What draws crowds to the Mona Lisa? Why do Vermeer's paintings still puzzle us today? Dynamic art historian Tim Marlow tackles these and other mysteries in an illuminating series on great artists of the western world. Marlow visits places made famous by Raphael, Rembrandt and Titian. He charts their careers from obscurity to eminence—or in the case of Van Gogh, to self-destruction. Viewers will discover what it is that makes a painting or an artist "great", and how the techniques and innovations of these masters have driven art into the 21st century. DATE TIME EPISODE DESCRIPTION FOR MAR / APR Mar 11 Bruegel (1525/30-1569) Very little is known of the life of Pieter Bruegel, whose enigmatic, humorous, sometimes grotesque paintings remain among the most distinctive examples of Netherlandish art. Mar 18 El Greco (1541-1614) The paintings of the artist El Greco are among the most distinctive works of the early modern period. Though criticized by many, El Greco's dramatic style paved the way for the Baroque, and later contributed to the development of Expressionism. Mar 25 Rubens (1577-1640) Peter Paul Rubens was the most celebrated painter of the early 17th century and one of the most prolific in history. A highly versatile artist, Rubens was equally at home painting altarpieces, historical and mythological scenes, portraits, and landscapes. He is perhaps best known for the voluptuous female nudes in his large-scale mythological allegories.

document.write(''); Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum WebMuseum: Michelangelo Michelangelo Buonarroti It’s a Michelangelo! After a visiting scholar uncovered buried treasure at the cooper-hewitt, the verification process began It’s a tale of unexpected riches that trumps any discovery revealed on TV’s Antiques Roadshow : in April, a renowned British scholar unearthed an unsigned drawing by the Italian master painter, sculptor and architect Michelangelo Buonarroti, estimated to be worth $10 million to $12 million. A visiting scholar, Sir Timothy Clifford, director of the National Galleries of Scotland, uncovered the treasure in the collection of the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York City. Only 400 or so drawings by Michelangelo (1475-1564) are known to exist; fewer than a dozen of these are held by museums in the United States. "I am a lucky man who was in the right place in the right time," says Sir Timothy, recalling the moment he first spied the drawing as he rummaged around in a Cooper-Hewitt storeroom, sifting through the contents of a box of sketches by unknown Italian artists. "Did the Michelangelo jump out at me? Of course it did. I’m used to whizzing through boxes of objects, and I don’t stop until I see something with a wonderful quality to it. The piece from Cooper-Hewitt has that quality." Sir Timothy arrived in Manhattan this past spring, at the invitation of Paul Warwick Thompson, the Cooper-Hewitt’s director, to spend a monthlong sabbatical viewing the museum’s sizable holdings in Italian drawings and prints. The nation’s only museum devoted exclusively to historic and contemporary design, the Cooper-Hewitt contains more than 250,000 objects, dating from the Han dynasty to the present, and is among the world’s largest design repositories.

Michelangelo Buonarroti BACK
Florentine sculptor, painter, poet and architect. Michelangelo was born at Caprese where his father was the chief Florentine official. He was trained in Florence, first in the technique of fresco painting by D. Ghirlandaio; then under the patronage of Lorenzo the Magnificent, in the Medici school. Here he became a sculptor. Here too, his mind was formed by the companionship of the Neo-platonic philosophers, artists, poets and men of letters Lorenzo had drawn to his household. Michelangelo's own genius was recognized and encouraged from the beginning. Michelangelo carved the large marble David for the city of Florence along with other works of this period are the Bruges Madonna, the painting of the Holy Family, and the large cartoon or design for a fresco, The Battle of Cascina, done in competition with Leonardo da Vinci. This important work was destroyed, but not before the studies of the nude in violent action had influenced many artists in a way that led ultimately to the style of Mannerism. In 1508, Michelangelo was assigned the job of decorating the whole of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican with frescoes. This enormous undertaking took him over 4 years, working virtually single-handed. He was recalled to Rome in 1534 to paint his 2nd great fresco, The Last Judgement, which covers the whole area of the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel. MICHELANGELO (Part One). an essay on michelangelo
Posted by simar on September 08, 1999 at 07:58:24: Michelangelo was one of the best known artists in the 16th century. He lived during 1475 to 1564 and was one of the most famous artists in history. The works of Michelangelo cover the sculptures he made, the beautiful paintings he drew, and the occasional tombs he architecture. The great works of Michelangelo like the paintings at the Satine Chapel and the statue of David can still be seen and admired. Though the world today sees only the artist side of the last giant of the renaissance period, the sad part of the story is the artist's personal life. The following draft deals with the works and life of Michelangelo and the effects of society on him as well as what made him draw or make these vastly popularised pieces of art. On the 18th of October 1564, the last giant of the renaissance period departed from the earth. During his life Michelangelo played different roles of being one of the best sculpturist, a highly successful painter, a good architect and an occasional poet. His life has been the one full of arts. His desire to create things out of stone made him carve out pieces till the end of his life. If it hadn't been a lonely and sad personal life for him, his life could easily be stated as the complete life of all. In the end, Michelangelo will always be remembered for the great works he left for us to see and admire.

