JACKSON POLLOCK :
A LIFE SIMILAR TO THAT OF JAMES DEAN Jackson Pollock has been considered to be the most influential American painter of the 20th Century after taking part in the emergence of Abstract Expressionism in his country. Born in 1912 in Cody, Wyoming, Pollock had a difficult childhood in Arizona and California before coming to New York in 1930. During a decade his paintings of figures and animals painted with violent tones attracted much attention before reaching the style that brought him celebrity after 1947. Pollock, who took to drinking and sometime behaved like a rebel, developed a new form of painting by dripping paint from a brush or stick above the canvas, weaving interlacing lines, with drops and spatters of colours of intense intricacy. His works produced between 1947 and 1950 heralded the emergence of Abstract Expressionism and enabled American art to be prominent worldwide in the following years. His death in a car crash in 1956 somewhat made him a legendary figure similar to that of the actor James Dean while his work had a deep influence on many artists since then.

Mark Rothko (American, born Russia, 1903-1970). Orange and Yellow, 1956, oil on canvas, 91 x 71" Gift of Seymour H. Knox, 1956 INTRODUCTION This lesson is an exercise in looking and thinking, making comparisons and connections. It relates to elements in all categories of the comprehension strategies of the third-grade language arts program: relate ideas, organize information, synthesize ideas, evaluate ideas, and generate and apply ideas. The family project could relate to the science and math curricula by turning the students' survey results into graphs and charts, followed by an analysis of the compiled data. INFORMATION FOR THE TEACHER Although artists rarely want to be categorized, the label "abstract expressionism" aptly describes their work. The paintings are completely abstract, with no recognizable objects from the real world (another term for completely abstract is NON-OBJECTIVE), and the purpose of their art is to create expression and emotion.

Although artists rarely want to be categorized, the label "abstract expressionism" aptly describes their work. The paintings are completely abstract, with no recognizable objects from the real world (another term for completely abstract is NON-OBJECTIVE), and the purpose of their art is to create expression and emotion. Abstract expressionism can be roughly divided into two general types. Jackson Pollock was representative of "action" or "gesture" painting, in which the artist's process and movements were an important aspect of the end result. Mark Rothko's work is an example of "color-field painting," in which the artist was more concerned with creating an overall field of paint. The two works included in this lesson plan are typical of each artist's work: Pollock created many so-called "drip" paintings, some in black and white and others with color; and most of Rothko's images consist of two or three floating rectangles in various color combinations.

jackson pollock: cia stooge?
by Nick Mamatas (nillo@agoron.com) - July 28, 2002
The fevered drip paintings of Jackson Pollock did more than shatter the primacy of representational art. It did more than kick the easel out from under the frame, transforming painting technique forever. And Jackson Pollock's art did more than take up wall space in the offices of philistine fatcats, it helped win the Cold War. Jackson Pollock and other modern artists were secretly subsidized and promoted by the CIA as an antidote to the iconography of Soviet Realism and as a counter-punch to the body of post-war art, which was radicalizing both artists and viewers. In the 1930s, Pollock and other artists were involved in a variety of government and later, Communist activities. Artists who cut their teeth painting WPA murals for Roosevelt gravitated left-ward, Pollock himself worked with famed radical muralist David Alfaro Siquieros. As his work left representation of any form behind (one critic called a painting a "Melted Picasso"), the US State Department saw the perfect weapon. Since there was no political content, no theme to the work, in fact, there was often nothing at all but the most self-obsessed swirls in Pollock's huge canvases, his art was easily commandeered and made a weapon. Stalin could hug as many children and lead as many peasants to the wheat fields in an evil Norman Rockwell universe as he liked, Pollock's empty confusion spoke to the people of a shattered Europe, the wizards of America's corporate towers and their brainwashed suburban peasants.

Jack the Dripper A quick look at the art of Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) and what he might have been thinking. A Crash Course in Art History Art in a nutshell. Abstract Expressionism was an art movement which began in New York City. After WWII, with images of the Holocaust everywhere they turned, it seemed redundant for socially-aware artists to paint these same images ... a photograph at the time was much more powerful. Therefore, to have no subject matter ... no imagery at all, seemed to be "the thing to do". Artists began to explore color and shape and to paint an entire canvas orange or blue was not an odd thing to do (Color Field Painting). The ideas of existentialism also played a large role in how artists created. Artists began to wonder: "If there is no God, what are the reasons for our being here? Why do we do what we do?" The result was a period of self discovery and there was a sense that one could do and say anything and everything. With no rules, many creative minds could explore ideas freely - hence the splish splash creations of folks like Jackson Pollock - otherwise known as "Jack the Dripper".

Pollock was born in Cody, Wyoming on January 12, 1912, and spent his childhood years in California and Arizona before arriving in New York in 1931. There he studied under rural figurative painter Thomas Hart Benton and the Art Students League. It was not until about 1938 that he began to experiment with abstraction, and until 1946 that he produced his first completely abstract and defining work Eyes in the Heat (1946), as author Bryan Robertson argues. Pollock worked primarily with oil on canvas on easel until he began experimenting with more fluid paint like commercial enamel house paint and aluminium paint. In the ensuing years, he also used thinned oil, impasto, sticks, knives, hardened brushes, basting syringes, pebbles, sand, mesh and in

The first, recorded by a young neighbor in late 1950, queries Pollock about his painting; only two recordings of Pollock's voice are known, so this is especially useful for art historians. The Krasner interview was done by Marc Miller, an art historian and critic, when her one-woman exhibit opened in 1982. Artist's Biography
Born Paul Jackson Pollock on January 28, 1912, in Cody, Wyoming. It is central to many of the myths surrounding Pollock's life that he was born in Wyoming, this somehow connecting him to a romantic vision of cowboys and the frontier. In fact, Pollock's family moved from Wyoming to San Diego, California, when he was just a few months old. Paul Jackson Pollockknown as Paul until he was in high schoolwas the youngest of Stella May McClure and LeRoy Pollock's five sons. During his childhood the poor but close-knit family moved regularly throughout California and Arizona following the demands of LeRoy Pollock's migrant farm work. Stella Pollock, known as a "capable woman who kept the family on its course," loved art and passed this passion on to her brood; all five sons eventually pursued careers in the arts.
