antasy art is about wonder and enchantment, about the impossible, the stuff of fairytales, folklore, magic, dreams and mysteries - but when it's 'light' fantasy, it deals with these themes in a lighthearted, perhaps even a humorous, way. There is no need, as in science fiction art, to make sense, to be rationale, to extrapolate from what is known. Any sort of flights of fantasy are possible, including those made with the aid of dragons, fairies, mermaids and unicorns. Fanciful animals and characters, those drawn from classical tales as well as modern ones, are acceptable as subject matter. In 'dark' fantasy, the supernatural world, mystery, magic and classically 'gothic' elements combine to make sometimes inscrutable, sometimes dreamlike, visions come alive. At its darkest, such fantasy art can be the stuff of nightmares, but since fantasy art covers such a wide range of subjects and styles, it's the execution - the way the subject matter is treated, rather than just the subject matter alone - that makes some images darker rather than 'lighter'. The artistic influences most often found include the works of Brueghel, Bosch and Escher. Arthurian legend, medieval symbolism, vampires, monsters, images that are folkloric or literary in origin, all can be fearful or frightening, but in 'dark' fantasy they are also entertaining, poetic, beautiful, provocative, and emotionally involving. Sometimes, it's hard to draw the line between 'light' and 'dark' fantasy; what may be beautiful and lighthearted to one viewer may seem merely saccharine to another. You must be the judge!
