is of value to those with a general interest in and population, social and culturalgeography respectively. evidence from Australia and the asiapacific region
http://handbook.mq.edu.au/p3/pt3h_282.htm
Department of Human Geography
The Department of Human Geography offers units for the following pass and honours degrees:
  • Bachelor of Arts Bachelor of Arts in Geographic Information Systems Bachelor of Arts in Population Studies Bachelor of Environmental Management Bachelor of Health Bachelor of Science Bachelor of Social Science.
Note also that the BSc and BA and Environmental Management degrees can be combined with other qualifications such as the Diploma of Education (DipEd) and the Bachelor of Laws (LLB). Human geography is concerned with the spatial expression of human activities, and their relationships with, and the planning and management of, human and physical environments. It can be studied as part of the broad field of human and physical geography, as a coherent course of study in its own right, or as part of a major in resource and environmental management. In addition, human geography can be studied with other units leading to coherencies including Population Studies and Geographic Information Systems. Students majoring in human geography can also include units from a range of other disciplines, including anthropology, computing, cultural studies, demography, economics, history, law, politics, sociology and statistics. Employment opportunities for human geographers are found in resource management and environmental planning, social and urban planning, tourism, administration, research and teaching. Students of the social sciences are advised to study elementary statistics and computing, and they should also consider basic units in fields such as politics, history, demography, economics, anthropology and sociology. Those studying resource and environmental management may need to enrol in both science and social science units outside of geography, though the balance will depend on their interests.

  • NATURE: Wild Horses of Mongolia With Julia Roberts
The steppe nomads of Central Eurasia have influenced the history of the world, even when they behaved themselves by staying in their traditional grasslands. This PBS special deals with life in the Asiatic portion of the steppes. Julia Roberts helps us to learn about the nomadic horsemen and the wild horses that have been such an important part of their lives. "Peruse a timeline of Mongolian history, discover how Mongolian houses, called gers, are constructed so that they can be easily disassembled, and participate in the "Race Across the Steppe" horse racing game to test your knowledge of Mongolian culture." You might want to send students to Oyunbilig's Great Mongol Home Page for more information before or after viewing the program.
