Jackson Pollock's Blue Poles
4 October 2002 - 27 January 2003
  • The 50th anniversary of the creation of Blue Poles and 20th anniversary of the opening of the National Gallery of Australia
The first time Jackson Pollock's Blue Poles has been shown in an exhibition in Australia in the context of a broad range of other works by the artist. Revisits the genius and fragility of Jackson Pollock the man and artist whose work reached, retains and strengthens in iconic status in 20th-century art history.
Claimed by many critics as the 'most influential American painter of the 20th century', Jackson Pollock first became a household name in Australia in 1973 when the Australian National Gallery took possession of his painting Blue Poles Number II , 1952. The controversy that surrounded the purchase prompted a national tour of the painting to introduce it to the Australian public. Since that time Blue Poles has been permanently on view at the National Gallery of Australia, excluding a short sojourn to the major retrospective exhibition Jackson Pollock at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1998.

Pollock Film Disappoints
Looking to films depicting modern artists for inspiration can leave the viewer cold. 'Pollock' is no exception. Despite it's well-delivered acting, the film begs the question of why and how. by Chris Ching April.24th.2001 Movies about artists tend to be bad and " Pollock ," the story of modern art giant Jackson Pollock, unfortunately continues this trend.
The portrait of the artist begins in 1941 with the Uber-alcoholic Pollock struggling for acceptance in the New York art world incredibly jealous of the achievements of others "Fuck Picasso!" He shouts. In these first scenes, Pollock is more of a drunken ghost than a real person unable to deal emotionally with anything. Only when painting does he show focus or discipline.
Nor are we made aware of what compels his wife, Lee Krasner, to endure the emotional oppression of her volatile husband. Rubbing his infidelities in her face and referring to her as a "Jewish cunt."
Oscar-winning
performance is equal to Harris’ despite having to recite some of the clunkiest dialogue in recent memory. After Pollock invents his new style of action painting, she bursts into his studio cheering, "You’ve done it Pollock. You’ve cracked it wide open." Trust me, once you hear it, you’ll be repeating the line for weeks to come in Harden’s New Yawk-ian accent.

75. JACKSON POLLOCK
During the time jackson pollock lived he reaped very little financialreward. But then that's the great tragedy of the artists life.
http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Suite/3105/pollock.htm
JACKSON POLLOCK From the chronology of Jackson Pollock's young life, (1912 through the Great depression) it is obvious that his mother and father went a lot of struggle in Wyoming, Arizona and California , (1912-1929) just trying to keep Jackson and his four older brothers together. That in itself is truly a great story of an American Family under crisis in the first half of the 20th Century - apart from art. His mother took five young sons, Jackson still a baby, across the Arizona desert to a mud hut home outside of Phoenix - in 1912. The year Arizona became a state. That Stella May Pollock, really, she must have been quite a woman! No wonder her son Jackson was one of America's greatest artists..! Jackson was 44 when he was killed in a car crash. There have been a number of books written about him. The old New York art colony was Woodstock, but during Pollock's time a new progressive breed of artists were attracted to the Hampton's, out on Long Island, because the land was so cheap. Pollock's house was located in a place called, "The Springs." Today land is so expensive that a young artist couldn't afford such an attraction as that. During the time Jackson Pollock lived he reaped very little financial reward. Nothing like the people who congregate around his name today. But then that's the great tragedy of the artists life. No one talks much about the usury associated with dead artists lives. In the case of Pollock, after his death, his name gained a financial life of its own that has nothing at all to do with art - it's called fame and celebrity. Now days most people associate Pollock with the millions of dollars his paintings bring at auction. But during his time those paintings hardly sold at all. His retail exhibit prices at a gallery show in 1942 ranged from a mere $25 to $750 dollars - and not much sold...

Last Modified 07/30/2001 04:10:09 PM EDT Paul Jackson Pollock was born in Cody, Wyoming on 28 January 1912. He was the fifth and youngest son of LeRoy McCoy Pollock and Stella McClure Pollock. The family left Cody when Pollock was less than a year old, and he was raised in Arizona and California. After a series of unsuccessful farming ventures, his father became a surveyor and worked on road crews at the Grand Canyon and elsewhere in the Southwest. Pollock, who sometimes joined his father on these jobs, later remarked that memories of the panoramic landscape influenced his artistic vision.
While attending Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles, Pollock was encouraged to pursue his early interest in art. Two of his brothers, Charles and Sanford (known as Sande), were also developing as artists. Charles, the eldest, went to New York to study with the Regionalist painter Thomas Hart Benton at the Art Students League, and he suggested that Jackson should join him. In 1930 Pollock went east and enrolled in Benton's class at the League. It was at about this time that he dropped his first name, Paul, and began using his middle name. Under Benton's guidance, Pollock analyzed Old Master paintings and learned the rudiments of drawing and composition. He also studied mural painting with Benton and posed for his teacher's 1930-31 murals at the New School for Social Research, where the Mexican muralist José Clemente Orozco was at work on frescoes. Pollock's first-hand experience of contemporary mural painting is thought to have sparked his ambition to paint large scale works of his own, although he would not realize that aim until 12 years later.

About Us by Sierra Arts Productions Pollock, Jackson (1912-56). American painter, the commanding figure of the Abstract Expressionist movement.
by Nicolas Pioch Who Was Jackson Pollock, 1947. H Pollock was born in Wyoming in 1912. His family moved around the southwest, before settling near Los Angeles. At age 18 he dropped out of high school and moved to New York, where he struggled for more than a decade to make it as an artist. It has been suggested that Pollock was influenced by Native American sand paintings, made by trickling thin lines of colored sand onto a horizontal surface. It was not until 1947 that Pollock began his ``action'' paintings, influenced by Surrealist ideas of ``psychic automatism'' (direct expression of the unconscious). Pollock would fix his canvas to the floor and drip paint from a can using a variety of objects to manipulate the paint.
The Moon-Woman Cuts the Circle (1943; 109.5 x 104 cm (43 x 41 in)) is an early Pollock, but it shows the passionate intensity with which he pursued his personal vision. This painting is based on a North American Indian myth. It connects the moon with the feminine and shows the creative, slashing power of the female psyche. It is not easy to say what we are actually looking at: a face rises before us, vibrant with power, though perhaps the image does not benefit from labored explanations. If we can respond to this art at a fairly primitive level, then we can also respond to a great abstract work such as Lavender Mist. If we cannot, at least we can appreciate the fusion of colors and the Expressionist feeling of urgency that is communicated. Moon-Woman may be a feathered harridan or a great abstract pattern; the point is that it works on both levels.
