The Garden of Earthly Delights , Hell, 1504 (right wing detail)
The Garden of Earthly Delights, 1504 For some strange reason (which I'll try to fathom), Hieronymous Bosch is not so highly regarded in his homeland. In fact a visit to the Rijksmuseum in search of one single Bosch painting is an exercise in futility. I recently visited the museum's excellent website , and alas, he is left off the list of hundreds of Dutch artists! This flemish painter whose magnificient yet eeire landscapes filled with bizarre creatures, horrific demons and blasphemies (Garden of Earthly Delights) influenced many artists including the surrealists, is almost a non-entity in Holland. My guess is his religious themed works didn't play too well during the golden age, when the Dutch were pursuing pleasure, not piousness. Bosch's hellish message of paying grotesquely for sins in one's lifetime was probably as much a turnoff to the existential Dutch (then and now) as the Spanish Inquisition was during it's heyday in Holland. Perhaps another reason is that much of his work has been spirited off to Spain and France, hanging in the Louvre and Prado museums. It seems the Catholic countries can better appreciate the evils of sin and the price to be paid in hell.

Biography
Jan Vermeer
Artist Holland Born 31 Oct 1632
Died 15 Dec 1675
Among the great Dutch artists of the 17th century, he is now second in renown only to Rembrandt, but he made little mark during his lifetime and then long languished in obscurity. Almost all of the contemporary references to him are in colourless official documents and his career is in many ways enigmatic.
Apart from a visit to The Hague in 1672 (to act as an expert witness concerning a group of Italian paintings of disputed authenticity), he is never known to have left his native Delft. He entered the painters' guild there in 1653 and was twice elected 'hooftman' ('headman'). but his teacher is not known. His name is often linked with that of Carel Fabritius, but it is doubtful if he can have formally taught Vermeer, and this distinction may belong to Leonaert Bramer, although there is no similarity between their work.
Only about 35-40 paintings by Vermeer are known; one or two were destroyed in the disastrous Delft explosion of 1654. It is unlikely that the figure was ever much larger; this is because most of the Vermeers mentioned in early sources can be identified with surviving pictures, whilst only a few pictures now attributed to him are not mentioned in these sources - thus there are a few loose ends. This small output may be at least partially explained by the fact that he almost certainly earned most of his living by means other than painting. His father kept an inn and was a picture- dealer and Vermeer very likely inherited both businesses. In spite of this he had grave financial troubles (he had a large family to support - his wife bore him 15 children, and she was declared insolvent in the year after his death).

A Woman Reading a Letter
Like most travelers, I took in Dresden's magnificently restored Kemper Palace in half a day. Raphael's Sistine Madonna The Tribute Money felt worlds apart from a German Renaissance calm, clumsy, and fastidious hausfrau who mothers Christ, not to mention 30 rooms away. scholarship and the museum collectors . Both define styles and yet imply common ground among all periods, in the simply beautiful . No wonder bare walls are giving way to explanatory labels. It is an old and suitably meaningless debate: Is art best defined as symbol making or as something that resists interpretation? Does its allegory have a subtext? Both sides beg for the vast institution called art history, and neither side is ready to ask how uniform and coherent that institution really is. I want to make the question more concrete in a context of real history. I want to follow my own adjustments as I faced the mutest artist of all. Maybe my favorite work from that visit is one of the city's two by Vermeer. It shows a woman reading a letter.

Highlight : Vermeer
This highlight proposes to approach the life of Vermeer and to analyze one of his works. Vermeer's biography On October 31, 1632, Jan, the son of Reynier and Digna Vermeer, was baptized in New Church in Delft. In 1641, Reynier Jansz bought the "Mechelen" house with an adjoining inn on the Grote Markt square inDelft.
His father, a weaver and inn keeper, was enrolled in the Guild of Saint Luke as Mr. Constvercoper (master merchant of artworks). Jan Vermeer would see his first paintings in his father's establishment. On April 23, 1653, the civil marriage of Jan Vermeer and Catharina Bolnes was celebrated in the Delft city hall; she was from Gouda and five years his senior. They would have 15 children, 4 of whom died at a young age. On December 29, 1653, Vermeer enrolled as a master painter in the Guild of Saint Luke in Delft. In 1662, Vermeer was elected the Guild's president. On December 16, 1675, Jan Vermeer, a painter by trade, forty-three years old, was entombed in Old Church in Delft. These are the only three documents which have survived: his birth, his marriage and his death certificates. Some stories about his family, inheritance, debts and that is all. This man's masters, models and companions are unknown to us.
