The DISTRICT OF MORADABAD lies east of the Ganges and west of the native state of Rampur. Area, 2285 sq. m. It lies within the great Gangetic plain, and is demarcated into three subdivisions by the rivers Ramganga and Sot. The eastern tract consists of a submontane country, with an elevation slightly greater than the plain below, and is traversed by numerous streams descending from the Himalayas. The central portion consists of a level central plain descending at each end into the valleys of the Ramganga and Sot. The western section has a gentle slope towards the Ganges, with a rapid dip into the lowlands a few miles - from the bank of the great river. In addition to Moradabad the principal towns are Amroha (q.v.), Sambhal (3g,~j5) and Chaudansi (25,711). BIBLIOGRAPHY.—The Palmerin of England, by W. E. Purser (Dublin, 1904), contains an exhaustive study of the romance and t~e controversy concerning its authorship, with a sketch of the plot. The existing Portuguese editions bear the dates 1567, 1592, 1786 and 1852, while translations exist in Spanish, Italian and French. An English version from the French by A. Munday was first published in 1609. In 1807 Robert Southey issued in 4 vols. 4t0 an incomplete translation from the Portuguese which is really a revision of Munday. In addition Moracs wrote some Dialogues, which were published at Evora in 1624 and are incorporated in the last two editions of PaJ mel rim de Inglaterra. (E. PR.) His sketches and paintings so vividly embodied the grandeur of Yellowstone that Congress was induced to act. In 1872 Yellowstone was dedicated as our First National Park, thereby protecting it forever from settlement and development "For the Benefit and Enjoyment of the People". Considered by many to be the "Father of Yellowstone", Thomas Moran's spectacular paintings opened our eyes to an unknown world and helped to preserve a national treasure, the "Crown Jewel" of our National Parks. Thomas Moran (1837-1926)
Though born in England, Thomas Moran became one of America's greatest landscape artists. At age 15, he found work in an engraver's shop, where his talent first attracted attention. Moran was inspired by dramatic colors and light effects of English artist J.M.W. Turner's paintings, and would later be called "the American Turner." In 1871, Moran traveled westward with the U.S. Geological Survey of the Territories. He made many sketches of the Western landscape, especially the fantastic scenes of Yellowstone. These images, along with photographs by William Henry Jackson, helped persuade Congress to create America's first national park. Congress also purchased two of Moran's panoramic paintings to hang in the Capitol. Moran worked hard at his art, averaging 13 hours a day, usually on paintings of Western landscapes. He felt strongly that American artists should paint American landscapes. "There is little need," he said, "of American landscape painters going abroad in search of the grand, the sublime, and the beautiful. There is no phase of landscape in which we are not richer, more varied and interesting than any country in the world." Learn more about Moran and his paintings in our Go West, Young Artist

73. Thomas Moran
moran felt a strong sense of obligation that American artists should paint theirown country. thomas moran would died at the age of 90, on August 25, 1926.
http://ellensplace.net/moran4.html
In August of 1874, Moran joined the Hayden survey team in Denver, Colorado to explore a region that few had seen. The Mountain of the Holy Cross, which lay in an especially rugged range, had remained largely unknown because of being obscured by the Notch Mountains to the East, and was inaccessible to most travelers. Not until the late 1860's was there any written reports of this religious symbol carved by nature into stone. The upright fissure reached approximately 1,100 feet, with arms at least 200 feet long. Through the years, part of the right arm of the cross has eroded the clarity of the image. Moran felt a strong sense of obligation that American artists should paint their own country. He said that "there was little need of American landscape painters going abroad in search of the grand, the sublime, and the beautiful". "There is no phase of landscape in which we are not richer, more varied and interesting than any country in the world." The railroad help transform the West from a little known, inaccessible, and sometimes feared region, to a place where thousands of settlers and tourist sought to explore and visit. Through extensive publicity campaigns the railroads published many pamphlets, posters, and booklets encouraging Americans to see this most remarkable part of America. Moran was to travel by rail as a guest of the railroads to visually record the West many times in the years ahead. Although Moran is known by a few enormous canvases depicting spectacular scenes from the West, there are over 1,500 oils, 800 watercolors, and countless drawings from Lake Superior, Tetons, Yosemite, Sierras, Old Mexico, Europe, and the region around East Hampton, Long Island, where he and Mollie spent many summers.

74. Moran Thomas
Born in the city of Bolton, Lancashire, England on 12 January 1837, thomas Moranwas destined to become one of America's greatest landscape artists.
http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/M/Moran/1.html
Moran, Thomas Born in the city of Bolton, Lancashire, England on 12 January 1837, Thomas Moran was destined to become one of America's greatest landscape artists. He and his family sailed from Liverpool, England in April 1844 to America. Thomas Moran Sr., a weaver by trade, settled the family in Philadelphia...one of the textile centers of the country.
Thomas showed an early interest in art, and at the age of 15 he sought employment in an engraver's shop...the chosen occupation of young aspiring artist of that day. Never really mastering the engravers trade, his drawings drew the attention of his employer. Noting the quality of his work, he was kept busy sketching designs on the engraver's blocks for others to engrave. Moran began to spend his spare time doing watercolors and drawing, which he easily sold for $10 to $15 apiece.
In 1856, Tom and his brother Edward, who was also an aspiring painter, rented a studio in Philadelphia. There, they could study and apply their craft full time. Thomas was to show a growing interest in the works of H.M.W. Turner (1775-1851), an English painter of note. His early works reflected much of the style of Turner. This can be seen in the paintings below...(Turner, left...Moran, right)
Thomas Morans' first extended trip in search of the scenic wonders was to the Lake Superior region in 1860..."to the shores of Gitchee Gumee". No artist at that time had visited this area.

"The turning point in Moran's career came in 1871, when Dr. Ferdinand Hayden, director of the United States Geological Survey, invited him to join an expedition into the Yellowstone area of Wyoming. At that time Yellowstone was terra incognita to the white man. It was known, for its hot mud lakes, geysers, and constant geothermal activity, as "the place where Hell bubbled up," but apart from a few mountain men and trappers, the only white man to describe it had been John Coulter, a member of Lewis and Clark's expedition, who strayed into it in 1807. The expedition was backed by the U.S. government, and Moran's role was funded partly by the directors of the Northern Pacific Railroad - who reasoned, shrewdly, that the circulation of Moran's images of Yellowstone, and the publicity they got, might help create a new tourist destination and thus a profitable new railroad line.
"Hayden remembered Moran saying "with a sort of regretful enthusiasm, that these beautiful tints were beyond the reach of human art." What the sketchbook could not encompass, however, memory and imagination perhaps could, and as soon as he got back to New York, Moran ordered an eight- by-fourteen-foot canvas and flung himself into work on the climactic panorama of America's years of Western expansion: The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.
