Paul Gaugin Paul Gauguin is certainly an artist that should be regarded for his tremendous efforts as a man and an artist. If any modern art painter could be called loyal to art, it would be Paul Gauguin. He demonstrated a life that allowed him to capture the purest and wildest parts of humanity. Paul Gauguin died at a young age, but from the time he painted during the late 1890s, until today, his art remains as some of the most admired and respected. He was among the first to appreciate the importance of Primitive art. Later, contemporaries like Derain and Picasso would also embrace styles of Primitivism. Gauguin and his art deserve a place as one of modern arts most celebrated artists. 'Tahiti Scene' Childhood Paul Gauguin was born on 7 June 1848. He was born during a time when violence and chaos had become common place. His father, Clovis Gauguin, eventually decided, for the safety of his family, to move to Lima, Peru. Although his father died on the voyage across the seas, their family would later describe life in Peru as enjoyable. Here, Paul lived in the lush tropics, enjoying a carefree life. When the family decided years later to return to France, Paul took some time to adjust to the city change. He was an arrogant youth. He never appreciated school because he always felt he knew more than other students did. He was a social outcast amongst the students, and his lifelong practice of rejecting people seemed to originate from his days there. After completing his education at the age of seventeen, Gauguin tried other various activities. He joined the merchant marines, the navy, and eventually became a stock exchange broker. For some time during his early life, Gauguin had attained some measure of success.

Gauguin, Paul Claude Oscar Monet, (1840-1926), French Impressionist painter, who brought the study of the transient effects of natural light to its most refined expression. Monet was born on November 14, 1840, in Paris, but he spent most of his childhood in Le Havre. There, in his teens, he showed a talent for drawing caricatures, and in about 1858 he met the landscape painter Eugène Boudin, who encouraged him to paint out of doors rather than in the studio. In 1859, Monet committed himself to a career as an artist, and moved to Paris. During the 1860s he was associated with Édouard Manet, and with other aspiring French painters destined to form the Impressionist school—notably Camille Pissarro, Pierre Auguste Renoir, and Alfred Sisley. Ateneum: Collection of Prints In 1995, Finnish graphic art celebrated its centenary; a hundred years had passed since Gallen-Kallela made his first woodcuts, and immediately donated Flower of Death to the Museum. The first acquisition of Finnish graphic art was made in 1900, when a group of 23 etchings was bought from Hugo Simberg, representing his best work from the period 1897-99. Gradually, works by other pioneers of Finnish graphic art were also acquired: 13 prints by Gallen-Kallela in 1903, 25 prints by Edelfelt in 1904, another seven prints by Gallen-Kallela in 1905, and seven prints by Finch the following year. During the 1910s and '20s, the collection grew very slowly, however. Graphic art did not experience a breakthrough in Finland until the 1930s.
