HENRI MATISSE BIOGRAPHY
Henri Matisse
French

Self Portrait “To find joy in the sky, the trees, the flowers… There are always flowers for those who want to see them.”
- Matisse Henri Matisse was born December 31, 1869 in northern France. As a young man, he went to Paris to study law, graduated, and in 1889 returned home to work as a clerk in a law office. It was at this time that he had an acute attack of appendicitis, requiring surgery and a long convalescence. His mother gave him a paint box, and at the age of 21, Matisse discovered painting. He returned to work, and every morning before work, he attended drawing classes; at lunch time he would paint for an hour or so, and then return to work. After work he would paint till night fell. It was his life. In 1891 set off for Paris. Despite that one of his first teachers told Matisse that he would never learn to draw, he worked hard and was sponsored as a candidate for the school for fine arts. He failed the entrance exam and enrolled instead in an evening school. He later joined the studio of symbolist/Mannerism painter Gustove Moreau, who encouraged the young Matisse “to look inward.” Matissse began his journey of studies which ultimately lead him to merge his love of the work of the old masters, his weakness for ornament, and his love of line, shape and color.

Bio: On December 31, 1869, Henri Emile Matisse entered into a world and a family which had many plans for him. Matisse spent his childhood and school days in Bohain France and later in Ste. Quentin, where he studied Latin and Greek until the year 1887. The path chosen by Matisse's parents for him, was one that led to a career in one of the professions and so, the young man was sent to Paris to study law. Somewhat of a "blessing in disguise", Matisse fell ill with appendicitis in the year 1890. During his long convalescence from the illness, his mother tried to amuse him with a box of paints, a set of brushes and a how-to-paint book. These art supplies made Matisse feel free for the first time in his life. In 1891, much against the wishes of his father, a fully recovered Matisse returned to Paris - this time - to study art.

Matisse, Henri , 1869-1954, French painter, sculptor, and lithographer. Along with Picasso, Matisse is considered one of the two foremost artists of the modern period. His contribution to 20th-century art is inestimably great.
Matisse began to study law and, during an illness in 1890, took up painting, thereafter forsaking law entirely. He studied first with the academician Bouguereau and then with Gustave Moreau, in whose studio he met many painters who would soon attain prominence with him in the fauvist movement. Matisse's earliest work was exceptionally mature. He explored impressionism (e.g., La Desserte, 1897; Niarchos Coll., Athens) and, coming into contact with the theories of Paul Signac, drew upon neoimpressionist styles as in Luxe, calme et volupté (c. 1905; private coll.). To learn aspects of composition he made variations on the works of the old masters in the Louvre, a practice he continued for many years (e.g., Variation on a Still-life by de Heem, c. 1915; S. A. Marx Coll., Chicago).
Matisse began exhibiting in 1896 and at first was unsuccessful. In 1905 at Collioure, a Mediterranean village, he began using pure primary color as a significant structural element. His portrait of Mme Matisse, known as The Green Line (1905; State Mus., Copenhagen), exemplifies this abstract, intellectual use of color. In 1905 he exhibited at the Salon d'automne with the group of artists called fauves [Fr.,=wild beasts], so named for their remarkable, exuberant use of color. Matisse became a leader of fauvism, delighting in vivid color for its sensual and decorative value.

    MATISSE
    Henri Matisse
Henri Matisse was born in December of 1869 in Le Cateau, France. He began painting during a convalescence from an operation, and in 1891 moved to Paris to study art. Matisse became an accomplished painter, sculptor and graphic designer, and one of the most influential artists of the 1900s.
He was the leader of the Fauves, a group of artists whose style emphasized intense color and vigorous brushstrokes. He believed the arrangement of colors was as important as a painting's subject matter to communicate meaning. He avoided detail, instead using bright color and strong lines to create a sense of movement. In 1905, works by Matisse and other Fauve painters were exhibited together. The bold forms and bright colors of these paintings shocked the Paris art world.
Matisse's work reflects a number of influences: the decorative quality of Near Eastern art, the stylized forms of the masks and sculpture of African, the bright colors of the French impressionists, and the simplified forms of French artist Paul Cezanne and the cubists.

    http://www.johnny.moped.btinternet.co.uk/artisdead/modernartists/matisse/artisde
Henri Matisse One of this century’s most celebrated artists is certainly Henri Matisse. Henri Matisse embodied a style and personality that has become nearly synonymous with words like bright and radiant. For over 60 years, Matisse created artwork that would become appreciated and admired in museums and collections throughout the world. He is considered one of this centuries greatest art masters, like Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh and Pablo Picasso. He began his journey into art with a wild and colourful art movement called Fauvism. After this, his life and legacy as an artist would change the direction of modern art.
    'Dance' (First Version)
Childhood Henri Matisse was born on 31 December 1869 in Picardy, France. Unlike so many great art masters, Matisse did not begin painting as a young prodigious artist. At first, Matisse’s father had intended for his son to become a lawyer. His sensitive health throughout childhood made it impossible for Matisse to consider an industrial career. Both of his parents influenced Matisse’s life greatly. He acquired artistic taste from his mother, being herself somewhat of an artist who often spent much of her time working on ceramics to decorate their home. Her talented artistic ability and her support of his art, influenced Henri Matisse in his decisions to pursue art as a career. His father on the other hand was more of the average working class. He was a local grain merchant. Matisse's father perhaps played a less influential role, but never-the less a significant one. He was stricter and more disciplinary than anything, but for the most part he also supported his son during times of financial and emotional hardship.
