Vincent van Gogh
Self-portrait The history of Impressionism would not be complete without the distinctive work of Vincent van Gogh. Paintings of this world famous artist are at the top of today's art price range. He began from drawing and painting dark realistic scenes, but after meeting Impressionists he employed their motifs, bright colours and style of painting. Van Gogh's life was afflicted with mental trouble. His short period of artistic co-operation with Gauguin ended with van Gogh's symbolic act of self-mutilation: he cut off an earlobe. Although most of his last months van Gogh spent under psychiatric treatment, paintings from this period brought him the greatest fame. Van Gogh's work became a basic influence on the development of the Fauvism and Expressionism.

    INTRODUCTION
The following images are accompanied by excerpts of letters written by Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh between 1887 and 1889. The two artists wrote often to one another, friends, and relatives. Van Gogh's most frequent correspondent was his brother Theo, an art dealer in Paris in the late 1880s. The quotations reveal that both men were avid chroniclers of the subjects they painted: peasants, townspeople, landscapes, and houses. The painters' candid remarks about their own canvases, most of which had either just been completed or were still in progress, offer unique perspectives on the Arles period. They also refer to a number of works painted before and after the artists' time together.

Yet not until now has there been a major exhibition devoted to fruitful creative interchange between these two very different painters. New Impressions
Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) and Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) met in Paris in the autumn of 1887. Both men had spent early adulthood pursuing diverse careers before deciding to become painters and both had left their native regions in search of new suns. They met at a time when artists were looking for ways to develop beyond impressionism, and so they turned to literature, to non-western forms of art, and to new models and locations for inspiration. VINCENT
By Don Mclean
Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and gray
Look out on a summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul...
Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and the daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colors on the snowy linen land. Now I understand What you tried to say, to me And how you suffered for your sanity And how you tried to set them free: They would not listen; they did not know how - Perhaps they'll listen now. Starry, starry night Flaming flowers that brightly blaze Swirling clouds in violet haze Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue Colors changing hue Morning fields of amber grain Weathered faces lined in pain Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand. Now I understand What you tried to say, to me And how you suffered for your sanity And how you tried to set them free: They would not listen; they did not know how Perhaps they'll listen now. For they could not love you But still, your love was true

Vincent Van Gogh
Written by Karen Crim Who was Vincent Van Gogh? Many people remember him as the famous artist who cut off his ear. But his life was much more than that. Like most people, Van Gogh dreamed of being loved, famous and living a full life. He did not, however, have the life of which he dreamed. Instead, it was full of rejection, poverty and inner turmoil. To better understand the complicated struggles he faced, embark with me on a journey through the world of Vincent Van Gogh. On March 30, 1852, a Dutch minister and his wife had a stillborn son, whom they named Vincent. On the same day a year later, they had a second son. This second son, also named Vincent, grew up feeling like a substitute for his dead brother. He desperately wanted to make a contribution to humanity, but by age 27, he felt his life was a failure. He had been fired from his jobs as an art dealer and lay minister, and he had fallen in love twice and been rejected both times. It was then that he decided to dedicate his life to art. Van Gogh's first pictures were still lifes and scenes of peasants at work. He favored dark colors and heavy brushstrokes. The Potato Eaters was his finest work of this period. In 1886, he went to Paris to visit his brother Theo and was attracted to the Impressionist art he saw there. He saw how the Impressionists handled light and color and treated their original themes from the town and country. As he began to develop his own artistic style, his palette became brighter and his brushwork more broken. He took his subjects from the city's cafes and boulevards and the open countryside along the Seine River. Interested in portraiture but unable to afford models while perfecting his skills, Vincent turned to his own image. He painted at least twenty self-portraits while in Paris.

Gogh, Vincent (Willem) van (b. March 30, 1853, Zundert, Neth.d. July 29, 1890, Auvers-sur-Oise, near Paris), generally considered the greatest Dutch painter after Rembrandt ; he powerfully influenced the current of Expressionism in modern art. His work, all of it produced during a period of only 10 years, hauntingly conveys through its striking colour, coarse brushwork, and contoured forms the anguish of a mental illness that eventually resulted in suicide. Among his masterpieces are numerous self-portraits and the well-known The Starry Night

Notelet Artists Related to Vincent Van Gogh!
Rosa Watkinson Liz Knappert
The Notelet artists Laurence Knappert Liz Knappert and Rosa Watkinson are three of seven brothers and sisters from Dutch parents. They are related to Van Gogh. The artists father Professor Jan Knappert remembers a Van Gogh painting of Sun Flowers on the wall of his grandfather's house when he was a small boy. He recounts the following story as he remembers it. "His grandfather was called Laurence Knappert and his grandfather's mother was Katerina Van Gogh. Katerina's brother was the father of Vincent so Laurence Knappert was his cousin. The father of Vincent was a Minister of the Dutch Reform Church in Harlingen, Holland. Vincent Van Gogh was always short of money and so Laurence Knappert loaned Vincent Van Gogh 100 Guilders in around 1885 which was a lot of money at the time. Vincent gave Laurence one of the Sun Flower paintings towards repayment of the loan. The painting was sold in 1935 during the depression, before Vincent Van Gogh became famous as a result of an exhibition in New York."
The Van Gogh sunflowers painting "Vase with Fifteen Sunflowers" was sold on the 30 March 1987 for 39.5 million dollars. The "Irises" was sold on the 11 November 1987 for 53.9 million dollars. The "Portrait of Doctor Gachet" on the 15 May 1990 for 82.5 million dollars and the "Self-Portrait (Without Beard)" on the 19 November 1998 for 71.5 million dollars.
