The Asian American Writers' Workshop offers youth-arts programming throughout the school year. We also facilitate special summer programs that encourage young people to explore the intersection of creative writing with other art forms. During the summer of 2002, we created the Through Our Eyes Youth Arts Initiative. Through Our Eyes was a free summer program facilitated by Asian American writers and photographers, encouraging young people to explore issues of community and identity through the arts. Teenagers participated in intensive writing and photography workshops in our office, as well as field trips to various New York City communities. During the summer of 2002, the initial session of Through Our Eyes, thirteen high school students wrote poems and took photographs based upon their visions of community. Special workshops were led by photographer Corky Lee, poet Bushra Rehman, and performance poet Regie Cabico. The program culminated in a community-wide performance event featuring a slide-show and reading of original work from all participants. Please check this website in April for updates about future summer programming.
