THE SEVERAL LIVES OF FREDERICK DOUGLASS
Frederick Douglass is the subject of a exhibition in the reception area of the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections. Original letters, books, photographs, and artifacts trace the life and work of the famous abolitionist, orator, and publisher who made Rochester his home from 1847 to 1872. Items on display are from the Department's extensive Douglass collection and include the first book Douglass purchased after his escape from slavery, a copy of his newspaper "Frederick Douglass' Paper," two underground railroad passes written and signed by Douglass, and the first printing of his famous "Fifth of July" speech.
The exhibition is a companion event to the March 27-29, 2003 conference on Douglass' public life being organized by the Frederick Douglass Institute. The exhibition continues until May 10, 2003 and can be viewed during the Department's hours of 9-5 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday; 9-8 Wednesday; 11-3 Saturday.

Literature, libertines and Lenin's wife: famous people and libraries
Looking at famous people as librarians
Stephen Parnell Associate Librarian: Client Services
University of South Australia Library What do the following famous people have in common: Casanova, J.Edgar Hoover and Mao Tse-Tung If you said that they all worked undercover at some stage of their career you are only partially correct. The background they share is that each at some time of their life worked in libraries. They are famous librarians - although not necessarily famous as librarians. Casanova served as librarian for 13 years at the Castle of Count Waldstein of Bohemia, presumably coining the slogan that, "Librarians are novel lovers" along the way. Hoover worked as a cataloguer at the Library of Congress for five years before moving on to his better known job as Director of the FBI. Mao spent some time in the journals section of the Beijing University Library before going on to become Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party.

Summary of CiteSeer (also known as ResearchIndex) Autonomous Citation Indexing (ACI) CiteSeer uses ACI to autonomously create a citation index that can be used for literature search and evaluation. Compared to traditional citation indices, ACI provides improvements in cost, availability, comprehensiveness, efficiency, and timeliness. For more details, see Autonomous Citation Indexing All cited documents CiteSeer computes citation statistics and related documents for all articles cited in the database, not just the indexed articles. Reference linking As with many online publishers, CiteSeer allows browsing the database using citation links.

Standard ML
of New Jersey Standard ML of New Jersey (abbreviated SML/NJ ) is a compiler for the Standard ML '97 programming language with associated libraries, tools, and documentation. SML/NJ is free, open source software.
What's New
  • The SML/NJ source CVS repository has been moved to SourceForge. The SML/NJ SourceForge project page has a link to information about CVS access. The distribution files are also in the process of being moved to SourceForge. A mirror of the www.smlnj.org is available at the University of Chicago . The Bell Labs SML/NJ web site is now obsolete and will be replaced with an indirection to www.smlnj.org. [March 10, 2003] We have switched over to a new mailing list hosted by SourceForge . The name of the new list is . (To avoid receiving to much spam we do not show the name of the mailing list in clear text and render it as a JPG image instead. If spammers start using fancy OCR, we give up.)
  • Working version 110.42 available. This relatively small but important update (among other things) fixes a memory leak problem in CML and provides support for MacOS X 10.2. (We have provided a MacOS disk image with pre-compiled runtime systems for both MacOS 10.1 and 10.2 for use by those without developer tools. See the README file within this disk image for details.)
