Arthritis
The McDougall Program:
(Diet and Lifestyle Implications):

Cause: Arthritis means "inflammation of a joint". There are many known and unknown causes for the more severe forms of arthritis. An example of a form of arthritis with a known cause is gout, due to the consumption of foods (rich in purines) by susceptible persons. Osteoarthritis is supposed to be "a normal part of aging". Many aggressive and crippling forms, including rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, and systemic lupus, are grouped together as "inflammatory arthritis". Their cause is generally held to be unknown. But, consider these facts:
Inflammatory arthritis is much more common among people of countries where rich foods are eaten. Such places are the United States, Canada, Western Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. In parts of the world (including most of Asia and Africa) where people eat little meat and few dairy products, where grains, vegetables and fruits make up most of their diet, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, and lupus arthritis are very rare. In the few individuals in whom an arthritis does occur, the disease is mild and not crippling.

A healthy diet can help ease arthritis
Arthritis sufferers are being warned that drastic and faddy dieting will not "cure" their condition. And that starting the New Year with a healthy and balanced diet will be better than looking for a wonder cure. Experts are increasingly concerned at claims that arthritis can be tackled by simply switching to a specific diet. Fergus Logan, chief executive at the Arthritis Research Campaign (ARC), said there was no "quick fix" cure for arthritis. "People with arthritis desperately want to help themselves by finding a diet that suits them but there is simply no quick fix, miracle diet that will cure arthritis. Healthy "If there was, we would be shouting it from the roof-tops. Eating a healthy diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and at least two portions of oily fish a week is beneficial, but our common-sense advice is that people should expect minor improvements rather than a miracle. "A lot of excessive claims are made in the media and in magazines and books about the latest wonder food or fad but there is very little real evidence to back them up."

Lose weight and eat healthily to feel better – but don’t expect diet to "cure" your arthritis. Do Diet Foods Work?

Arthritis by Susan G Wynn, DVM Anyone who has lived with an older, stiff and disabled dog has experienced the heartbreak of arthritis. This slowly progressive disease starts with almost undetectable discomfort, and may progress to the point that the animal refuses to stand, walk outside for constitutionals, or even eat. Arthritis actually comes in different forms, with different causes, and can attack dogs and cats regardless of breed or age. Although causes may range from autoimmune rheumatoid arthritis (which is more common in humans, by the way) to Lyme disease and primary cartilage degeneraton in young dogs, by far the most common type is degerative osteoarthritis. As our animals age, the bony joints begin to move less smoothly, and bony spurs may develop in the body's attempt to stabilize these "creaky" joints. Joint instability and bony proliferation cause pain when the animal moves. Your pet may not be able to tell you if he or she is in pain due to arthritis. Many people expect their pets to cry, but old dogs and cats don't moan and complain about their aching joints! You may only see slight trouble in getting up and down, climbing stairs or jumping up on furniture or into cars, soreness hours after exercise, or even a new grumpiness. This is one reason that yearly exams are so important for older dogs and cats.

Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium, which is important for building and maintaining strong bones. Calcium-rich foods include:

Home Diet and Arthritis Symptoms Information provided by Diet and Arthritis Symptoms If you have arthritis, you may wonder about the helpfulness of particular foods or diets touted to improve your symptoms. Do foods like red meat, citrus fruits, tomatoes, potatoes, bell peppers, aspartame or alfalfa sprouts aggravate your condition? Will eliminating these foods from your diet improve your symptoms? Because the symptoms of arthritis vary from day to day, it seems natural to think that what you eat might affect how you feel. Scientists are testing this notion. Three areas currently under investigation are
    • How low-calorie, low-fat and low-protein eating plans might affect arthritis Benefits and risks of omega-3 fatty acids from cold-water fish (salmon, mackerel and herring) or plant oils in reducing joint tenderness Whether diet affects the immune system that causes the swelling and soreness of certain types of arthritis
Currently, no scientific evidence supports the theory that any particular food makes your joint pain or inflammation better or worse. Other than weight control, doctors don't recommend any special diet for people with arthritis.

Someone who has rheumatoid arthritis and therefore has a bad deficiency in potassium should be able to acquire the as much as the missing fifty or sixty thousand or so milligrams missing from the one hundred thirty to two hundred thousand normally present (depending on the weight of non fat tissue, that is usually almost 2000 milligrams per kilogram of weight [Flink ] ).again in only a few months or less and largely heal any reversible damage (such as possibly the fundamental changes in ion channels of arthritics [Trujillo] ) in only a few more weeks using food alone. This should be possible even though arthritics tend to have a higher amount of the potassium excreting hormone, aldosterone, than normal people [Khetagurova] do. It is only necessary to select the right food and prepare it correctly . Large amounts of potassium are possible from food alone as some South American Indians receive over 8 thousand milligrams per day from their food [Oliver]. Potassium can be increased more quickly with potassium chloride supplements also, but unprocessed food is the safest way, and can rarely cause

of the Health On the Net Foundation It is my contention that potassium deficiency is either causing, or greatly making worse, rheumatoid arthritis which I will shorten to "arthritis" in these articles. In assessing the possibility of this hypothesis people have little to go on. Virtually any textbook in the past would devote no more than a paragraph to potassium which would state that potassium is never deficient in the diet, or give one exception to the dozen or more known, or in some only under clinical conditions. The reason for this careless treatment of potassium is probably because potassium is present in almost all foods as grown in large quantities. Professionals think about it as if it were air or water. However even air and water can be deficient and if voluminous texts are not written about these deficiencies, it is because both deficiencies can be detected by our senses. Extremely powerful emotions and instincts impel people to correct these deficiencies immediately and at any cost. Potassium is odorless, colorless, and, in the usual concentrations, tasteless. There is no way to detect a deficiency and cell content can not even easily be assessed in the body by modern analytical procedures. Whole body cell content is virtually "invisible".
