ARTISTIC HERITAGE
Just looking out over the Smokies' incredible blue vistas inspires a fundamental aesthetic response; the heart and mind want to capture this view and remember it forever. The Smokies' rich artistic heritage is born from the first isolated settlers' self-sufficiency. Mountain economy was not based on currency; instead wealth was determined by goods. Bushels of corn, wool sheared from sheep or furniture built from the forests' trees were the sources of wealth. When time allowed, the utilitarian objects took on a stately elegance, reflecting the beauty of the environment in a weaving pattern on a basket or the carved design of a broom handle. Music also played an important role in the life of early settlers. The dulcimer, a three-stringed instrument shaped like a stretched violin, was developed here by people of Scotch decent to imitate the sound of a bagpipe. The vibrato of a plucked string echoes its droning sound and the dulcimer was much easier to make. Other stringed instruments like guitar and banjo were also popular in the mountains, contributing to many a church service or restful evening spent sitting on the porch. These instruments are the staples of bluegrass, a rollicking folk music style that was centered around the southern Appalachians. Bluegrass heavily influenced the country music of today, which is featured in the area's multiple music theaters that have sprung up in recent years.

KNIFE RIVER INDIAN VILLAGES NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE
TEACHER'S GUIDE
UNIT 4...ARTS, CRAFTS and CLOTHING

Like all American Indian groups, those people living in the Villages near the confluence on the Knife and Missouri Rivers of North Dakota made tools, housewares, clothing, toys, and musical instruments from things that were available nearby or sometimes farther off if the material was important in the production of the item.
Knife River flint, a dark-brown glassy quartz material, was used extensively by Knife River Indian Villagers in the manufacture of chipped stone tools. The largest concentrations of the material are found in Dunn and Mercer Counties of western North Dakota.
A predictable chipping pattern made Knife River flint valuable as a raw material for stone tool manufacture. Gathered from pre-Ice Age deposits, flint was utilized in tool manufacture not only by the Villagers but by many Native American groups for the past 11,000 years. Arrowheads are what we think of when we think of stone tools, but Native Americans made tools from flint for scraping hides and shaping wood and bone; piercing tools like awls and drills; cutting tools like knives; and chopping tools like axes. People traveled great distances to gather the raw material. It is believed that preshaped tools, called blanks, were locally made and then traded to people living greater distances from the quarries. It was so important a trade item that projectile points made from it have been found in sites as far away as Missouri and Ohio.

THE STATE BUILDINGS AT THE COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION In "Shepp's World's Fair Photographed" (by James and Daniel Shepp, Chicago and Philadelphia: Globe Bible Publishing Co., 1893), the building is described as follows. "The Idaho Building is Colonial in style, though the territory was unknown when our bathers were early connected with Great Britain by colonial ties . . . . . . It is well that the children who come here should see these rooms. They teach the lesson of the growth of our national civilization, and how, step by step, men have made their way in life, as well as something of the costs of the luxuries that we now enjoy. when the foundations of a nation's civilization are bared before our eyes, we are apt to judge, with greater acumen, the value of the superstructure. The foundation, then is here before us, in the cabin and log hut." (pp 370 - 372) Of particular interest is the furniture in the Womans Reception Room that encorporates an eclectic blend of English, German and Japanese influences, but the heavy construction and the fringed leather upholstery with heavy tack heads gave an overall Western feeling that reflected the frontier theme of the building. This furniture was exhibited before the completion of the Swedenborgian Church in San Francisco (and seen most likely by A. Page Brown, architect of the California Building, and perhaps also by Gus Stickley), and it was widely published in guides to the Fair in 1893.

The Noble Craftsmen We Promote:
The Arts and Crafts Movement in the American Midwest
Introduction
Back to Table of Contents On to Roots The title for this exhibition, "The Noble Craftsman We Promote: The Arts and Crafts Movement in the American Midwest" comes from a Toledo University Manual Training Department course catalog of 1905. The Manual Training Department, which had been a fundamental part of the university's curriculum since 1884, sought to teach vocational skills to Toledo's young people so that they might secure a better future for themselves. Among the areas of instruction offered by the school was Wood Design and Construction, taught by instructor Mary H. Barkdull. In the course catalog, Ms. Barkdull states that while most understood what the Arts and Crafts Movement was in terms of design, they did not understand the philosophy of the movement. "It does not mean a heavy, straight-line chair, an odd piece of metal work, or a unique leather screen. It has a deeper significance. It would take the workman away from the mechanical guiding of a machine, and put him at work to express a developed individuality, in a bit of decoration which will be truly art and not a tawdry substitute. It aims to create a demand for good things on the part of the public. It will accomplish the union of Art and Craftsmanship. A clever cabinet-maker two generations hence will be a clever designer. This will of course be brought about by education." But despite Ms. Barkdull's contention that her classes had a higher purpose, the Arts and Crafts Movement as taught at Toledo University's Manual Training Department and other places in the Midwest was far removed from the philosophical roots of the movement as it began in Great Britain in the 1860s. Photographs showing the school's mechanized machine shop and wood-working laboratory make this clear. William Morris and John Ruskin, the deacons of the British movement, did not embrace the machine, rather they held it in disdain. This basic division over the role of the machine in the Arts and Crafts Movement is the essence of what separates the British purists from the utilitarian craftsmen of the American Midwest.

Safety in Children's Arts and Crafts Projects
This NebGuide discusses the steps to take to ensure safety with arts and crafts materials and environments. Shirley Niemeyer, Extension Specialist, Home Environment Previous Category Catalog Order Info
Arts and crafts activities let young children express themselves creatively. If you offer arts and crafts, it's important to have safe products and tools for the children in your care to use. Some arts and crafts products contain solvents or materials that may expose children to toxic ingredients, fumes, or dusts. The Center for Occupational Hazards recommends not letting children under 12 years of age use toxic art products. The center suggests checking the labels on art materials, and using only those identified as safe for children's use. It's not easy to determine which arts and crafts tools and materials are safe for children. Some materials contain toxic or harmful chemicals, yet their labels will have inadequate information about ingredients or precautions such as whether they are safe for children.
Arts and crafts product labels
Always read the packaging label on any arts and crafts product or tool. Follow carefully the directions and precautions listed on the label.
