Being There
When fireworks light up the midnight sky over Hong Kong on 1 July 1997, Dan Overmyer, will be there pondering the future of Hong Kong's 6 million inhabitants. Dan considers himself fortunate to be able to observe the return of Hong Kong to its rightful owner, the People's Republic of China, from a ringside seat. He leaves for Hong Kong this September for a year's stint as Professor in the Department of Religion at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He will teach graduate courses in readings in Buddhist and popular religious texts and in theory and method in the study of religion. He will also handle an undergraduate course in Chinese popular religion.
Projects in Progress
In the year and a half as the Prof. Louis Cha Chair in Chinese Research, Nina Halpern has pursued three projects in connection with her study of the interactions of politics and economics in Post Mao China. These projects focus on: Restructuring the Government Bureaucracy, Economic Opportunity and Socio-Political Change, and Basic Level Party Organization. The last project is funded by a UBC New Faculty Research Grant.
Like the West Garden
With its move to the new Choi Building, the CCR has been the lucky recipient of gifts to brighten its new offices ("...like the West Garden...") and to fund its cultural programs ("...like the East Hall..."). A couplet composed especially for the CCR by the C.Y. Chao, Professor Emeritus of Asian Studies, has been rendered into calligraphy by Yim Tse, China librarian at the Asian Library. The framed work adorns the Centre's meeting room along with two framed old Chinese silk embroidery donated by UBC alumni Eric and Day Gee. Two cash gifts from Tak Wah Chan and De-Cheng Ma of Vancouver have been received towards the workshop series "Retention and Adaptation of Chinese Culture in Canada." The series involving Chinese senior immigrants, youth groups and high school teachers, is jointly sponsored by the Chinese Cultural Centre of Vancouver.

McKinnon: Treading a careful line between factions
The Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Don McKinnon, was elected to the post in November 1999. The 63-year-old New Zealander had previously served as his country's foreign minister and deputy prime minister.
I think the Commonwealth has an amazing relevance. It penetrates every part of the globe, is significant in terms of ethnicity, culture, and geography
Don McKinnon Early in his tenure, Mr McKinnon stressed the desire to modernise the 54-nation organisation, and make it more ''credible". In early 2000, Mr McKinnon told the International Herald Tribune: "I think the Commonwealth has an amazing relevance. It penetrates every part of the globe, is significant in terms of ethnicity, culture, and geography. "I want to make it more relevant and credible, but also able to react to situations, so its flexibility is important, too. I feel the nature of the organisation gives us a major opportunity to take advantage of globalisation."

Singapore Geography and Climate Area Links to Maps Scout Page on Singapore with map. Singapore Map with some links. CityNet's Singapore Map Climate Depending on whom you ask, Singapore either has four seasons or no seasons. The four seasons are: hot, hotter, wet and wetter. And no seasons because Singapore has a warm tropical climate with sunshine all year roundmaking it a good place to develop a perpetual tan. With the sea to further moderate fluctuations in temperature, Singapore's weather is almost boringly consistentbetween 32°C (90°F) for a high and 24°C (75°F) for a low. The lowest temperature ever recorded in Singapore was 20.5°C (69°F). Humidity is high. It hits you like a wall the second you step out of the airport. The daily average relative humidity is 84.4 per cent. That means it gets past 90 per cent just before dawn and perhaps 60 to 70 per cent in dry afternoons. Folklore has it that a certain European car make was rusting fast, but the manufacturers could not believe that such a place as humid as Singapore existed. So they flew down some engineers who verified that indeed on planet Earth, a humid little place that tests their cars existed. Folklore goes that they returned to tighten their manufacturing standards against bodyrust. Allow anything from one week to a month to adjust to the humidity.
