It seemed that dairy products were to blame for her arthritis, for when sheeliminated them from her diet, the arthritis disappeared completely.

Foods and Arthritis Millions of people suffer from painful and swollen joints associated with arthritis. In the past, many doctors told arthritis patients that dietary changes would not help them. However, this conclusion was based on older research with diets that included dairy products, oil, poultry, or
meat. New research shows that foods may be a more frequent contributor to arthritis than is commonly recognized. It is clear that, at least for some people, a healthier menu is the answer. Different Types of Arthritis Arthritis is actually a group of different diseases. Osteoarthritis is a gradual loss of cartilage and overgrowth of bone in the joints, especially the knees, hips, spine, and fingertips. At least 85 percent of the population above the age of 70 has osteoarthritis, which seems to be the result of accumulated wear and tear. Although it can cause painful episodes, it is characterized by only transient stiffness and does not cause major interference with the use of the hands. Rheumatoid arthritis, which affects over 2 million people, is a more aggressive form of the disease. It causes painful, inflamed joints, which sometimes become damaged.

There is no special diet for arthritis sufferers, but losing 10 to 20 poundsif you're overweight will relieve the stress on your hip and knee joints.

Arthritis Manager Home Arthritis Manager What's Your Arthritis Action Plan? A minor bang of her knee gave Pam insight into the pain and limited mobility caused by arthritis. Her soreness subsided in a few days, but the 42-year-old mother vowed to exercise, watch her weight, reduce stress and find other ways to minimize her risk of developing arthritis. If you're like Pam, you probably don't worry about your joints until you get a wake-up call, says Michael Weinblatt, M.D., who wrote about Pam and other case studies in his book, The Arthritis Action Program. There is no cure for arthritis, which afflicts one out of every six Americans and impacts the ability of more than 7 million Americans to do everyday activities such as dressing, walking and bathing. But new drug and alternative treatments and lifestyle changes can help slow the debilitating effects of the disease. "I think patients can do something to make a difference in their life," says Weinblatt, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, medical co-director of clinical rheumatology at Harvard's Brigham and Women's Hospital, and president of the American College of Rheumatology. The number of Americans with arthritis is expected to climb from 43 million to 60 million in 20 years, as baby boomers move into the prime years for developing the common form of the disease. There are more than 100 types of arthritis, but the two most common are:

85. Managing Arthritis: Q & A's
People with arthritis should have the same healthy diet as other peopleĀ—onebased on fruits, whole grains, and vegetables, and low in saturated fat.

Introduction
Fitness Nutrition Longevity
Back to Longevity

Does everybody get OA eventually?
OA is not inevitable, but it is very common. About 70% of those over 65 show some evidence of OA in X-rays. Poor posture and being chronically overweight and/or sedentary may promote OA. So can various occupational or sports injuries, especially repeated knee injuries. Wearing high heels can promote or aggravate OA, which is more common in women than in men. Still, even slim, active people with good posture and no history of injury can develop OA.
Does diet make any difference in preventing or treating OA?
What about exercise? Should I slow down?
Exercise is your friend, though pain may mean that you have to slow down at times. But "quit" should not be in your vocabulary. The insidious thing about OA is that joint stiffness and pain may make you want to quit, but this can only lead to stiffer joints. Inactivity weakens the muscles that stabilize joints. You need exercise to keep your muscles strong and to build flexibility. Several studies have shown that exercise such as walking and resistance training—if programmed to your level of ability—can reduce pain and improve flexibility.
But you should check with your physician first and possibly get a referral to a physical therapist. The Arthritis Foundation can provide information about the special exercise classes and self-management classes it sponsors. Call 800-283-7800 to find your local chapter, or visit them at

Arthritis: relief through vegetarianism
by Lara Greguric The symptoms began a few years ago. One morning, I awoke and was unable to move my hands. They were swollen shut into fists and attempting to wiggle my fingers was extremely painful. Over the next couple of weeks, the symptoms spread into other joints. My wrists, my shoulders, my knees and the joints in my feet became stiff, swollen, and tender. After a few weeks of suffering, I finally realized that this was not normal and went to see my family doctor. He referred me to a rheumatologist. At the ripe old age of 21, I was diagnosed with arthritis. I was in shock upon hearing this diagnosis. I kept thinking "why me?" Arthritis was something that 85-year-old grandmothers get, not healthy, fit young adults. Unfortunately, that belief is a myth. Arthritis is a blanket term for a disease that encompasses over 100 different conditions ranging from mild forms of tendinitis and bursitis to the crippling rheumatoid arthritis. As a disease, arthritis does not discriminate. It can inflict young children still in diapers, individuals in the prime of their lives, as well as the elderly. The condition is marked by an inflammation of the lining of the joints, resulting in joint and muscoloskeletal pain and eventual loss of mobility. Doctors do not yet know what causes arthritis and, although there is no known cure, symptoms can be treated through a variety of medications and lifestyle changes. Immediately after my diagnosis, my symptoms worsened. I was mildly depressed and in a great deal of pain. There were days when I couldn't even get out of bed because of the swelling and stiffness. I was also experiencing a limited range of motion in some affected joints. I could no longer lift my arm up high enough to blow dry my hair and doing up zippers on the backs of dresses was impossible.

Welcome to the Webrary! I am the Webrarian at Arthritis Insight and I'm here to help you find your way around the web. Sometimes finding specific information on the internet can be difficult. You pop a phrase into a search engine and you get back thousands of web pages that you need to sort through and try to figure out which ones have the information you?re looking and which ones don?t. I can help. Send me your subjects and questions and I?ll dig through the search engines and find a few links that will actually give you some answers. This week's question:
I was told that I have Shermans Disease but the doctor didn't tell me much on it. I was wondering if you could please send me some information on it please. Thank you for your time GREETINGS FROM THE WEBRARY!
We get alot requests like this one. While we would love to be able to send literature out to everyone, we just don't have the money or the manpower to take care of all of requests. So, for the time being, we'll have to keep trying to offer as much information as we can on the web site. Hopefully, sometime in the near future this will change and we'll be able to put together pamphlets on different subjects that can be sent via snail mail for you to read at home.

Deborah Hutton, in her book Vogue Futures disagrees. She says "the load of flesh rebounding on the bones and the pull of muscles on ligaments provides a positive stress that stimulates the bone-producing metabolism and promotes the uptake of calcium. Very skinny women might be a designer's dream but they are an orthopedic physician's nightmare - since their much envied small size puts them at greater risk of painful fractures, deformed spines and warped widow's humps." On the other hand, if you are really fat, you are at higher risk of heart disease, diabetes and other such weight related diseases. In such cases, you really should do something about your weight. How do you know if you are fat?
