Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is celebrated in May every year to honor the history, culture, and accomplishments of Asians in America. May was chosen to commemorate the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States in 1843, but the celebration has come to encompass the heritage of all Asian Pacific Americans. The term "Asian Pacific American" attempts to capture the cultural, linguistic, and ethnic diversity within the group while recognizing common historical experiences in American history. AsiaSource provides a number of resources that explore the diversity and heritage of Asian Pacific Americans.

Statement of Concern for the Safety and Well-Being of Montagnards in Cambodia and Vietnam, June 6, 2001 The complete document. As members of the Southeast Asian American community, we know better than to accept the "model minority" image of Asian Americans. We see all around our communities the constant struggles that our families and friends face with difficulties in language, education, and employment. SEARAC wants to work with other organizations to ensure that issues that concern Southeast Asians are not buried underneath the gloss of the "model minority image." For example, we need to draw attention to the fact that 43% of Cambodians and 65% of Hmong in this country live in poverty; Vietnamese American women are five times more likely than European American women to suffer from cervical cancer; and over 60% of Hmong Americans live in "linguistically isolated" households.

    by Jane Hyun
    Monster Asian American Expert
As a job hunter in a challenging employment market, you should use multiple resources to obtain information about your target job. In addition to answering ads and using recruiters in your search, aim to conduct an intensive networking campaign that includes connecting with as many associations, trade and industry groups, alumni chapters and ethnic organizations as possible. It is not sufficient to network with just the people you already know. You must branch out and meet others in the industry who have valuable insights for you and your future career. But if you also identify yourself as Asian American, why not take advantage of some of the trade organizations out there specific to you? You shouldn't isolate yourself by networking only with other Asian American professionals; you should always be seeking fellowship and community outside of these Asian professional groups. In fact, you can start right here with our message boards . However, knowing your Asian counterparts and joining affinity groups in your industry are important for increasing your network and expanding your reach.

    http://www.lorenjavier.com/asian/
Welcome to my Asian Pacific American page. As I mentioned in my "All About Me" section, I was relentlessly teased by a classmate for being Asian American. Because of this experience, I resisted any kind of pride in my ethnicity and race...and I did so for years. It was actually my younger cousins who made me realize that I don't need to feel shame. Now, I am in the process of finding my connection to the community. This Web page is one of the ways in which I can demonstrate my pride. I hope you'll find some interesting information here. Knowing your history is always a stepping stone into knowing yourself. I have included this section of links to articles and exhibits dealing with Asian Pacific Islander history. I have also included a list of museums and historical societies in case you want to explore. Equal to history in instilling pride within yourself are finding your role models. Margaret Cho used to ask what role models did my generation grow up with Mrs. Livingston from Courtship of Eddie's Father ? But, did you know that Miyoshi Umeki, the actress who played her, is the only Japanese-American to win an Academy Award? Anyway, here is a list of many other notable Asian Pacific Americans. I hope you find your heroes...

Background Information Background on Vincent Chin Case Jun 5, 2002 By the United Asian American Organizations, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor On June 19, 1982 Vincent Chin was beaten to death with a baseball bat. At the time, the American auto industry was in a crushing recession and much of the hostility was directed at Japan. Chin was a 27-year-old Chinese American who was celebrating his bachelor’s party in Detroit. Mistaking Vincent for a Japanese American, two white autoworkers began to harass Vincent with racial epithets and a fight broke out. When the men were thrown out of the bar, Ronald Ebens and Michael Nitz retrieved a baseball bat from their car and Vincent Chin ran for cover.
