Pablo Picasso Pablo Picasso looms over the era of Modern Art unlike any other artist. His work and influence have become as well-known in society as people like John F. Kennedy or the Beatles. His work and influence was so powerful that no discussion of Modern Art can possibly be considered without mentioning the involvement of Pablo Picasso. He was more than just a painter and an artist; he was a genius and a prodigy. Throughout his lifetime, Picasso produced an immeasurable amount of original artwork, from painting to sculpture and ceramics. To this day, his life continues to baffle people and, more than ever, his legacy continues in museums and private collections throughout the world.
'Les Demoiselles d’Avignon'
Childhood Pablo Ruiz Picasso was born in Malaga, Spain, shortly before midnight on 25 October 1881. His father, Don Jose Ruiz Blasco was thirty-one, and his mother Dona Maria Picasso y Lopez was twenty-six. According to Spanish tradition, Pablo was given the last names of his father, Ruiz, and his mother Picasso. Both of his parents were from Spain. His father was an art teacher. As a child, Picasso was always more interested in painting than learning. In his earliest school days, many of Picasso’s teachers had learned not to put too much effort into reaching young Picasso. From the beginning, Picasso displayed the bohemian personality. He disliked receiving instruction. His father often had to compromise with Pablo. They made such deals that allowed for Picasso to take his pigeons with him to school if he would pay attention to the teacher. But rather than learn, Picasso painted the pigeons he admired.

Biography
Pablo Picasso was probably the most famous artist of the twentieth century. During his artistic career, which lasted more than 75 years, he created thousands of works, not only paintings but also sculptures, prints, and ceramics, using all kinds of materials. He almost single-handedly created modern art. He changed art more profoundly than any other artist of this century.
First famous for his pioneering role in Cubism, Picasso continued to develop his art with a pace and vitality comparable to the accelerated technological and cultural changes of the twentieth century. Each change embodied a radical new idea, and it might be said that Picasso lived several artistic lifetimes.
Picasso was born on October 25, 1881, in Malaga, Spain, son of an artist, Jose Ruiz, and Maria Picasso. Rather than adopt the common name Ruiz, the young Picasso took the rarer name of his mother. An artistic prodigy, Picasso, at the age of 14, completed the one-month qualifying examination of the Academy of Fine Arts in Barcelona in one day. From there he went to the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid, returning in 1900 to Barcelona, where he frequented the city's famous cabaret of intellectuals and artists, Els Quatre Gats.
The years of 1901 to 1904, known as the "blue period" because of the blue tonality of Picasso's paintings were a time of frequent changes of residence between Barcelona and Paris. During this period, he would spend his days in Paris studying the masterworks at the Louvre and his nights enjoying the company of fellow artists at cabarets like the Lapin Agile.

fauvism, and other art forms. Subjects in cubist artwork are first broken up, analyzed, and finally reassembled in an abstract way. Analytical cubism reduces subject matter to basic shapes and then reassembles the two-dimensional shapes into a seemingly three-dimensional representation. Man with a Pipe is put together somewhat like a jigsaw puzzle, but with overlapping as well as interlocking pieces. Portions of an eye, a moustache, and a hand are recognizable in the painting. The oval shape of the canvas itself seems to emphasize the three-dimensional or sculptural qualities of cubism while the subdued brown colors remind the viewer of a dimly lit interior space. Although the cubist movement was short-lived, its influence was strongly felt in the development of twentieth-century painting.

Art And Artists : Pablo Picasso : Cubist art prints
Considered the master of 20th century art, Pablo Picasso burst through conventional boundaries to discover new releases for his prolific talent. His finished artwork numbers in the thousands and includes paintings, drawings, ceramics, sculptures and murals - even costumes and theater sets.
An artistic prodigy at an early age, Pablo Picasso was technically skilled in drawing and painting by age 15 and by late 1906 had begun painting in a revolutionary manner. Inspired by Paul Cézanne, he began to express space in strongly geometric terms. This sculptural sense of space formed the beginnings of Cubism which he started with Georges Braque, and in 1907 he painted the historical Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, considered one of the first true forms of pure Modern art.
Pablo Picasso's personality has been described as genius and destructive animal wrapped into one. He was short, bold and incredibly charming, which was evident in his renowned pursuit of women. His life continues to baffle people, but more than ever his legacy continues in museums and collections throughout the world.

Picasso's list, 1912, of European artists to be included in the Armory Show of 1913. Walt Kuhn Family Papers and Armory Show Records.
Donated by Brenda Kuhn, 1962-1979 It is often the rough draft, the incidental comment, or casual record that reveals the rhythms of an age. Picasso's list of European artists for the 1913 Armory Show is a treasure, not only because it provides Picasso's recommendations for the first international exhibition of modern art in the United States, but for what the scrap of paper conveys about the collaborative efforts of the exhibition's organizers. Walt Kuhn, who played a major role in assembling the show, had limited knowledge of the European avant-garde. He relied on American artists then living abroad - Walter Pach, Jo Davidson, and Alfred Maurer - as well as individuals, such as Picasso, for introductions to contemporary European artists and dealers. With phonetic spelling, Picasso names Marcel Duchamp, whose Nude Descending a Staircase caused an uproar in the press, Fernand Léger, and his countryman Juan Gris, among others. Curiously, he did not include Georges Braque, whose's name was later added in Walt Kuhn's hand. In the end, the Europeans stole the show, overshadowing their American counterparts.
