Please help us update this directory!
This directory began as a FAQ assembled by regular posters to the USENET group soc.culture.asian.american. Descriptions of programs were last updated in 1994, before the World Wide Web took over as the dominant mode of mass communication over the Internet. Please help us bring this directory up to date this year by sending email to Andrew Chin . Note that there is no interest here in listing Asian Studies programs, which are far more common than Asian American Studies programs and concern different subject matter.

The Hawaiian language, on the verge of extinction as a spoken language, has been revived through a combination of teaching ancient Hawaiian culture and traditions and the extensive incorporation of modern technology. Through private Hawaiian language immersion preschools and Hawaiian Language Immersion programs in public elementary and secondary schools, many children in Hawaii are becoming fluent users of Hawaiian. These programs emphasize traditional songs, chants, and materials, but also rely heavily on modern technology to enhance the students' language development. Using a variety of computer programs and Hawaiian language computer networks, teachers and students are able to develop Hawaiian language materials, communicate with other Hawaiian writers and speakers through e-mail, and create archives of individual and group work. Through the blending of the old and the new, tremendous progress has been made toward the revival of this ancient language.

This digest provides information to help teachers gain a better understanding of Asian-American children, particularly those from East and Southeast Asian cultures, and identify culturally appropriate educational practices to use with those children.
ASIAN-AMERICAN CHILDREN: WHO ARE THEY?
The term Asian-American covers a variety of national, cultural, and religious heritages. Indeed, Asian-Americans represent more than 29 distinct subgroups who differ in language, religion, and customs. The four major groups of Asian-Americans are East Asian, such as Chinese, Japanese, and Korean; Pacific Islander; Southeast Asian, such as Thai and Vietnamese; and South Asian, such as Indian and Pakistani (Pang, 1990). Although there are similarities among the various subgroups, they have different origins, ecological adaptations, and histories.
