Muscles ripple in the drawing of a horse. And panic, passion and pity tear through painting and viewer at once, as the artist's reach winds like a thread through centuries, fraying off the subject and through the imagination of art lover and art snob alike. You can marvel simply at the physical materials on display in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's current exhibit of works by Leonardo da Vinci. Looking at sketches drawn in the late 1400s and early 1500s by anyone would be an inspiring experience. But in an age when e-mails are discarded and deleted seconds after they are created, it is difficult to conjure a description for the emotion viewers experience while seeing priceless pieces of art, created by one of history's largest personalities, that are roughly a half millennium old.

Leonardo da Vinci: biography
Still talked about and revered today, Leonardo Da Vinci is the most well known of The Old Masters of the Renaissance period in Europe, which is marked from early 14th to the late 16th century. Renaissance, meaning "rebirth" refers to the revival of the artistic styles of classical antiquity of Rome, especially in Italy. The term "High Renaissance" denotes the brief period of 1490's to 1520's and was created by only a handful of artists, including Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Titian, Raphael and Donato Bramante. Leonardo is at the forefront of these artists due to his broad studies of art, science, and natural phenomena. bodyOffer(22457) Leonardo followed the principal of study by observance of natural occurances. His art works also return to the classical style of pictorial representation or architectural composition with a balance achieved as a matter of intuition. No one element in the compositions takes importance over another: all achieve harmony together. Some of Leonardo's paintings at this time include "The Last Supper", Madonna of the Rocks", and the Mona Lisa". Up until the 20th century Leonardo's reputation was built on his art and art theory. Not until his notes became widely dispersed did he become known for his impressive range which included science, and his inventions.

Special thanks to the Microsoft Corporation for permission to use following biographical information from
Leonardo da Vinci was a Florentine artist, one of the great masters of the High Renaissance, who was also celebrated as a painter, sculptor, architect, engineer, and scientist. His profound love of knowledge and research was the keynote of both his artistic and scientific endeavors. His innovations in the field of painting influenced the course of Italian art for more than a century after his death, and his scientific studies—particularly in the fields of anatomy, optics, and hydraulics—anticipated many of the developments of modern science. Early Life in Florence In 1478 Leonardo became an independent master. His first commission, to paint an altarpiece for the chapel of the Palazzo Vecchio, the Florentine town hall, was never executed. His first large painting, The Adoration of the Magi (begun 1481, Galleria degli Uffizi), left unfinished, was ordered in 1481 for the Monastery of San Donato a Scopeto, Florence. Other works ascribed to his youth are the so-called Benois Madonna (c. 1478, Hermitage, Saint Petersburg), the portrait Ginerva de' Benci (c. 1474, National Gallery, Washington, D.C.), and the unfinished Saint Jerome (c. 1481, Pinacoteca, Vatican). Years in Milan About 1482 Leonardo entered the service of the duke of Milan, Ludovico Sforza, having written the duke an astonishing letter in which he stated that he could build portable bridges; that he knew the techniques of constructing bombardments and of making cannons; that he could build ships as well as armored vehicles, catapults, and other war machines; and that he could execute sculpture in marble, bronze, and clay. He served as principal engineer in the duke's numerous military enterprises and was active also as an architect. In addition, he assisted the Italian mathematician Luca Pacioli in the celebrated work Divina Proportione (1509).

X-rays of Leonardo da Vinci's Adoration of the Magi have revealed that the majority of paint was added by other artists after he left the work unfinished, scientists have said. The painting, which hangs in the famous Uffizi art gallery in Florence, was the subject of a nine-month study by Florence-based art diagnostician Maurizio Seracini. Thick colour and varnish obscure some of the detail
Mr Seracini used X-ray, infra-red, ultraviolet and high-resolution digital photography to produce thousands of detailed images of the work. The study was commissioned by the gallery itself, to help planned cleaning and restoration work connected with oxidised varnishes on the surface of the painting. Mr Seracini told BBC News Online: "Most of the paint has been added later. This dark orange colour is the result of colour added later."

    Leonardo da Vinci
Leonaro da Vinci was one of the greatest yet most enigmatic painters of the Italian Renaissance, leaving only a handful of completed paintings to his name. Born in 1452 in Florence, Leonardo trained as a painter and became a true master of the craft. He was not only a genius in painting but had an advanced knowledge of science and made many important discoveries. His portrait of the Mona Lisa, set in a landscape background as mysterious as the woman herself, is undoubtedly one of the most famous paintings of all time. Your Top 10 Artists: Leonardo da Vinci Michelangelo Pablo Picasso Vincent Van Gogh Salvador Dali Jan Vermeer Claude Monet Rembrandt (Harmenszoon) van Rijn Raphael (Rafaello Sanzio) Giotto What you have said: Leonardo's creative and disciplined mind explored, dissected, illuminated, expressed and expanded all elements of his world and time. He melded art with science, recognising that creativity is not bounded.

    http://www.kausal.com/leonardo/apprenticeship.html
    Leonardo da Vinci
    Apprenticeship
Leonardo started an apprenticeship in the workshop of Andrea del Verrocchio 1466. Verrocchio was at this time the most gifted and manifoldest artist in Florence. He was a sculptor, painter, goldsmith, bronze caster and more. There is no doubt that Verrocchio had much influence on Leonardo. Verrocchio was fascinated by the drawings of the young Leonardo and so he gave him a place in his workshop. Leonardo worked at the workshop of Verrocchio with some other famous artists like Botticelli, Perugino and Lorenzo di Credi.
This picture from Lorenzo di Credi shows Andrea del Verrocchio. Leonardo started his apprenticeship with the mixing of colors and then he painted simple parts of paintings. There are no works of Leonardo known between 1466 and 1472, but Leonardo taught himself to paint in oils at this time. This art practice was developed by dutch artists.
The picture shows Florence at the time of Leonardo. In June 1472 Leonardo was listed in the red book of painters from Florence (Campagnia de Pittori). With the membership in the painters guild of Florence ended the apprenticeship of Leonardo. The picture shows a cut of this book where Leonardo is listed with his native name Lionardo.
Leonardo didn't leave the workshop of Verrocchio at the end of his apprenticeship.

Gr. 4-9. Here is a visual, informative book that is also a bargain. In 32 short pages, young people are introduced to one of the world's true geniuses; given examples of his art, his inventive vision, and his well-known attention to scientific detail; offered suggestions for their own artistic projects; and exposed to a brief history of the time. Da Vinci's techniques are discussed and illustrated, and both his successes ( The Mona Lisa ) and his failures ( The Last Supper ) are covered. Although much of the explanation of artistic technique is sketchy (e.g., readers will not really understand sfumato without some previous knowledge of the effect), some of the close-ups of the paintings are dark and muddy, and the artist da Vinci is featured far more prominently than the scientist/inventor da Vinci, this resource is still a tantalizing introduction, one that will encourage young readers to further explore the great artist and all facets of his work. Frances Bradburn
    Synopsis
These art appreciation books have about 50 full-color illustrations eachmany of them faithful reproductions of the artists' paintings. A brief biography accompanied an explanation of each artist's accomplishments.
