Artist - Monet Monet, Claude-Oscar (1840-1926) Portrait by Carolus-Duran One of the world’s most famous landscape artists, Monet was a leading member of the Impressionist group. He rejected the conventions of high finish and tonal colour to complete pictures out of doors and directly in front of the subject. His rapid technique, luminous palette and attempts to capture fleeting weather conditions were at first condemned by critics. Later however, Monet was hailed as a master in the painterly tradition of French art. Read the BBCi Arts profile. Thames below Westminster , c.1871 Haystacks, Snow Effect Monet: did you know? "Merely think, here is a little square of blue, here an oblong of pink, here a streak of yellow, and paint it just as it looks to you," advised Claude Monet. He was a successful caricaturist in his native Le Havre, but after studying plein-air landscape painting, he moved to Paris in 1859. He soon met future Impressionists Camille Pissarro and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Renoir and Monet began painting outdoors together in the late 1860s, laying the foundations of Impressionism. In 1874, with Pissarro and Edgar Degas, Monet helped organize the Société Anonyme des Artistes, Peintres, Sculpteurs, Graveurs, etc., the formal name of the Impressionists' group. During the 1870s Monet developed his technique for rendering atmospheric outdoor light, using broken, rhythmic brushwork. He received little but abuse from public and critics alike, who complained that the paintings were formless, unfinished, and ugly. He and his family endured abject poverty. By the 1880s, however, his paintings started selling; Pissarro accused him of commercialism, and younger painters called him passé, for he remained loyal to the Impressionists' early goal of capturing the transitory effects of nature through direct observation. In 1890 he began creating paintings in series, depicting the same subject under various conditions and at different times of the day. His late pictures, made when he was half-blind, are shimmering pools of color almost totally devoid of form.

1840–1926, French landscape painter, b. Paris. Monet was a founder of impressionism . He adhered to its principles throughout his long career and is considered the most consistently representative painter of the school as well as one of the foremost painters of landscape in the history of art.
As a youth in Le Havre, Monet was encouraged by the marine painter Boudin to paint in the open air, a practice he never forsook. After two years (1860–62) with the army in Algeria, he went to Paris, over parental objections, to study painting. In Paris, Monet formed lasting friendships with the artists who would become the major impressionists, including Pissarro Cézanne Renoir Sisley , and Bazille. He and several of his friends painted for a time out-of-doors in the Barbizon district. Monet soon began to concern himself with his lifelong objective: portraying the variations of light and atmosphere brought on by changes of hour and season. Rather than copy in the Louvre, the traditional

Claude Monet Impressionist artist
Monet was born on November 14, 1840, in Paris, but he spent most of his childhood in Le Havre. There, in his teens, he showed a talent for drawing caricatures, and in about 1858 he met the landscape painter Eugène Boudin, who encouraged him to paint out of doors rather than in the studio. In 1859, Monet committed himself to a career as an artist, and moved to Paris. During the 1860s he was associated with Édouard Manet, and with other aspiring French painters destined to form the Impressionist school—notably Camille Pissarro, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, Berthe Morisot Édouard Manet and Edgar Degas
Working in the open air, Monet painted simple landscapes and scenes of contemporary middle-class society, and he began to have some success at official exhibitions. As his style developed, however, Monet violated one traditional artistic convention after another in the interest of direct artistic expression. His experiments in rendering outdoor sunlight with a direct, sketch-like application of bright colour became more and more daring, and he appeared deliberately to turn away from the possibility of a successful career as a conventional painter enjoying the support of the art establishment.

