Biography Of Vincent Van Gogh
In 1886 van Gogh went to Paris to live with his brother Théo van Gogh, an art dealer, and became familiar with the new art movements developing at the time.
Influenced by the work of the impressionists and by the work of such Japanese printmakers as Hiroshige and Hokusai, van Gogh began to experiment with current techniques (see Ukiyo-E). Subsequently, he adopted the brilliant hues found in the paintings of the French artists Camille Pissarro and Georges Seurat.
The more than 700 letters that van Gogh wrote to his brother Théo (published 1911, translated 1958) constitute a remarkably illuminating record of the life of an artist and a thorough documentation of his unusually fertile output—about 750 paintings and 1600 drawings. The French painter Chaïm Soutine, and the German painters Oskar Kokoschka, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and Emil Nolde, owe more to van Gogh than to any other single source. In 1973 the Rijksmuseum Vincent van Gogh, containing over 1000 paintings, sketches, and letters, was opened in Amsterdam. Recommended reading from Amazon.com

Vincent (Willem) Van Gogh generally considered the greatest Dutch painter after Rembrandt; he powerfully influenced the current of Expressionism in modern art. His work, all of it produced during a period of only 10 years, hauntingly conveys through its striking colour, coarse brushwork, and contoured forms the anguish of a mental illness that eventually resulted in suicide.
In February 1888 Vincent van Gogh settled at Arles, where he painted more than 200 canvases in 15 months. During this time he sold no pictures, was in poverty, and suffered recurrent nervous crisis with hallucinations and depression. He became enthusiastic for the idea of founding an artists' co-operative at Arles and towards the end of the year he was joined by Gauguin. But as a result of a quarrel between them Vincent van Gogh suffered the crisis in which occured the famous incident when he cut off his left ear (or part of it), an event commemorated in his Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear
Starry Night
(MOMA, New York). He did 150 paintings besides drawings in the course of this year. In 1889 Theo married and in May 1890Vincent van Gogh moved to Auvers-sur-Oise to be near him, lodging with the patron and connoisseur Dr Paul Gachet. There followed another tremendous burst of strenuous activity and during the last 70 days of his life he painted 70 canvases. But his spiritual anguish and depression became more acute and on 29 July 1890 he died from the results of a self-inflicted bullet wound.

Vincent van Gogh BACK
Generally considered the greatest Dutch painter after Rembrandt, van Gogh's striking and exuberant paintings were all produced during a period of ten years. His Post Impressionist work hauntingly conveys through forceful color, aggressive brushwork and contoured forms, the anguish of a mental illness that eventually led to his suicide(new evidence seems to dispute that fact). After failing in both his career and love life, he turned inward and joined the ministry. In 1880, disenchanted with the priesthood, he discovered art as his new mission. Then after a trip to Paris in 1886, van Gogh discovered the Impressionists and Japanese prints which led to a transformation in his style. He went from darkly colored realism to vibrant expressionism. Van Gogh is the rarest of the rare in that it seems he never created an unsuccessful or mediocre image. Contrary to common belief van Gogh did:
  • sell a few paintings during his lifetime
  • owned a distinguished collection of paintings
  • was forged in his own lifetime
  • had a number of students
  • accidentally fell against a shotgun and then was mistreated by Dr. Gachet

Toledo Nearly everyone who has seen Van Gogh's masterful works has heard of the tortured life he led. When we think of Vincent Van Gogh, we picture his vibrating canvases of whirling and swirling intense colors. But who was this tormented man, and how did he become this way? Born in 1853 in the Netherlands in a small town named Zundert, Vincent Van Gogh was the eldest of six children. His father was a Dutch Reformed minister. As a youngster, Vincent had a flair for languages and studied English, French, and German. But at the age of 15, he abruptly left school never to return. It would seem that this abrupt departure was the beginning of his mental problems. He returned home for a year or so and then began work as an apprentice at a branch gallery of an international art dealership known as Goupil and Cie. He worked for this dealership for approximately seven years, bouncing back and forth between London and Paris. During this time he visited galleries and art museums and became very attracted to the Hague school of painting, as well as the Barbizon. These paintings featured pastoral themes. Around this time Van Gogh also seemed to become intensely interested in the Bible. When he was dismissed from Goupil and Cie due to his waning interest in his work there, he decided to become a clergyman.

