Aristotle One of the most fascinating things in the world to me is the twin concepts of Mythology and Folklore. I am constantly amazed at the how the different mythologies and folklores of the world have so much in common, and yet differ from one another in so many ways. As you may have gathered, I am a huge fan of mythology in its many different forms and cultural styles. This page reflects some of my tastes in the various mythologies out there, and there are some very interesting pages that readers of this page might wish to look at and pursue.
Myth and Meaning
As already noted, I am a big fan of mythology, and there is a wealth of mythological and folklore resources on the internet. Two of the best places to start on the Web are the Encyclopedia Mythica and the Encyclopedia Mystica , both of which are superb sources of information. Another excellent resource on the Web is the

Lugodoc's Guide to Celtic Mythology
Through a monstrous perversion of the Bard's art, Lugodoc has reduced the entire canon of Celtic myth into bite-sized chunks, easily digested by today's 3-minute attention spanned video game-addicted goldfish-minded web-surfing generation. This is not a telling of Celtic myth, only a map. Chronological sense is maintained except where this would ruin the flow of the Celtic knot of interweaving stories. Try too hard to put these in proper order and you will go mad. Myth is not history. Some stories appear under their traditional titles, some I have had to make up. Some things in it are devilish lies, and some poetical figments; some seem possible and others not; some are for the enjoyment of idiots. There are two main cannons of myth, Irish and Welsh
Irish Mythology
The oldest of these stories were composed in the pagan Celtic iron age of Ireland, possibly as early as 300 BC, and passed on in the druidic oral tradition until the coming of Christianity and the decay of the druidic priesthood in the 5th century AD. The stories were then passed on by wandering bards, added to and bits lost, until the first scraps were first written down in a highly confused order with odd legal and historical notes on cow-hides by early Irish Christian monks in the 7th century. The oral tradition continued to grow and mutate, monks kept writing them down, and manuscripts were copied and then lost. These myths are scattered about in several still extant ancient Irish manuscripts written by Christian monks between the 12th and 14th centuries AD, such as The Book of the Dun Cow (LU), The Book of Leinster (LL) and The Yellow Book of Lecan (YBL). Some were written as late as the 18th century. The original pagan myths therefore suffer from varying degrees of Christian contamination.

Roger Sherman Loomis
King Arthur was not an Englishman, but a Celtic warrior, according to Roger Sherman Loomis, whose special research into the background of the Arthurian legend has revealed findings which are both illuminating and highly controversial. The author sees the vegetation goddess as the prototype of many damsels in Arthurian romance, and Arthur's knights are the gods of sun and storm. And Guenivere is the leading lady in a nature myth which her son Mordred plays the part of the Irish god Mider. Arthur himself is another form of the Maimed King, embodiment of the enfeebled forces of Nature awaiting spring. If Loomis's arguments are accepted, where does this leave the historic Arthur? Was Arthur a god from the beginning? It's probable that Arthur began as a historical figure, grew in stature in Welsh, Dumnonian and Breton myth and completed his ultimate persona by reigning supreme in European romance. Buy it!

ELL 254: The Arthurian Legend Lecture 3: The Dark-Age Celtic stratum of the Arthurian legend Last lecture We looked at the evidence for the historical Arthur, and concluded that Arthur probably existed, that he was probably a British battle leader of the early sixth century who fought the Germanic invaders of Britain, and that he may possibly have established a prosperous though short-lived kingdom, but nothing is certain. This lecture We look at the first stage in the development of the Arthurian legend. The argument will be that certain key features of the Arthurian legend as it now exists can be explained by the Celtic context in which it originated and developed for several centuries. In particular, aspects of pre-Christian Celtic mythology were assimilated to the legend, the most important of which are:
  • Merlin Guinevere Otherworld quests The Wasteland The Grail Avalon
History, legend, and myth a) History : actual states of the world in the past b) Legend : a culture's belief in how the past was, possibly but not necessarily based on history c) Myth : a culture's explanatory mechanism for the structure of its perceived reality The concept of the Arthurian legend In the course of the Dark Ages (c.600-900 AD), it came to be believed in the culturally-British parts of this island (that is, in present-day Cumbria, Wales, and Cornwall) that a British king named Arthur had existed, that he had led the British resistance against Germanic invaders, that he had established and presided over a glorious kingdom, and that this kingdom disappeared upon his death in battle. This legend may but need not have been based on an historical leader. What is certain is that the legend existed among the British by the time the Historia Britonum was written in the early ninth century, and that it has been developed and elaborated ever since. This lecture looks at the earliest form of the legend.