Claude Monet
was born November 14, 1840 in Paris, France. Monet was the leader of a group of French artists called the "Impressionists," which included such painters as Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Camille Pissarro. Monet's family moved to the port town of Le Havre in 1845. He took his early art lessons from the painter, Eugene Boudin. Boudin, who worked up sketches out-of doors, encouraged Monet to do the same. "Suddenly the veil was torn away.... My destiny as a painter opened out to me," he later said. For the next 60+ years Monet explored the effects of light on outdoor scenes. He was the first artist to let his initial impressions stand as completed works, rather than as "notes" done in preparation for work in the studio. Monet moved to Paris in 1859, where he met and befriended Pissarro and Edouard Manet . He married in 1870, and in 1871 settled in Argenteuil. He fixed up a boat with an easel and painted his way up and down the Seine River, capturing his impressions of the interplay of light, water and atmosphere. In 1874 Monet and a group of painters including Pissarro and Renoir banded together to form a society of artists. They gave a public exhibition of their work at the studio of a Paris photographer. Monet exhibited a painting called "Impression: Sunrise." His painting gave the group its name, coined in derision by critic Louis Leroy referring to the entire exhibition as "Impressionistic." Despite the financial failure of this first exhibit, the Impressionist continued to exhibit together until 1886. Monet slowly achieved recognition in the years after the Impressionists disbanded. In 1883, he settled in Giverny, France and continued to paint, and explore his fascination with light until his death on December 5, 1926.

the artist at a glance
Artist Claude Monet is best known for his remarkable accomplishments as an Impressionist painter. In his works, Monet focused on capturing the fleeting and ephemeral effects of light on objects. And the result is spectacular - today, Monet is widely admired, his paintings appreciated for their subtle colors and innovative painterly technique. Claude Monet was born in 1840 in Paris, France. He began his career as an artist just after the middle of the Nineteenth century, at a time when the French art world was dominated by conservative and traditional painters. Monet rejected the slick Academic style and subject matter so admired by the art connoisseurs of the day, and instead chose to depict scenes from nature and contemporary life. A field of poppies. Haystacks. A water lily pond. The façade of Rouen Cathedral. These were the images that inspired Monet, and he painted them almost obsessively. And whether he painted landscapes, boats on the water, or flowers, his paintings reveal that Monet was a master of portraying the elusive play of light and shadow in his magnificent works. Viewers can see this artistic mastery in some of Monet's most memorable and famous paintings, such as his images of Water Lilies and Haystacks in the Snow More about the art and life of Claude Monet

Monet paints thick with strange combination of colour in later life probably because his eyesight was failing. He naturally was having difficultly coming to terms with blindness, every artist nightmare. he had a accurate memory for colour and would get his stepdaughter to help with the colour before applying it to the canvas. Monet has crystallized a sound knowledge of the theories of colour perception, intentionally using warm nest to cool and yellow next to blue to vitalized his painting

Claude Monet Claude Monet is one of modern arts most appreciated artists. His name is always highly regarded in any discussion about the Impressionist movement. His work has been more exploited through posters, postcards and museums than any other artist. People of all ages have enjoyed Monet’s renditions of landscape, city life and, of course, his later works of the water lilies. Countless artists have come after Claude Monet’s death in 1926, but none have been able to replace the value of one of arts most celebrated figures.
'Haystacks; Morning Effect'
Childhood Claude Oscar Monet was born on 14 November 1840 in Paris. Five years after Monet’s birth, his father (Adolphe Monet) moved the family to a seaport near the Normandy Coast called Le Havre. Monet described later in life that in his childhood years he always had an interest in the ocean and the landscapes he saw in Le Havre. As an adolescent, Monet enjoyed painting funny and amusing caricatures of his teachers and classmates, and Monet was able to sell his collection for 2000 francs. After this, his father and aunt probably realised that Monet had enough talent to make a living at painting. Unlike many fathers who had aspiring artists for sons, Monet’s father did not interfere with his efforts to become an artist, although it’s probably true that he wanted his son to finish school even more. Early in his life, Monet seemed destined to seek inspiration from other artists and teachers. Through his schooling in the arts, he met other famous names like Renoir and Manet. By his 20s, Monet had no financial or social support from any of his family members. Throughout his younger years, Monet had to borrow money from Bazille in order to have money for daily necessities. And, at least during his younger years, outside financial support was always a constant.
