In response to concerns over the rheumatoid arthritis (RA) drug leflunomide (Arava ), the FDA appointed an advisory panel of experts to review data and determine if the safety risks of leflunomide were acceptable.
Based on the current safety data, an FDA panel of experts said that additional information is needed in order to determine whether or not there is an increased risk of lymphoma in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients receiving TNF inhibitors. 22. Psoriatic Arthritis By Drdoc On-line
Explains the association of arthritis with psoriasis. Includes symptoms, treatments, and example photos.
http://www.arthritis.co.za/psoriasis.html
Psoriatic arthritis by drdoc on-line Psoriasis is a relatively common skin condition characterized by increased turnover of the skin to produce plaques of keratinized scales and nail changes.
Common skin sites include the flexures of the knees, elbows, umbilicus, behind the ears and at the scalp lining - anteriorly and posteriorly.
Nail changes include pitting and ridging of the nails and are common. Less widely known but well described is the association of arthritis with the psoriasis.
In fact 5-8% of psoriasis patients develop an arthritis.
The arthritis is preceded by the rash in 70-80% of cases, but in 10 % precedes the rash.
The delay in developing the rash may be months to years. In approximately 15% the rash and arthritis appear at the same time.
The severity of the rash does not mirror the severity of the arthritis and a flare of the rash does not necessarily coincide with an arthritis flare.
Nail changes are present in 80% of patients with the arthritis versus 20% without arthritis.

DIET: THE ONLY REAL HOPE FOR ARTHRITIS A dentist writes, "In April of 1994 I met you briefly at the Michigan Dental Association Annual Meeting in Grand Rapids. During this seminar, I asked you about my 4-year-old son having juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Bryan was on 35 mg of prednisone (a powerful steroid) and 1200 mg of Advil daily. He was in so much pain he screamed and cried day and night. In one year he lost weight and did not grow one inch. His blood work reflected a sed rate of over 40 (This is a measurement of severity of inflammation and should be below 5). The suggestions you gave me that day lead me to remove all animal products from his diet, as well as refined carbohydrates." "Within six months, we had Bryan off all his medication. He was free of pain, gaining weight and growing again. His last blood work was superb with a sed rate of 1 - can you believe it!" Diseases of the muscles and bones are among the most common of all human afflictions, affecting all ages, but becoming more prevalent with years. Government surveys indicate in the United States approximately 33% of adults currently suffer from troublesome arthritis with symptoms of swelling, limitation of motion, or pain. Approximately half of all people over 65 years report having arthritis. The regions of the body most affected are the neck, lower back, hip and shoulder. traumatic arthritis . Joints can be infected with bacteria resulting in

Arthritis and degenerative joint disease
Most large dogs develop arthritis as they age. Although there are no miracle cures, much can be done to make pets with arthritis more comfortable and improve their lives.
Soft comfortable place to sleep
Your dog's bed should be as comfortable as your own. An old mattress or soft couch is excellent. Soft foam rubber at least four inches thick is good. Scout around for an old baby mattress.
Gentle, regular exercise
Provide limited, gentle exercise. Once around the block two or three times a day is about right. Avoid strenuous activity on the weekends alternating with little or none during the week.
Weight control
Older large-breed dogs often tend to be overweight. This discourages them from getting the exercise they need and aggravates their arthritis. The more weight on those poor old joints, the harder it is to move around. Any "light" diet is helpful.
Promote joint health
There are dozens of products for animals intended to relieve arthritis by promoting joint and cartilage health. Their active ingredients usually include glucosamine, chondroitin or perna caniculus, sometimes creatine, and often an assortment of miscellaneous vitamins and minerals. Their use has become nearly universal among veterinarians, no safety problems have arisen, and they are generally quite effective. In our opinion

Rheumatoid Arthritis
WHAT IS RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS? Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic disease that causes pain, stiffness, swelling and loss of function in the joints and inflammation in other body organs. CAUSE While the cause of RA remains unknown, rapidly advancing research is discovering the bodily reactions that lead to arthritis and joint damage. Recent studies show that certain people inherit a tendency to develop RA. HEALTH IMPACT
  • RA affects more than two million Americans. Direct and indirect costs of RA reached $65 billion in 1992. More than 75 percent of RA patients are women. Peak onset is between age 20 and 45. Osteoporosis is common in patients with RA.
DIAGNOSIS RA can be difficult to diagnose early because it may begin gradually with subtle symptoms. Blood tests and X-rays may be normal initially. The disease varies among individuals with respect to symptoms, joints affected and the nature of other organs involved, such as the eyes, lungs or skin. Other types of arthritis may mimic RA. Skill and experience are essential to reach a precise diagnosis and to arrive at the most appropriate treatment. The classification criteria established by the American College of Rheumatology include prolonged morning stiffness in the joints, characteristic nodules under the skin, joint erosions apparent on X-ray tests, and blood tests of an antibody known as rheumatoid factor.

MY VICTORY OVER RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS
By Loretta Godbout
I am writing this to share with you my recovery from rheumatoid arthritis by following a single Edgar Cayce reading (951-1) which was published in There is a River
In 1959, I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and I was crippled for the ensuing 8 years. The disease was so severe that my knees were greatly swollen and I was in constant pain. Suggested medical treatments consisted of scraping the bones, using long needles to draw off fluid from the joints, and joint replacement surgery, all of which did not hold promise of a permanent solution.
In my mind, I kept thinking that there had to be help, that the body could be healed and, after eight years, I found myself in a Woolworth's Dime Store in Long Beach, California. I saw a book on a revolving stand entitled, There is a River . I picked it up and then put it back saying to myself, "Loretta, you have books upon books, and you haven't read those you have, you don't need another one." Two weeks later, with the title ringing constantly in my mind, I returned to Woolworth's and bought the book. Once I began reading it, I couldn't put it down and I stayed up all night, eventually finding the case histories published in the back of the book. There was one case of arthritis for a young girl of 18. I read that reading and immediately began making two lists, one for things to do and one for things to buy. I had difficulty finding everything I needed, especially

A rthritis, one of the oldest disease known to mankind, is the inflammation of one or more joints. It occurs in all races at all times. Decline in joint function generally begins at age 30. No one really knows the exact cause of this painful and disabling disease. However, there are two theories: 1. Infection 2. Body's own defenses go out of line and attack its own tissues Also experts believe that emotional stress plays a very important role in the cause of arthritis.

  • 28 million people are affected in the United States. Women are affected four times as often as men. One out of two women and one in eight men over age 50 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime.
What is Osteoporosis? Osteoporosis is a disease of the skeletal system. The bones lose density, become brittle and prone to fracture. It is the major cause of bone fractures in older people, especially postmenopausal women. What causes it? A certain amount of bone density is lost as a part of aging. During the mid-30s, everyone begins to lose very small amounts of bone. Bone loss accelerates at menopause, with some women losing up to 30% of bone mass in the first five years. There are certain risk factors that increase a person's chance of having osteoporosis. Some are unavoidable such as being a post-menopausal female, being thin or "small boned" and aging. However many are avoidable. Smoking, alcohol use, long term use of corticosteroids, lack of exercise and low intake of dietary calcium all can contribute to the development of osteoporosis.
