This exhibition is no longer on view at the San Diego Museum of Art. Idol of the Moderns: Pierre-Auguste Renoir and American Painting provides the first investigation of the American critical response to Renoir between 1904 and 1940 and of his relationship with American artists who drew inspiration from him and his work. Organized by the San Diego Museum of Art and curated by Anne Dawson, professor of art history at Eastern Connecticut State University, and Steven Kern, SDMA curator of European art, the exhibition presents approximately forty paintings, one-third of which are by Renoir. This exhibition acknowledges Renoir's immense popularity with critics, collectors, and the public, particularly in the years between the two world wars. Idol of the Moderns also explores Renoir's impact on work by leading American artists including George Bellows, John Sloan, Marsden Hartley, Isabel Bishop, Guy Pène DuBois, and Morgan Russell, whose admiration of Renoir comes through strongly in their own work.

Pierre August Renoir : Fine art reproductions of oil paintings by Pierre August Renoir.
Pierre August Renoir Pierre-Auguste Renoir was the son of a tailor, whose father moved to Paris in 1845. At age 13 Renoir was sent to work as an apprentice to a painter in a chinaware factory. It was there he learned to imitate some of the great painters of the 18th century.
When he was 21 he became a member of the studio of M.G.C. Gleyre, and became friendly with contemporary artists of the time, including Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley and Jean Bazille.
Renoir's early works were not well received, as the Impressionist Movement's revolutionary approach to art had not yet become generally accepted. Renoir adopted a very distinctive style using rich colors and delicate brush strokes. Renoir's paintings generally depict people as opposed to nature and landscape.
During the last 20 years of his life Renoir was crippled by arthritis and although he was unable to move his hands freely, he continued to paint, by strapping a brush to his arm.

His father decided to move to Paris in 1845, where the young Renoir was sent to work at the age of 13 as an apprentice to a painter in a china-ware factory, where he learned to imitate the great Rococo painters of the 18th century.
Attracted to the Louvre where he studied the paintings of the old masters, he earned some money by copying 18th century paintings. He attended evening classes, and at the age of 21 he became a member of the studio of M.G.C. Gleyre, where he made friends with many of his contemporaries, including Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley and Jean Bazille.
Renoir was influenced, during his first years, by the Barbizon School, as well as Gustave Courbet. However in common with his contemporaries, Renoir was disenchanted with the formal tuition of the studios, and the forest of Fontainbleau, was a working ground for him. His early paintings were not appreciated neither by the critics nor the public. However this was common for all the impressionist artists, and it was not before a decade after the start of their movement, that their revolutionary approach had become accepted.
Renoir’s artistic progress was interrupted during the Franco-Prussian War, but soon after the fighting stopped, he took up painting again, and for the next ten years he was very much associated with the Impressionists, where rich colour, delicate brush stokes, and light palette created a highly individual style.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (ruh NWAHR) was the son of a French tailor. He was one of seven children in the family. His first experience with painting came when he started to work for a porcelain maker who made fine dishes. Since their 13 year old boy wanted to be an artist, his parents thought this would be a good job for him. He painted flowers on cups and saucers.
When the music teacher at school tried to teach him music, he just spent his time making drawings on the music books.
He next began to paint fans for a living. The ladies used these fans to fan themselves when they became too warm. Then he painted window shades to look like stained glass windows. It seemed that he would never have a chance to become a real artist.
Finally he was able to go to an art school. He became friends with other artists, Monet, Sisley, and Bazille. Money was scarce and they helped one another to get food and supplies.
They developed a style of painting known as Impressionism. Someone started calling their paintings impressionistic because they titled some of their paintings as Impression, Impression of Sunrise etc. That person didn't really mean it as a compliment, but the name stayed with them.

Short biographies on approximately twelve artists are included. These describe the lives of the artists, the styles in which they painted, and names some of their famous works. In addition to the artists, the site describes a number of styles of art, including characteristics of the style, and famous artists whose work was done in that style. The members of this team then created their own art work in the different styles, and provided these as examples of how that style of art looks. As a fun way to test how much site visitors have learned, two interactive games, Hangman, and an All About Art Quiz, are available to site visitors. Finally, to further encourage site visitors to explore the world of art further, the page provides links to a number of other art sites on the internet, with descriptions of what visitors can find at those sites.

    Biography
    Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Artist France Born 25 Feb 1841
    Died 3 Dec 1919
French Impressionist painter, born at Limoges. In 1854 he began work as a painter in a porcelain factory in Paris, gaining experience with the light, fresh colours that were to distinguish his Impressionist work and also learning the importance of good craftsmanship. His predilection towards light-hearted themes was also influenced by the great Rococo masters, whose work he studied in the Louvre. In 1862 he entered the studio of Gleyre and there formed a lasting friendship with Monet, Sisley, and Bazille. He painted with them in the Barbizon district and became a leading member of the group of Impressionists who met at the Café Guerbois. His relationship with Monet was particularly close at this time, and their paintings of the beauty spot called La Grenouillère done in 1869 (an example by Renoir is in the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm) are regarded as the classic early statements of the Impressionist style.
Like Monet, Renoir endured much hardship early in his career, but he began to achieve success as a portraitist in the late 1870s and was freed from financial worries after the dealer Paul Durand-Ruel began buying his work regularly in 1881. By this time Renoir had 'travelled as far as Impressionism could take me', and a visit to Italy in 1881-82 inspired him to seek a greater sense of solidity in his work. The change in attitude is seen in 'The Umbrellas' (National Gallery, London), which was evidently begun before the visit to Italy and finished afterwards; the two little girls on the right are painted with the feathery brush-strokes characteristic of his Impressionist manner, but the figures on the left are done in a crisper and drier style, with duller colouring.