Short biographies on approximately twelve artists are included. These describe the lives of the artists, the styles in which they painted, and names some of their famous works. In addition to the artists, the site describes a number of styles of art, including characteristics of the style, and famous artists whose work was done in that style. The members of this team then created their own art work in the different styles, and provided these as examples of how that style of art looks. As a fun way to test how much site visitors have learned, two interactive games, Hangman, and an All About Art Quiz, are available to site visitors. Dutch museums honor a native son Alan Riding The New York Times
Friday, March 14, 2003 AMSTERDAM The 150th anniversary of Vincent van Gogh's birth on March 30 could hardly go unnoticed here. In normal times the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam receives 1.6 million visitors a year, while about 300,000 visit the Kroller-Muller Museum near Arnhem, which owns the other major van Gogh collection in the Netherlands.
This year, linked for the occasion by a shuttle bus, the museums are hoping for a birthday boost to van Gogh tourism.
Their challenge is to present existing collections in ways that suggest an event. Here, they have taken different paths. The Van Gogh Museum is offering "Vincent's Choice: the Musee Imaginaire of van Gogh" through June 15, and "Gogh Modern," from June 27 to Oct. 12. At the Kroller-Muller, through Oct. 12, is "Vincent and Helene," Helene being the wife of Anton Kroller, the industrialist who financed her collecting passion.
Of the two shows now open, the Van Gogh Museum exhibition is perhaps the more interesting one because it throws fresh light on that artist's creative process. Most artists find inspiration in other artists, and van Gogh was unusually catholic in his taste, revering Rembrandt, Delacroix and Millet. But he admired many others and commented on no fewer than 1,100 works of art in his letters. "Vincent's Choice," the exhibition proposes, is the collection that van Gogh might have created.

Vincent Van Gogh
Van Gogh, Vincent , 1853-90, postimpressionist painter, b. the Netherlands. Van Gogh's works are perhaps better known generally than those of any other painter. His brief, turbulent, and tragic life is thought to epitomize the mad genius legend.
During his lifetime, Van Gogh's work was represented in two very small exhibitions and two larger ones. Only one of Van Gogh's paintings was sold while he lived. The great majority of the works by which he is remembered were produced in 29 months of frenzied activity and intermittent bouts with epileptoid seizures and profound despair that finally ended in suicide. In his grim struggle Vincent had one constant ally and support, his younger brother Théo, to whom he wrote revealing and extraordinarily beautiful letters detailing his conflicts and aspirations. As a youth Van Gogh worked for a picture dealer, antagonizing customers until he was dismissed. Compulsively humanitarian, he tried to preach to oppressed mining families and was jeered at. His difficult, contradictory personality was rejected by the women he fell in love with, and his few friendships usually ended in bitter arguments.
Ten years before his death Van Gogh decided to be a painter, fully conscious of the sacrifices this decision would require of him. His early work, the Dutch period of 1880-85, consists of dark greenish-brown, heavily painted studies of peasants and miners, e.g., The Potato Eaters (1885; Van Gogh Mus., Amsterdam). He copied the work of Millet, whose idealization of the rural poor he admired. In 1886 he joined Théo in Paris, where he met the foremost French painters of the postimpressionist period. The kindly Pissarro convinced him to adopt a colorful palette and thereby made a tremendously significant contribution to Van Gogh's art. His painting Père Tanguy (1887; Niarchos Coll., Paris) was the first complete and successful work in his new colors. Impressed by the theories of Seurat and Signac, Van Gogh briefly adopted a pointillist style.
