Recognizing that students are invariably the leaders of such initiatives, the East of California Network has compiled this packet of information to respond to student requests, especially from campuses with no faculty or other resources in Asian American Studies. There are many different ways to achieve the goal of Asian American Studies. The materials herein are inclusive of some of the attempts that this committee thinks are most thought provoking and useful. The Network provides this information with the belief that the dissemination of information can provide greater insight for all students, faculty, staff and administrators interested in Asian American Studies. In addition, the more knowledgeable students are of the field the more effective their efforts will be both in interaction with administrators and in establishing Asian American Studies. This packet is related to another project of the Network, the Resource Program. This program will provide additional resources (beyond this packet) to students seeking institutionalization of Asian American Studies. STUDY ABROAD IN SOUTHEAST ASIA... PHILIPPINES OVERVIEW Across the Pacific horizon is a world of people and cultures which are increasingly interconnected to Main Street U.S.A. This program will provide the opportunity for undergraduates from any major to experience those cultures and explore some of the forces which are creating these dynamic links to the U.S. The Study Abroad in Southeast Asia (SASA) program is the result of an agreement between the Cultural Center, University of Philippines Mindanao (UPM) and UMass Amherst. The University of the Philippines is one of the oldest and most prestigious of the universities in the Philippines. The Mindanao campus opened in l994 to serve the rapidly growing economy and culturally diverse areas of Mindanao in the south. Its faculty include many trained in the U.S., Australia and Canada and faculty from the other UP campuses frequently teach at the new Davao campus. LOCATION: UPM has two campuses; one in downtown Davao City and a second on a 500 ha site 30 minutes outside the city in Mintal. With a population of over 1 million Davao City is the largest city in Mindanao, a main port and center for agribusiness, and one of the countries first class international tourist destinations. The Mintal campus offers a new multi-purpose athletic facility, cultural center, research and teaching labs, and library, dormitories and on-line computer laboratory. California Asian American and Pacific Islander Arts Community Statewide Gathering Report During the first week of June 2002, nearly 100 Asian Pacific American artists and arts administrators participated in the Regional Gatherings of the California Asian American and Pacific Islander Arts Network (CAAPIAN) in San Francisco and Los Angeles. This historic gathering brought together artists, arts administrators and supporters from diverse Asian American and Pacific Islander communities to network and plan for the future of AA/PI arts in California. We received very positive feedback about the regional gatherings and strong support for CAAPIAN to continue its work in developing this network. In particular, participants expressed their hope for CAAPIAN to undertake some of the following: facilitate the sharing of resources and information among the network; develop a clearinghouse for API arts organizations through the establishment CAAPIAN Directory; explore means for technical assistance for artists and arts administrators; and facilitate on-going networking support.
