Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio)
Birth:
1483. Urbino, Italy. Occupation: One of the greatest and most popular artists of all time. His artistic talent was nurtured from a very early age by his father, the artist Giovanni Sanzio. Later on he worked as an assistant in Perugino's studio, but his major influences were the great masters; Leonardo, Michelangelo Donatello and Titian. Raphael is most known for his lightness of composition in the classical spirit. There are two major periods in Raphael's short life, the Florentine and the Roman. In 1504, Raphael moved to Florence, the influence of which flows through his art. Here he learned by studying the works of the masters, and thus developed the methods of representing the play of light and shade on a figure (chiaroscuro), anatomy and dramatic action most frequently associated with the high Renaissance. While in Florence his style became more animated and informal. In the formative years of his career, he had a tendency to rework many of Leonardo's ideas, and found in them a serenity of expression and composition that would stay with him for the rest of his life. Also present in his work, in the postures and the anatomical development of his characters, is the influence of Michelangelo. Painted in Florence, for Lorenzo Nasi, The Madonna with the Goldfinch (c.1506)

Raphael, born Raffaello Sanzio, was crowned the "Prince of Painters" by Giorgio Vasari , a sixteenth-century biographer of artists. From his father, Raphael learned painting; in his native Urbino, he experienced intellectual court life. A year after his father's sudden death, Raphael entered the workshop of Urbino's leading painter at age twelve and quickly surpassed his master. By the age of twenty-one, Raphael had moved to Florence, where he embraced the works of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. In Florence, his many paintings of the Madonna and Child display his characteristic human warmth, serenity, and sublimely perfect figures. Raphael's art epitomized the High Renaissance qualities of harmony and ideal beauty. In four years Raphael's fame led to a summons to Rome from Pope Julius II. As painter to the papal court, his work met with high praise, and he established himself as the most favored artist in Rome. He was commissioned to paint portraits, devotional subjects, and the Pope's private rooms; he also designed tapestries. Raphael was soon placed in charge of all papal projects involving architecture, paintings, decoration, and the preservation of antiquities. His untimely death at the age of thirty-seven, Vasari said, "plunged into grief the entire papal court"; the Pope, who "wept bitterly when he died, had intended making him a Cardinal."

About the Renaissance Artists Before the Renaissance, artists were seen as lowly craftsmen who worked with their hands. These five Renaissance masters helped transform the status of artists from menial laborers to creative geniuses, equal in importance to philosophers, musicians and poets. Artists emerged as highly regarded and honored individuals. Fra Angelico
c. 1400 - 1455 Fra Angelico was born near Florence and named Guido di Piero. When he became a Dominican friar in his early twenties, he took the name Fra Giovanni, meaning Brother John. By then, he was already an accomplished artist. At his friary, he created a workshop for the production of paintings on every scale, from miniatures to ornate altarpieces. It is said Fra Angelico left his works just as he first painted them, never going back to retouch or repaint, because he believed his brushstrokes were guided by God. After he died, people called him Fra Angelico because both his life and his art were so angelic. Sandro Botticelli Botticelli's real name was Sandro Filipepi. Botticelli, which means "little barrels," was a nickname given to his rotund older brother that later spread to the whole family. Botticelli's father, a lowly tanner, worked hard to give his children a better chance in life. Young Sandro joined the workshop of Fra Filippo Lippi, a famous painter who had scandalized Florence by leaving his life as a monk to marry a former nun. Later, Botticelli was drawn to the teaching of Savonarola, a monk who accused Florentines of living immorally and exhorted them to burn their books, paintings and other luxuries in what he called a "bonfire of the vanities." Botticelli may have thought his own paintings were not pious enough. First his art became more religious, then he gave it up altogether, and lived out his last years in a monastery.

The Raphael and Titian portraits will be on loan to the Art Institute from the Pitti Gallery in Florence, where they are considered to be two of the greatest masterpieces in the collection. This exhibition offers a rare opportunity for American viewers: the Raphael painting has never before been exhibited outside of Europe, and the Titian has been shown only once in the United States. Moreover, this is the Titian's first public display since its recent restoration. The two Pitti paintings will be exhibited alongside a group of important Renaissance portraits from the Art Institute's own collection, among them works by Palma il Giovane, Ridolfo Ghirlandaio, Giovanni Battista Moroni, and Jacopo Pontormo.