by Anthony Parente The Pieta , which depicts the Virgin Mary holding the body of her son Jesus Christ after his death, has been created in many different forms by various painters and sculpture. Of all the great paintings and sculptures on the Pieta the one by Michelangelo stands out from all the rest. Michelangelo was relatively unknown to the world as an artist. He was only in his early twenties when he was commissioned in 1498 to do a life size sculpture of the Virgin Mary holding her son in her arms. It would be the first of four that he would create and the only one he completely finished. It was to be unveiled in St. Peter's Basilica for the Jubilee of 1500. In less than two years Michelangelo carved from a single slab of marble, the most magnificent sculpture ever created. His interpretation of the Pieta was far different than ones created previously by other artists. Michelangelo decided to create a youthful, serene and celestial Virgin Mary instead of a broken hearted and somewhat older woman.

About the Renaissance Artists Before the Renaissance, artists were seen as lowly craftsmen who worked with their hands. These five Renaissance masters helped transform the status of artists from menial laborers to creative geniuses, equal in importance to philosophers, musicians and poets. Artists emerged as highly regarded and honored individuals. Fra Angelico
c. 1400 - 1455 Fra Angelico was born near Florence and named Guido di Piero. When he became a Dominican friar in his early twenties, he took the name Fra Giovanni, meaning Brother John. By then, he was already an accomplished artist. At his friary, he created a workshop for the production of paintings on every scale, from miniatures to ornate altarpieces. It is said Fra Angelico left his works just as he first painted them, never going back to retouch or repaint, because he believed his brushstrokes were guided by God. After he died, people called him Fra Angelico because both his life and his art were so angelic. Sandro Botticelli Botticelli's real name was Sandro Filipepi. Botticelli, which means "little barrels," was a nickname given to his rotund older brother that later spread to the whole family. Botticelli's father, a lowly tanner, worked hard to give his children a better chance in life. Young Sandro joined the workshop of Fra Filippo Lippi, a famous painter who had scandalized Florence by leaving his life as a monk to marry a former nun. Later, Botticelli was drawn to the teaching of Savonarola, a monk who accused Florentines of living immorally and exhorted them to burn their books, paintings and other luxuries in what he called a "bonfire of the vanities." Botticelli may have thought his own paintings were not pious enough. First his art became more religious, then he gave it up altogether, and lived out his last years in a monastery.

The Archangel Michael ranks as the greatest of all angels whether in Jewish, Christian or Islamic writings. He is the Chief of the Order of Virtues, Chief of Archangels, and the Angel of Repentance, Righteousness, Mercy, and Sanctification. Here, Michael holding in his hand the Scales of Justiceis represented as the Angel of the Final Reckoning and the Weigher of Souls. Hercules and Cacus This 16th century sculpture of the legendary hero Hercules by Baccio Bandinelli was displayed in the town center of Florence, Piazza della Signoria, as one in a series of mythical scenes which celebrated the city’s major historical events. His heroism was viewed as analogous to the dignity and pride of Florentines during their age of dominance in the Renaissance. Made from bonded carrara marble, black marble base, imported from Italy, 7"W x 6"D x 19"H.
