History of Painting History of Painting 1. Painting Principles and Techniques Ageless Elements: What's in a Painting?
1 class period Artists who are worlds apart often use the same techniques and share similar ideas. Engage students in activities that compare the elements of contemporary artworks with the elements of past works. Activities are designed to spark discussion and offer useful questions to begin to think about art. 2. Painting before 1300 2d. Greek and Roman Painting Ancient Greek Vases An Ode to Form and Function.
One or two class period Ancient Greek potters and painters teamed up to create an art form that was both functional and beautiful. From the thousands of vases that have been found, we can glimpse what life was like in their time. Greek vases, created in a myriad of sizes and shapes, were not only essential household items, but greatly prized works of art. Have students explore and draw the beauty that poet, John Keats found in Greek vases. (Submitted by Lori Rogers, Art Teacher, Lower Merion Schools, PA) 6. Two Hundred Years of the Baroque

    Discipline Based Art Education
Discipline Based Art Education (commonly called DBAE) is an art education method that goes beyond painting a pretty picture. DBAE promotes higher level thinking skills, original problem solving skills, cultural and global awareness, verbal and non-verbal communication, and other skills that will help students throughout their lives. These goals are accomplished by teaching art history, criticism and aesthetics as well as production. For an example we will use a lesson on making clay pots using the coil method. That lesson provides the teacher with the opportunity to help the students learn about proportion, technique, and how the shape of the pot causes different feelings in viewers (pots can be graceful, strong, awkward, etc.) While the students make the pots, they solve problems like, "Do I want my coils to make designs on the pot? Why or why not?", and, "How do I make my pot look delicate?" The students' pots can be can be related to pots made in other cultures, like the Greeks, the Aztecs, the Japanese, or others.

Refrigerator to Renoir: Great Art Lessons on the Net
American writer Henry Miller said, "Art teaches nothing, except the significance of life." Few teachers would argue the importance of teaching art in schools. How many times have you seen a student who struggles in every other subject light up when you do the simplest art project? You don't need to be Picasso to teach valuable artistic concepts in your classroom, but you may need a little guidance. These art lessons will fill the void, give you perspective, and move you into motion! When you think about art, does the phrase "I can't draw" come to mind? Many teachers realize that their best efforts don't come close to those of "real" artists, but don't let that stop you! With these art lessons, even your artistic skills will improve.
  • Draw a panda. Students of any age can learn to draw a simple Panda with the help of instructions from Draw and Color With Uncle Fred . Cartoonist Fred Lasswell's Web site offers directions for drawing many different figures that students may then color in any way they choose. The drawings use basic shapes that reinforce students' understanding of geometry and help them reduce objects in their minds to their components. It is then easier for students to re-create the objects on paper.
