Last Modified 04/05/2002 12:33:12 PM EST Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) is regarded as the undisputed leader of the Abstract Expressionist movement. In 1945, he married fellow artist Lee Krasner (1908-1984) and moved from New York City to Long Island's East End. With a loan from art dealer Peggy Guggenheim, they purchased a small homestead on one and a quarter acres overlooking Accabonac Creek in The Springs, near East Hampton . Here, in this serene community of farmers and baymen, Pollock created his masterpieces - works whose innovative style and technique stunned the art world and continue to challenge viewers today.

Biography
Jackson Pollock
Artist USA Born 28 Jan 1912
Died 11 Aug 1956
The commanding figure of the Abstract Expressionist movement. In 1929-31 he studied at the Art Students League under Thomas Hart Benton and was influenced not only by Benton's restlessly energetic style, but also by his image as a virile, hard-drinking macho-man (Pollock began treatment for alcoholism in 1937 and in 1939 he started therapy with Jungian psychoanalysists, using his draw-in sessions with them).
During the 1930s, he painted in Benton's Regionalist vein, and he was influenced also by the work of the Mexican muralists and by certain aspects of Surrealism, particularly the use of mythical or totemic figures as archetypes of the unconscious. From 1935-42 he worked for the Federal Art Project and in 1943 he was given a contract by Peggy Guggenheim; his first one-man show was held at her Art of this Century gallery in that year. A characteristic work of this time is 'The She-Wolf' (MOMA, New York, 1943), a semi-abstract picture with vehemently handled paint and ominous imagery recalling the monstrous creatures of Picasso's Guernica period.
In 1945 Pollock married Lee Krasner (1908-84), who was an Abstract Expressionist painter of some distinction, although it was only after her husband's death that she received serious critical recognition. She was also an important source of encouragement and support to Pollock, whose attitude to his work fluctuated from supreme confidence to dismal uncertainty.

Biography On Jackson Pollock
Pollock, Jackson (1912-1956), American abstract painter, who developed a technique for applying paint by pouring or dripping it onto canvases laid on the floor. With this method Pollock produced intricate interlaced webs of paint, as in Black and White (1948, private collection). Rapid and seemingly impulsive execution like Pollock's became a hallmark of abstract expressionism, a movement that emphasized the spontaneous gestures of the artist.
Born in Cody, Wyoming, Pollock moved to New York City in 1930 to study at the Art Students League with American artist Thomas Hart Benton. Pollock's early paintings, realistic scenes of life in America, clearly reflect Benton's influence. As his career progressed, Pollock rejected his teacher's representational subject matter, but retained Benton's emphasis on rhythmic, dynamic composition. In New York, Pollock was also exposed to the work of Mexican mural painters José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Their experimental techniques, large scale, and use of industrial paints had a lasting impact on Pollock's work.
The surrealism movement was another significant influence upon Pollock, whose ideas about the relevance of the unconscious to artistic creativity coincided with his own experience. As part of treatment for alcoholism, Pollock underwent psychoanalysis; his therapists, who followed the teachings of Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung, encouraged him to analyze his drawings for clues to his unconscious mental processes. Surrealist artists had also hoped to tap into the unconscious through automatism, a technique in which the artist's hand wanders across the painting's surface with as little conscious control as possible. In early works such as The She-Wolf (1943, Museum of Modern Art, New York City), Pollock combined surrealist automatism with subject matter that reflects his interests in ancient sculpture, non-Western art, and the work of Spanish artist Pablo Picasso.

FEATURED ARTIST : Jackson Pollock Jackson Pollock was born in Wyoming in 1912. He had five brothers, and his family moved all over the western states when he was growing up. His mother encouraged all her sons to be artists when they were little. Three of Jackson's older brothers became artists, too. When they lived in California and Arizona, Jackson and his brothers would watch the Native Americans perform their ceremonial dances and making sand paintings. Jackson developed a deep respect for Native American culture and would later incorporate into his paintings stuff that he learned from them.
Then he remembered the sand paintings and wondered if he might be able to express his feelings by dripping paint!! He also joined the workshop of a Mexican mural painter named David Siqueiros and they experimented with new ways of painting. Jackson liked it. He began tacking his own canvases to the floor and then he dripped and splattered and swirled paint on the canvases as a way to show his feelings. Soon his paintings looked very different from anything he had ever done before. He was making his own way of painting and it later became known as "Action Painting."
He married his girlfriend, Lee Krasner, in 1945. She was an artist, too. Jackson's art studio was in the barn and Lee's was in a bedroom in the house. Jackson Pollock died in a car accident in 1956 when he was forty-five years old. But his art greatly influenced a new group of artist who flocked to New York, making it a center of the art world.

Jackson Pollock Jackson Pollock is often remembered for his involvement with Abstract Expressionism. He embodied the typical stereotype of the "American Painter", and represented a part of art that was seen as wild and uncontrolled. Until his early and unfortunate death in 1956, Pollock dazzled the public with his dripping paint know as action painting. Today, Pollock's work has become well known, and his legacy is clearly demonstrated by those who appreciate his art.
'The She-Wolf'
Childhood Jackson Pollock was born on 28 January 1912 in Cody, Wyoming. He was one of five boys born to Stella and LeRoy Pollock. Much of Pollock's childhood was spent traveling from city to city, as the Pollock family never settled down in one place for too long. These unstable times in Jackson Pollock's life produced years of loneliness and depression. While beginning to experiment with painting, Pollock looked to his older brother Charles as a role model; Charles was also an artist. But Pollock often dismayed his brother, who tried many times to support him emotionally, because young Jackson Pollock hated most of the work he did. Pollock often placed his paintings against the wall rather than on the wall when he completed them. As a child, Pollock was usually characterised as shy and introspective. He appeared to have no real ability to paint, but he did have vision and passion. Much of his adolescent and young adulthood was spent dreaming about being an artist like his older brother, Charles.

John Haber

Jackson Pollock: A Retrospective
In Jackson Pollock's hands, paint took on the delicacy, power, and variety of a human form. He laid it on with care, in dabs of black and skeins of intense color. He let it run off as he circled a canvas, as if it flowed from the motion of his body. On that enormous scale, it accumulates the debris of an artist's life, from ashes and canvas ends to the sober gray of Long Island sunlight. At once palpable, fluid, and transparent to the light, it gives to an entire museum wall the brightness, odor, and ordinary necessity of fresh house paint. After half a century of pattern painting and parody, Pollock's drip paintings can be seen at last as a lot more than drips, but they remain the most defiantly abstract art ever made. And yet his retrospective begins with the small, clumsy image of a boy's face, his own. Achingly shy, he has the dark rings around his eyes of a battered child. The painting, Pollock's only known self-portrait, could stand for all the weaknesses of his art, right up to the desperately few final years that made him famous. Well past the excuses of student age, he settles for unpromising class work. The portrait's derivative style lies somewhere between Expressionism and Sunday painting. By painting himself years younger, the victim of a father Pollock in fact hardly knew, he combines evasion with a severe case of self-dramatization.
