, adobe, or reed with coatings of clay. Today, mass-produced Soviet-style housing predominates in urban and suburban settings while traditional architecture predominates in rural and mountainous regions.

(Statistics as of 6/30/01)
When local collections cannot meet your needs and a trip to visit a library to pursue a topic in greater depth is in order, it is important to know about the strengths of individual collections and the services they offer. While library catalogs provide bibliographic and holdings information, it is difficult to ascertain the relative depth of a collection in an area. Nor are all materials cataloged; many libraries have significant backlogs, particularly of older or more difficult to catalog materials. Moreover, even though the major collections are often broad in scope, they have special areas of depth, and the mid-sized collections often have materials not held elsewhere. Knowledge of faculty research profiles and cooperative agreements is useful in planning visits to libraries. Another factor worth considering is access to electronic databases; 31 of 46 libraries responding to a survey in 2000 have access to at least one electronic periodical index (to ascertain which libraries, see report by Ellen Hammond). Many of the

Overview of the Collection
The Art Library is pleased to announce the receipt of an important gift from a very distinguished benefactor. Mrs. George Levitine has generously donated to the University of Maryland Libraries the 2,000-volume collection belonging to her late husband Dr. George Levitine, distinguished scholar of art history and founding chair of the Department of Art History at the University of Maryland. While the Art Library will be the primary beneficiary of this gift, Special Collections will receive several hundred valuable rare books. Emblematic devices and their significance were a major area of research for Dr. Levitine, and his collection of emblem books became the centerpiece in his impressive library. The Levitine Collection is also rich in titles, mostly from France in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, concerning art, artists, cultural analysis, and the discussion of matters of tastes and esthetics. These books will be a valuable addition to the University of Maryland Libraries' already strong holdings in French art, history, literature, drama, and music. More about OKBN * ARLIS/NL
The Overleg Kunsthistorische Bibliotheken Nederland * Art Libraries Society / The Netherlands (OKBN * ARLIS/NL) is a consortium bringing together librarians and subject-specialists of those libraries in the Netherlands that hold specialized collections on the visual arts and the history of art and architecture. It has its origins in 1982, when eight librarians specialized in this field first organized some informal meetings to exchange experience, opinions and ideas. Since then the librarians of between thirty and forty institutions have regularly met, each in turn acting as host for the meetings that always remained as informal as in the early days of the consortium. It was only in 1995 that it was decided, for practical reasons, to transform this informal consortium into an official, registered association, which came into being in February 1996. Its members are the parti cipating institutions -with one vote each- and individual librarians and documentalists interested in the field who participate in the meetings, but cannot vote. It is governed by the general assembly and directed by a board consisting of five members elected from the assembly. The characters of the participating institutions diverge widely. They include purely academic and research libraries, museum libraries of various sizes and specialization, the libraries of some academies of art and schools of architecture and design, and those of some other institutions that have for various reasons built up a specialized collection in the field. The meetings engage the many interests that the individual participants, notwithstanding their diverging institutional background, have in common.
