April 3, 2003 Headmaster's Back-to-school Night Remarks, 2002 In addition to the local recognition our expansion has gained us, Hilltop has also gained recognition on the state and national level with the successful accreditation visit of the New Jersey Association of Independent Schools last spring. Hilltop is now officially certified for accreditation and has just one step to go to complete the full-accreditation process. This is a major milestone for the school. But these obvious signs of growth and success are not where the growth we are proudest of has occurred. This growth has occurred in our children, our classrooms and our program. April 2001 New York City March 2002 Wynton Marsalis and Lincoln Center Release Jazz Appreciation Curriculum By Marie Holmes Wynton Marsalis, renowned jazz musician and Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, divided the auditorium of MS 44 into two parts and taught the audience a simple call and response – “How are you?” “I’m fine” – to demonstrate the clave , a common rhythm in Latin Jazz. The middle-schoolers that joined Marsalis onstage, who were selected for their perfect attendance records, had already mastered the clave and other elements of jazz music. They wowed the audience with their improvisational skills as they demonstrated the break , scat-singing and playing their kazoos with aplomb. Marsalis and others came to MS 44 to promote their Jazz for Young People Curriculum, a joint effort between Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation and Scholastic, Inc. Mayor Bloomberg stopped by to congratulate Marsalis and his collegues and to officially proclaim February 26, 2002 Jazz Education Day in New York City. Teaching Changed My Life How A German Scholar Found Extremely Hard Work and Happiness in A Classroom By John Romo When the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education Alumni Association held its Celebration of Educational Excellence awards program October 17, they chose as their keynote speaker an alumnus of the school who had recently been named as a college president. John Romo M.A. '73 became the president of Santa Barbara City College (SBCC) last summer after three years as chief operating officer of Planned Parenthood in New York. He had previously served in various capacities at SBCC. Following are excerpts from his remarks to alumni and current graduate students. I came to Santa Barbara from the Los Angeles area in 1968, and never looked back. What brought me here was a Regents Fellowship to pursue studies in German Literature. My wife was offered a job as a speech and language therapist in the Goleta Union School District, and I began my work as a German scholar. The German literature program was excellent, but I very soon realized that I had made a mistake. I wasn't appropriately committed to the life of a German literature scholar.
