http://www.nmaetc.org/cultural/AsianAmerican.asp
The Asian American and Pacific Islander (API) community is the fastest growing ethnic group in the U.S. with a population of about 10 million (13% of the non-white U.S. population). It is also one of the most diverse, with 28 Asian and 19 Pacific Islander groups that speak over 100 languages and dialects. The API group includes immigrants and refugees (about 75% of the population), Asian Americans who have been in the U.S. for many generations and Native Hawaiians and American Samoans (indigenous peoples). The largest subgroups of APIs in the U.S. are Chinese, Filipino and Japanese, and the largest subgroups of Pacific Islanders are Hawaiian, Guamanian and Samoan. California, New York, and Hawaii contain 57% of the U.S. API population. Because the API communities are increasing in size so rapidly and are so diverse, their health status and behavioral risks are not well known. In many cases access to dependable health care is limited due to cultural and language differences. APIs have higher rates than the general U.S. population of tuberculosis and hepatitis. Tuberculosis is13 times more common and hepatitis is 25 to 75 times more common in certain API subgroups than in the general U.S. population. API women, in general, have the longest life expectancy (85.8 years) of any ethnic group in the U.S., but subgroups vary widely: Chinese women (86.1 years), Filipino (81.5 years), Native Hawaiian (77.2 years) and Samoan (74.9 years). APIs account for 5,922 cumulative reported cases of AIDS in the U.S. as of June 2001 and represent about 1% of AIDS cases in the U.S. The numbers differ by API subgroup. In California from 1980 to 1995, for example, Filipinos accounted for the highest number (34%), followed by U. S. born APIs (19%), Chinese (12%), Filipinos (11%), Asian Indians (9%), Japanese (6%) and Hawaiians (4%). AIDS cases in APIs also vary by region in the US, with 38% occurring in New York City and San Francisco. Worldwide, 20% of current HIV infections come from Asia.

These shirts depict Asians in a highly derogatory manner and trivialize the Buddhist religion. These products are highly offensive, insensitive, and downright unacceptable; they reopen wounds from past discrimination that Asians have long endured and they denigrate the community's consistent contribution to America. This letter represents the opinion of the board of the Asian American Advertising Federation, which is made up of Asian American advertising agency principals, media, advertisers and strategic partners. The organization's mission is to grow the Asian American advertising and marketing industry, raise public awareness of the importance of the Asian American community and further professionalism within the industry.

Lina Unali A Preliminary Bibliography of Asian American Studies in Europe The idea for this special issue of Hitting Critical Mass arose from a conversation with Professor Sau-ling Wong, when, on a visit to Berkeley, I tried to describe to her the situation of Asian American literary studies in Europe. The discussion and the subsequent questions that were left unanswered provoked this desire to dialogue with other European scholars who shared a same specific interest, and bring together ideas and ways of working with Asian American texts. Thus, I had a very clear idea in mind when I began working on the journal. This special issue of

UC Santa Cruz is strongly committed to the educational value of multicultural perspectives, as demonstrated by the diversity of our faculty; the breadth of our curriculum and library holdings; the extent of the involvement of our students in field study, community work, and study abroad; and the community-centered work of many thousands of our alumni globally. This campus integrates multicultural perspectives into the curriculum as a whole, rather than establishing them as the responsibility of a separate department or departments. Students interested in comparative ethnic studies or in the study of Chicano/Latino, African American, Asian American, Jewish, or Native American experience in particular have, therefore, a wide range of curricular options. More than 45 faculty from 18 departments have ethnic experience within the United States among their teaching and research specialties. These faculty offer at least 80 courses each year that focus on race and ethnicity as concepts, and that deal comparatively or specifically with Native American, Jewish, Asian American, African American, or Chicano/Latino experience. Many other courses in this catalog deal with these issues in more general contexts. In addition, many UCSC faculty are concerned with the histories, cultures, and societies of the other countries of the world, which are places and cultures of origin for the diverse ethnic communities of California and the United States.

The Oxford Companion to United States History The Possessive Investment In Whiteness: How White People Profit from Identity Politics
"A compelling survey of 200 years of Asian-American experience and of its scholarly treatment." Publishers Weekly "A mine of valuable information." History Offering a rich and insightful road map of Asian American history as it has evolved over more than 200 years, this book marks the first systematic attempt to take stock of this field of study. It examines, comments, and questions the changing assumptions and contexts underlying the experiences and contributions of an incredibly diverse population of Americans. Arriving and settling in this nation as early as the 1790s, with American-born generations stretching back more than a century, Asian Americans have become an integral part of the American experience; this cleverly organized book marks the trajectory of that journey, offering researchers invaluable information and interpretation.
