    Leonardo da Vinci
Italian painter, engineer, musician, and scientist. The most versatile genius of the Renaissance, Leonardo filled notebooks with engineering and scientific observations that were in some cases centuries ahead of their time . As a painter Leonardo is best known for The Last Supper (c. 1495) and Mona Lisa (c. 1503).
Leonardo da Vinci understood that Man [*Canon of Man] was intended in the proportion of Phi and indeed much of the natural world was Phi based. In the anatomy of Man, the spinal vertebrae are relative to each other in the Phi ratio. The Nautilus shell spirals in the Phi ratio. Plants and trees grow in the Phi ratio. The Earth and Moon have this same relationship. The sunflower is a wonderful example of the spiraling effect of Phi. Look at a pine cone and find the same relationship of Phi...in two directions at the same time.
Leonardo da Vinci's artwork represented a radical change in implied perspective and, indeed, the raison d'etre of art itself. He caused as much outrage among established classical artists as delight in the crop of Renaissance artists he inspired. His overt sensualism, coded anti-religion, and dabbles in the "forbidden" field of natural philosophy (the precursor to experimental science) nearly got him burned alive.

Early Life and Work: Vinci and Florence
Leonardo was the illegitimate son of a Florentine notary and a peasant woman. Presumably he passed his childhood with his father's family in Vinci, where he developed an enduring interest in nature. Early sources describe his beauty, charm of manner, and precocious display of artistic talent. In 1466 Leonardo moved to Florence, where he entered the workshop of Verrocchio and came into contact with such artists as

"How painting surpasses all human works by reason of the subtle possibilities which it contains." "No one should ever imitate the style of another because he will be called a nephew and not a child of nature with regard to art." "Be eager to lend a patient ear to the opinions of others and think long and hard whether whoever finds fault has reason or not to censure you. And if the answer is yes, correct the fault. If no, give the impression that you have not heard him, or if he is a man whom you respect, explain to him why he is mistaken."

    Leonardo da Vinci
Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) born out of wedlock in the region of Vinci (Italy). Despite his lowly birth, his father took him and his mother into his own house, where Leonardo was treated as a legitimate son and giving an education. At age 15, his father apprenticed him to Andrea del Verrocchio, a painter and sculptor in Florence. Verrocchio's studio was involved not only in painting and sculpture, but in bronze casting and architectural projects as well. Leonardo was accepted into the Florentine painter's guild in 1472, but stayed in the Verrocchio studio for five more years. It is said that Leonardo was once assigned to paint an angel in a painting Verrochio was working on (The Baptism of Christ). After Verrochio saw Leonardo's handling of light and shadow (angel on far left), he laid down his brushes and never painted again. Leonardo's biggest contribution to painting was his method of painting light. In 1482, Leonardo left Florence for Milan where he worked as an artist for the Duke of Milan, as well as consulting on architectural and military engineering projects. He spent 17 happy, productive years in the court of the duke, though he finished only 6 paintings in those years. His biggest disappointment was the interruption of a project that many called impossible: the casting of of a 16' high statue of Francisco Sforza on horseback. Leonardo was obsessed with this project for over 12 years, but the project was called off due to the unstable political climate in the area. Anticipating war, the bronze was ordered to be used for cannon balls instead of the sculpture.

The illegitimate son of a 25-year-old notary, Ser Piero, and a peasant girl, Caterina, Leonardo was born on April 15, 1452, in Vinci, Italy, just outside Florence. His father took custody of the little fellow shortly after his birth, while his mother married someone else and moved to a neighboring town. They kept on having kids, although not with each other, and they eventually supplied him with a total of 17 half sisters and brothers.. Growing up in his father's Vinci home, Leonardo had access to scholarly texts owned by family and friends. He was also exposed to Vinci's longstanding painting tradition, and when he was about 15 his father apprenticed him to the renowned workshop of Andrea del Verrochio in Florence. Even as an apprentice, Leonardo demonstrated his colossal talent. Indeed, his genius seems to have seeped into a number of pieces produced by the Verrocchio's workshop from the period 1470 to 1475. For example, one of Leonardo's first big breaks was to paint an angel in Verrochio's "Baptism of Christ," and Leonardo was so much better than his master's that Verrochio allegedly resolved never to paint again. Leonardo stayed in the Verrocchio workshop until 1477 when he set up a shingle for himself. In search of new challenges and the big bucks, he entered the service of the Duke of Milan in 1482, abandoning his first commission in Florence, "The Adoration of the Magi". He spent 17 years in Milan, leaving only after Duke Ludovico Sforza's fall from power in 1499. It was during these years that Leonardo hit his stride, reaching new heights of scientific and artistic achievement.
