ARIKOK NATIONAL PARK, ARUBA, GOVERNMENT ORGANIZATION List of Stories Arikok National Park encompasses about 18% of the island of Aruba, and was designated by the government in the early eighties as an environmental sanctuary. The Park boasts a variety of flora and fauna, including five species that only can be found on this island and no other, and other natural resources that remain valuable to the people of Aruba. The Park is also home to the highest points in Aruba, while the land encompasses the three primary geological shapes that make up the formation of the island. These unique shapings have contributed to the survival and support of the indigenous plant and wildlife on the island of Aruba, and has influenced the pattern of human settlement. Aruba has seen many phases of Native American habitation, and Arikok National Park is home to many significant sites of Native American settlement and art. Seeing the Park as an important role in the island's sustainable development, the government of Aruba has devised an action plan in order to keep the resources of the Park at full capacity. Their master plan includes the following objectives; to maintain a unique part of Aruba's cultural and natural landscape, to keep, stabilize and restore vital populations of native flora and fauna, to preserve specific native and rare species, to develop environmental education opportunities, and to develop recreational and tourism amenities in the Park.

History and Government
History:
On 1 January 1986 Aruba achieved internal autonomy, separating it administratively from the rest of the Netherlands Antilles, although it remains an integral part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. This was originally conceived as the first step towards independence, for which a ten-year transitional period was planned. In March 1994, however, after consultation with the Dutch government, this plan was shelved. Independence at some later date has not been completely ruled out, but it will now require the consent of two-thirds of the population in a referendum. The reluctance to move towards independence seems to have come from the Arubans themselves, especially the leading political party, the Arubaanse Volkspartij (AVP). The AVP, under the leadership of Jan Hendrik Eman, won both two successive elections in 1993 and 1997 but suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of its major rival the centre-left

The Island of Folklore and Traditions
Aruba lies at the heart of the southern Caribbean, about two-and-a-half hours by air from Miami, Florida and 15 miles north of Venezuela. The island is 19.6 miles long, and six miles across at its widest point, with a total area of 70 square miles. Aruba is outside the hurricane belt and the island boasts year-round great weather, cooling trade winds and friendly people .Located on Aruba's picturesque southern coast, Oranjestad is the historical Dutch capital city. All of Aruba's government buildings and main offices are located in the capital city. Oranjestad is also the place to shop or to browse in the marketplace for Aruban art and local handicrafts. Aruba has a mélange of people from the South American and European continents, also from the Far East and other islands of the Caribbean. These different settlers have added a unique flavor to the lives of the inhabitants of the island. When you drive about the island you will see housewives sweeping their dirt yards. A tradition maintained from early Indian custom. Aruba's first inhabitants were the Caquetios Indians from the Arawak tribe. In 1805, during the Napoleonic Wars, the English briefly took control over the island, but it was returned to Dutch control in 1816. Although Aruba continues to exist within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, it functions independently. In Aruba, the people speak, write and read English, Spanish, Dutch and Papiamento fluently. Many also speak French and German. Papiamento was developed to enable African slaves to communicate with their owners. Dutch is the official language of Aruba and all documents and government papers are in Dutch, lessons at school are also given in Dutch. English is recognized as an international language and all inhabitants of Aruba are obliged to learn English as early as the 4th grade in primary school.
