Browse Powells Art Books Leonardo Da Vinci: The Complete Paintings by Pietro C. Marani, Leonardo In this magnificent book, Pietro Marani, the director of the project to restore Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper, presents all the artist's known paintings. The history and significance of each are analyzed at length: we read, for example, that "from a very early date, Mona Lisa was considered among Leonardo's most extraordinary accomplishments, one that made every other artist 'tremble and lose heart.'" .... From its enigmatic cover (the lips of the artist's exquisite portrait of Ginevra de' Benci) to its extensive bibliography, Leonardo da Vinci comes the closest this reviewer has seen to being the ultimate art book. Leonardo da Vinci
L eonardo was born in Vinci, Italy on April 15th, 1452, the illegitimate son of a young notary. Leonardo grew up in an environment rich with scholarly texts and art, provided by his father, who himself taught Leonardo how to paint, and by his father's family. When he was in his late teens, Leonardo was sent to Florence to be an apprentice in the studio of famous renaissance sculptor Andrea del Verrocchio, where he met with other Renaissance artists Botticelli and Ghirlandaio, and continued honing his skills, which were proving to be greater than his teacher's... Leonardo's first moment in the sun came when Verroccio asked him to help paint an angel in his "Baptism of Christ" piece. Leonardo so impressed his master that Verrochio himself decided he would never paint again. Leonardo continued working with Verrochio for a few years, and then the two parted ways. Leonardo went on to be in the service of the Duke Ludovico Sforza of Milan, where he remained for 16 years. Leonardo didn't only paint for the Duke, but he also designed machinery, weapons, and a fair bit of architecture. Science and art were merged in an unending output of impressive works and studies. Leonardo's designs were so ahead of their time, that they even included plans for various assault vehicles, flying machines, and even a submarine.

Milwaukee, WI, USA
Prince Adam Karol Czartoryski of Poland will be at the Milwaukee Art Museum for the September 13 opening of Leonardo da Vinci and the Splendor of Poland: A History of Collecting and Patronage, an exhibition of 77 paintings from public and private collections in Poland. Prince Czartoryski, of The Princes Czartoryski Museum in Cracow, Poland, brings the jewel of the exhibition, Leonardo’s Lady With an Ermine, to Milwaukee. He shares the story of this work’s survival throughout the 20th century during the opening night celebration, including music and dance performances, at MAM September 13. The celebration begins at 5 p.m. and Prince Czartoryski speaks at 6:15 p.m. Organized by the Milwaukee Art Museum, the exhibition will be on view from September 13, 2002, to November 24, 2002. Leonardo da Vinci and the Splendor of Poland: A History of Collecting and Patronage is sponsored by We Energies and Christopher Seton Abele. Adding poignancy and power to this exhibition is Poland’s determination over the past 50 years to recover and restore national treasures that were stolen or displaced during World War II. The exhibition will tell, for the first time, the story of the fate of important collections of European paintings in Poland as well as works by late 19th century Jewish artists. A number of the paintings will be on view for the first time since recovery and conservation.

Leonardo da Vinci is "everybody's favorite weird artist," says author Gary Schwartz. His strange but beautiful pictures, painted 500 years ago, still fascinate people today. Understanding them, with their unusual creatures, imaginary constructions, and humans with animal characteristics, can tell us something about da Vinci himself, but even more about the times in which he lived.

Leonardo da Vinci of 2
Born 1452, Died 1519
Draftsman, Painter, Scientist
Italian
Inventor, artist, mathematician, naturalist, and philosopher, Leonardo da Vinci embodied the Renaissance idea of the artist as creative thinker rather than skilled craftsman. Born near Vinci in 1452, the charismatic Florentine spent his adult life employed by Europe's most powerful families, who allowed him to explore whatever struck his fancy. More than twenty years older than the great masters Michelangelo and Raphael, Leonardo pioneered the High Renaissance style of balance, serenity, and technical accomplishment for nearly a generation before the two other Renaissance masters arrived. "Great minds often produce more by working less, for with their intellect they search for conceptions and form those perfect ideas which afterwards they merely express with their hands," Leonardo wrote. Intense perfectionism and wide-ranging interests contributed to his small output of paintings. None of his architectural or sculptural works survive today, but more of Leonardo's drawings have survived than any of his contemporaries'. Notebooks filled with prescient investigations of everything from flight to water remained unknown until the nineteenth century. After the death of his patron Giuliano de' Medici in 1517

Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), Florentine artist, one of the great masters of the High Renaissance, celebrated as a painter, sculptor, architect, engineer, and scientist. His profound love of knowledge and research was the keynote of both his artistic and scientific endeavors. His innovations in the field of painting influenced the course of Italian art for more than a century after his death, and his scientific studies-particularly in the fields of anatomy, optics, and hydraulics-anticipated many of the developments of modern science. He spent his last years at the Chateau de Cloux, near Amboise, where he died on May 2, 1519.
